now i got a reason for getting a DS if they´re going to convert it to english because my japanese is just hopeless. on a sidenote am i the only one who thinks that cecil looks kinda goofy?

Tendronai 08-24-2007 07:45 AM

I'm not going to bother getting this, since Square released a remake of FFIV just two years ago. I don't need another, no matter how graphically upgraded it is.

Daimo Mac, The Blue Light of Hope 08-24-2007 08:23 AM

i hayes it. i hates it i does /gollum

Seriously though. SE get your head out of your ass and redo Chrono Trigger if you have a hard on for remakes.

Or better yet, why not do a remake of Illusion of Gaia. I'd buy that.

god posting in the morning is a bad habit for me.

Redneck Scientist 08-24-2007 10:45 AM

Cecil looks dumb. I like the original better.

Satan's Onion 08-24-2007 11:31 AM

Oh, there's a whole list of games SE could re-release and/or remake (for the GBA, for preference) that would make me a happy gamer indeed.

But no, clearly the world first needs a version of FFIV wherein Cecil and Rydia can be viewed in three-dimensional glory.

Nayno 08-24-2007 06:53 PM

Yeah, there's better games for them to remake, but I think what they're doing is leading up to the stronger games with a few test runs. They remade FFIII before this, which I think was a good idea because it gave them an opportunity to practice making the transition before trying to do a more involved game.

Besides, it doesn't mean that this remake isn't going to be made of awesome. I didn't get FFIV GBA, so I will definitely be getting this. Not to mention that this is going to be a much more substantial remake with added plot points from the original script that they couldn't fit in the SNES version. And a HUGE graphical boost. I hope it comes with a remixed soundtrack, too.

You mean like Dragon Quest IV-VI, which they have announced they are remaking for the DS and are releasing early next year alongside Dragon Quest XI?

Yeah, they are remaking other games, and some of the biggest games they have. And I for one, cannot wait. One of the most needed remakes from the NES that already HAS a great remake we never got from the PSX era (Dragon Quest IV), One of the best RPG stories ever which America never saw (Dragon Quest V) and another RPG America never saw (Dragon Quest VI) all being remade for DS.

All we need now is the eventual announcement that the'll be coming to the US. With the huge sales of Dragon Quest VIII and the fact that Dragon Quest XI and Monsters for DS is already coming here, I'm pretty sure these will be coming, and about time. America hs been needing Dragon Quest V for a LONG time. Why we never got the PS2 remake, I'll never know.

Tendronai 08-24-2007 09:30 PM

See, I don't have a problem with the Dragon Quests, since I
a) have never played them before
b) am very sure they weren't released on GBA recently

And b is my main problem with what's going on. Square seems like it's afraid to stick all its resources into new projects, and instead always seems to have some remake or another going on because they know it will make them money. To be honest, I'm sick of that. Just because I didn't like some of the more recent stuff doesn't mean I'm unwilling to try something new. I need that new option, though.

Kenryoku_Maxis 08-24-2007 09:52 PM

Well, the good thing about the Dragon Quest remakes is that, although they keep making Dragon Quest remakes, they seem to be making them at a rate that is about 1/10th the amount of the Square remakes. And they only make them once per system, if that.

Also, while they are remaking Dragon Quest IV-VI on the DS, they are ALSO making THREE new Dragon Quest games on top of that. As well as other games at Enix's side of Square-Enix. What I find is so funny is, although Square and Enix have merged, ever since the merge, they have still seemed to work VERY differently than each other and almost as if they are two different companies still.

I have continued to see Square's quality of effort, resources and amount of 'new games' gone down every year, but Enix side just keeps chuggin' along and continues to impress.

Nayno 08-24-2007 10:14 PM

Most of the GBA games can't even be classified as "remakes", really. They're more like ports with bonus features, or "special editions". But it's not like Square-Enix doesn't have many other fresh projects on the horizon. They've got whatever the new installments are from Final Fantasy (Tactics A2; Revenant Wings; FFXIII in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla), Dragon Quest, the Mana series, and Kingdom Hearts.

