I love Stranglehold so much I'm thinking of trying erotic asphyxiation.
Run, shoot, dive, shoot, cover, shoot, run, SHOOT!
The gameplay gets repetitive, but I don't really mind repetitive gameplay so long as it's based on a fun mechanic, like shooting people. Shooting people never gets old. Well, that's not entirely true. It does get old. But that doesn't mean that once I've finished Stranglehold I won't put it back in the 360 every now and then just so's I can go on a rampage. The only complaint I have with the game is the voice-acting. It's not bad. Most of it is very good. It's just somewhat surprising that Tequila (voiced by Chow Yun-Fat) is the only Chinese dude in Hong Kong who has a Chinese accent. It makes him stick out during cutscenes like a cockroach on white bread. I sort of wish that the parts of the game which take place in China would be spoken in Chinese with subtitles, or at least with Chinese accents. Or at least with Chinese voice-actors. |
Yeah... i played Stranglehold a few years ago... when it was called "Total overdose"... as far as i can see, just the graphics changed...
BUT... i only own a Wii, so i havent PLAYED Stranglehold per se... im just tapping with the vibe im getting from reviews, videos and Photos... |
I played the demo it was alright I guess.
Like a B action movie turned into a game. |
...I thought the immediate comparison would be to Max Payne. Total Overdose, you say? Never played it, although I've seen copies bouncing around at Gamestop. Wonder if we have any in. And if it's any good.
Also: I vastly prefer third-person perspective. It's not very often a quality 3rd Person Shooter gets released, so perhaps I'm just so pumped because the last time I got my guns out in 3P was Lost Planet. |
Didn't Lost Planet come out just a couple months ago, like at the start of the summer?
Edit: And despite all the Max Payne comparisons I've heard, Stranglehold didn't really feel anything like MP to me, though that may simply be the vastly different art direction and level designs. Stranglehold seems a lot more acrobatic and over the top. Like a budget action movie. |
The Special Edition PS3 version has an HD copy of Hard Boiled, which equals instant win. Im buying it even though I dont have a PS3 yet, just because I want the SE version.

Yeah, I guess Lost Planet's only a couple of months old. But count the number of FPS games which came out since then, compared to the number of 3PS games! Count'em! I'm sure it'll prove... something.
I guess it's just up to individual taste. Personally, I really disliked Gears of War and Crackdown. But I love a lot of other 3PS games which just weren't as popular -- Lost Planet, Dead to Rights, Stranglehold, and so forth. I guess the Battlefront games were really popular, and I dig those. Please note that I don't game online. I've tried to do it a few times, and those experiences have driven me away from online gaming -- probably forever. My distaste for online multiplayer likely skews my opinion of a lot of games, so, please, consider carefully before you start launching the rotten eggs. Also: quite possibly the main complaint I've heard regarding Stranglehold is that it's "not realistic." You can't slide down a dinosaur's vertebrate shooting guys like that, it's impossible! The cover system in this game is horrible -- you can only cover with certain terrain features! Didn't the developers play Gears or Vegas?!? I have only puzzlement for these naysayers. What did you expect? It's not Tom Clancy's Stranglehold, dude -- have you ever seen a John Woo movie? And about the cover system: don't get spoiled. I seem to remember a shooting game that everyone loved that absolutely lacked a cover system. That's right, your beloved HALO. Nobody complained about having to strafe back and forth to shoot around corners back then, despite the existence of games which actually did offer cover systems. Also: you can dive through the air in slow motion and pick off dudes with perfectly placed headshots. How badly do you need cover? |
Crackdown was awesome, it's like GTA on super hero crack.
Also, I thought Stranglehold was pretty popular. There were always a lot of anticipation threads for it, anyway. I've never gamed online except a few matches in FEAR and Vegas, and in Vegas it was only because I'm a bitch for customization and that persistent piece of shit doesn't even let me make a character if I don't have Live Gold, let alone get skill points to upgrade him. On an unrelated note Vegas was a bad Tom Clancy game but a good shooter. I've never heard anyone complain about Stranglehold being unrealistic and my brain can't process that grievance without classifying at as some kind of joke. Halo's only distinction is being the first FPS on a console that managed to have a good control scheme. Compared to everything that was on the PC at the time, it sucks donkey balls. I've got to ask, though, what FPS had a cover system back then? I don't remember any except for that... third person xbox game, Liberty or something? |
Lots of PC games had 'em, but they sucked and were completely forgettable.
|
Goddamn give me some names here I don't remember anything about cover systems beyond "Press E to lean Left".