And really, can you blame Square-Enix for making games that people want to buy for their portable systems? If they're making a profit on it, then there's a demand for it.

POS Industries 08-24-2007 10:28 PM

While the prospect of totally remade FF4 isn't anything for which I'd necessarily run out and buy a DS, I do feel that this is a good omen for the re-releasing of other classic titles to which the youth of today need to be exposed.

Especially games that they just happened to port to the GBA a few months ago...

Teryu 08-24-2007 10:59 PM

I think the reason they are remaking it is because it had alot of glitches where it would freeze up after you do something in battle or open a chest.

Regulus Tera 08-24-2007 11:31 PM

I think the reason they are remaking is that they will never release it on the Virtual Console, so they are just looking for an excuse so they can sell it at full price.

Arlia Janet 08-24-2007 11:36 PM

Dragon Quest 6 is one of my most favorite games ever, and I've only played it on a fan translated ROM that excluded the dialoge for many NPCs. The writing, characters, direction, how it held my attention and gameplay were just that good to overcome these obstacles. (Plus, I once beat the game and saved the world with a team consisting of nothing but slimes. A metal, blue, healer and slime knight. How freaking cool is that?!) I'd buy two DSes just to play that game.

As for FFIV, I'm not excited about it at all. Cecil looks like he is wearing a black leotard. I'm sure the difficulty, which was FFIV's biggest attraction for me, will be toned down to the point of not being fun like they did on the FFIII remake... and the FFV remake... and the FF6 remakes. Someone raised a good point earlier in this thread. "Square" games are crap now. After attempting to play that garbage of a game known as Dawn of Mana, I think I'm done with "Square" games.

darkcola 08-25-2007 03:17 AM

as for remakes of "old" final fantasy games i am soooo hoping that they´ll remake VII for PS3

Well, first off, FFV was broken to start with. If you mastered the right jobs, the game is a breeze. Secondly, AFAIK, they did nothing to alter the difficulty for these "remakes". The only one I own myself is FFV Advance, and it's just the same except for the four new jobs (all acquired late game, and none of them are even worth it).

And in FFVI they actually fixed the vanish/doom trick, among other bugs. So I really don't see where this "toned down difficulty" is.

Ryu Kurai 08-25-2007 03:31 AM

They've been saying they'll remake 7 for whatever the newest system is. I heard it for GCN, PS2, PSP, and I'm fairly sure only the PSP one came out.

The news of a FF4 remake doesn't surprise me. I mean FF3 came out a few months back, so why not?

Also: Definitely not buying. Special features or no, it wasn't good enough to get really far in a second time. FF3 is insanely tough. FF4 just kills off every character that would make your party good.

Besides, Rosa is such a Mary-Sue.

Double Also: TONED-DOWN DIFFICULTY? Clearly you're not talking about FF3. You must mean FF1 (Where they got rid of the random encounters from hell). Because FF3 doesn't screw around. It'll eat your babies.

Because it makes White Mages incapable of healing fast enough. And makes everything die a lot.

And can kill freaking Dragoons in TWO HITS! TWO!

*Shiver*

Professor Smarmiarty 08-25-2007 06:33 AM

Final Fantasies 5 and 6 were piss-easy. Kind of hard to turn down the difficulties.
I found 4 really hard though. Don't know if it was just me.

Arlia Janet 08-25-2007 06:35 AM

Gardua in the original would kick my butt every time. In the DS remake, I was no where near the level of those in that youtube clip, but Garuda barely scratched me. In fact, I don't remember purposely going around to just level up at all in that game until the end and optional bosses.

Mike McC 08-25-2007 10:34 AM

The GBA rereleases of the games actually do have toned down difficulty. Having played the original Final Fantasy 4 hardtype, I can easily say that the GBA release had toned down monsters. Which is a real shame. I much prefer my games to be harder.

As for Final Fantasy III, I haven't played the DS remake, but my god the original game was hard. So, it'd be hard for a remake to make itself harder. So, if anything, it merely maintained the same difficulty.

No, rumors have been saying that FF7 will be released on a next gen system. Square-Enix keeps on debunking all of those rumors. The only next-gen thing about FF7 that was released was the 2005 E3 Playstation 3 Demo, which was a technical demo for the graphical capabilities of the PS3. There is no Final Fantasy 7 remake. Spin-offs? Yes. Remake? No.

ThunderousWrath 08-25-2007 11:47 AM

Tampering with FF4?

But FF4 is my favorite.

Which means all who play it are blasphemers!

Magus 08-26-2007 05:26 PM

Cecil is ugly. Graphics are superfluous because the gameplay has not been enhanced a wit (I wonder if you'll even be able to toggle between members whose ATB bars are full. I doubt it.)

"with added plot points from the original script that they couldn't fit in the SNES version"

Why do people always say stuff like this about Final Fantasy IV's remakes? Was it because the story was so simple and cliche that they assume there just HAS to have been more to it? I played the GBA version of FFIV which I assume has the full dialogue and all that jazz, and all I could see was that Edward is actually Gilbert and Edge's real name is Edward. And that is it. Golbez is still Cecil's brother, Kain was still really under mind control, and Golbez is still only a secondary villain to some uber-powerful master-lord, i.e., Zeromus, as per all the other Final Fantasy games.

It also had the gameplay options of Final Fantasy Chronicle's FF IV (Cecil's Dark Sword, increased difficulty?). Which were also in the GBA version. Which I assume will be in this new version.

In fact I wonder if you'll even be able to find Cid, Yang, Tellah, and cure Palom and Porom like you can in the GBA version. In a way it seemed like comic-book death, but then again killing them all off right after the other seemed like ridiculous. I prefer finding them all right as rain and switching them in/out of the party.

Well, the SNES version released in the states actually did have a watered down and edited story, compared to FF4 Hardtype released in Japan. It was sort of a cross between FF4 Hardtype and FF4 Easytype. So, the first remake of FF4 was actually justifiable, because there was a lot of stuff in it left out of the original US release. However, this will be the third rerelease of FF4, so it's getting highly redundant.

As for the characters that disappear from your party in the story, they all were alive and well at the Giant of Babel scene anyway, all except for Tellah. In every version he outright dies and doesn't come back. Only thing that FF4 Advance did was make it possible to swap out party members with them.

Arlia Janet 08-26-2007 09:59 PM

That's good to know. Rydia seemed to die every time a gentle breeze hit her. Give me Yang any day.

Nayno 08-27-2007 12:16 AM

Really, guys, the GBA port isn't even a remake. It's unfair to call FFIV DS the "second remake" because it's such a radical departure from the original. Not like FFIV GBA, which has the same graphics, the same dialogue, the same music, etc.

Bolding by me, and I knew this beforehand. The bolded part is really why I didn't care. They aren't fitting all of it back into the game, just part of it. If it works, then they have an excuse to try to 'remake' it again, with some other parts of the story. Even more, I remember from the source I originally heard this from (IGN, full story here) that

Quote:

The remake will see some areas fleshed out while others will be cut.
Bolding again by me. It's not like the game is going to be magically longer or have the full plotline : it'll be about the same legnth, with a slightly different storyline.

So the game will be different, but I really don't care. They cut those story elements because they weren't as good as the stuff that they had space for. I refuse to let nostalgia get in the way of that fact.

Skit 08-27-2007 08:43 AM

It's pretty, but goddammit I am not buying a third copy of Final Fantasy IV.

Coinspinner 08-28-2007 12:30 AM

At first I hated this remake, now I'm ambivalent. It actually looks kinda... good. Having emulated the hardtype version before there was any word on an American release this is the first version of FFIV that seems to be worth my money. If there's not too much load time and the animations are quick I'll buy it.

It might just be you. I found it far easier than FFV and I don't disagree about that one being easy.

The way to make it harder is to crank up the battle speed to the fastest. That'll amp up the challenge quite a bit. And yes, it makes a significant difference.
