Another Toastburner B RP Interest Thread

It’s me again.

With the death of the “Evil’s Return” RP (crazy thing lasted almost five months, despite the fact I did a poor job with the pacing o_O), once more, I offer my services as a GM of dubious reputation and skill, and if anyone would be interested in the RP ideas that somehow or another have popped into my head.

For those of you interesting in seeing my GMing record before deciding if you want to brave a RP done by me, it would be wise to do a search for “How the NPF Saved Christmas”, “Locusts” and “Evil’s Return”.

The RPs are listed in the order of what I would prefer to run (based on both interest and preparation), but I will bow to the wishes of the people if one idea proves to be overwhelmingly popular:

From On High: As far humanity was concerned, the world was about to end. The few thousand survivors of the race found themselves making their last stand in their final stronghold, the city of Avalon.

When all hope seemed lost, a light broke through the gathering darkness. From that light, descended beings of incredible power. Single handedly, these newcomers from the heavens smashed the forces laying siege to the city, and began the counterattack against the Dark.

In this RP, you are the beings that descend to save the final bastion of humanity…in fact, other than you skill in battle, descending to save Avalon is the first real memory you have. Are you angels? Gods? Mortals granted amazing powers? You’re not sure yourself…all you know is that the forces that seem bent on the genocide of mankind is your enemy, and that you have the power to wipe them out. This would be a super-powered brawler style. I have a couple of ideas to try to keep things from turning into “I swing my sword and lots of them die” style of posts…the main one I’m considering right now is a player-vote, in which players would vote for the person they thought was the best/most stylish/whatever of that particular battle, and the winner would be able to add another power to their character. This RP was inspired by the game “Devil Kings”…continuing my odd practice of getting ideas from less than popular media.

Big Bad Wolf Limited

To call Big Bad Wolf Limited a mercenary organization would be technically true, but it doesn’t really define what the company is all about. Big Bad Wolf Ltd specializes in jobs that more traditional mercenary companies simple cannot handle or will not handle…either because they don’t believe the job is real or because they don’t have the specialized resources they’d need to handle it.

Jobs like taking care of a prototype military robot gone wild (and you don’t want to call the military in because then you’d lose your contract), stopping amazingly elaborate heists that make the ones in the movies look like child’s play, putting an end to psychic corporate espionage, clearing out that otherworld phenomenon that ate the team of paranormal investigators you hired…stuff like that.

Big Bad Wolf Limited has the equipment and the people (at least, as far as anyone can prove, their people) to handle these specialized (and not to mention very high paying jobs.

Truthfully, I came up with this idea while catching part of Die Hard with a Vengeance, as the baddies open the vault, I thought to myself “what would happen if when they opened the vault, there was a guy there waiting for them?” This RP will also take elements from Devil May Cry, 007 and Mission: Impossible (for gadgets and such), and the Die Hard films. This is generally intended to be a relatively light-hearted RP will over-the-top action.

The Paradox:Those who hunt monsters find themselves bound by two opposing rules:

1) On a monster is strong enough to fight a monster.
2) Only a man can kill a monster.

For hundreds of years, summoners have used monsters to fight other monsters to the point that the human could go in and finish it off. This has proven to be a dangerous, and less than efficient way to fight the darkness and a stalemate between summoners and monsters who hunt humans has been in place for centuries.

However, something happens. In a night of blood, a group of people find that they are more…and less…than human. Beings that can fulfill both of the rules.

Humans that are monsters…

This idea was inspired by Shin Megami Tensei video game series (more specifically, Digital Devil Saga), and Hellsing. It would be a modern setting with the PCs as the ones who are both human and monster. Generally, the Paradoxes (the human/monsters) will be humans who have suddenly have a monster awake inside them. The humans can control their transformation for the most part, and can do partial transformations, but the more monstrous they become, the less control they have and the more control the monster has. Of course, as time goes on, the PCs will be able to control themselves more.

Oathbound: An RP inspired by the less than popular game Drakengard (what can I say...I liked it). It's your basic fantasy setting (kingdom A vs. Kingdom B) with a few little twists: in the game (eventually...it wouldn't start out like this), the characters will be bound to a dragon, giving them superhuman abilities...but at a price. For the dragon, the cost is having their life bound to that of a much more frail being, for if one of the bound partners die, both die. For the human, the cost is much more...immediate. Voice, sight, beauty, being able to feel pleasure, even the ability to age...all have been lost for the sake of the oath. More often than not, the price is something important to the character. All players would be on the same side (I find PC vs. PC combat to be cumbersome at best).

Those are the ones I have pretty solid ideas and plots for, and would be able get up and running in relatively short order.

The following are pretty rough ideas…I’d do them if they prove to be overwhelming popular, but it would take me awhile to get the plot and other ideas fully developed:

The Return: TB tries to take on the sci-fi genre once more. In this case, mankind was forced from the Earth more than a century ago by an alien race known as the Tanar'ri. Mankind attempted to flee on six great colony ships, each carrying millions. Of those six, only one, the Return made it to the edge of the Solar System, and the relative safety of hyperspace. In the passing years, the Tanar'ri have grown lax in the defense of their new conquered systems, and as such, it is a total surprise when an incredibly large carrier appears at the head of a fleet of ships. Mankind has appeared to reclaim their homeworld...and they didn't come alone.

Various races, displaced by the Tanar'ri, have combined forces to take back their homeworlds. The refugee ship Return has been converted into the largest warship ever known, and as such, Earth is first on the list to be retaken. This would be free form…I’d let you guys be anything from fighter pilots, to battleships commanders, ground pounders…maybe even more than one character.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baneslayer With the death of the Fallen, and the sealing of the Gates of Hell, demons have been basically banished from the face of the Earth. However, despite this, the demon hunting organizations find that they have no peace. With demons all but gone, more terrestrial threats have appeared. Long suppressed by the more powerful demons, the traditional monsters of lore returned from their hiding places.

Seven years have passed since the sealing of the Gates of Hell. In the aftermath of the Mother of Hell fiasco, the trust between the various organizations have been broken, and the Council long since dissolved. Groups have been broken and new organizations born. It is in this that a new power rises in the dark, and threaten to cover the world in night, and give rise to a new dominant species.

As more or less the squeal to Evil’s Return, this would be a modern setting RP. Both old and new characters would be welcome.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

War of the Dead: Mankind stands victorious over an outbreak of zombies…an outbreak caused by a cult of necromancers. As the armies of the world lay siege to the necromancer’s stronghold, they necromancers attempt something far beyond their ability; they summon a Lich.

However, the Lich was far beyond the ability of the necromancers to control. Almost all of the necromancers were killed, and then reanimated and enslaved by the Lich, with the reanimated necromancers under his control, the Lich raised a undead army that dwarfed the size of the zombie outbreak, and with far stronger types of undead.

Throughout the following decades, mankind was forced back into a several city-fortresses scattered throughout the globe. For almost fifty years, the war between living and dead ground to a stalemate. However, mankind has spent the last decades recovering what was lost, and developing new weapons of war.

In this RP, the players will play a squad of human soldiers who take part in the great counter-attack against the undead. What the group is will be up to the players. It could be just about anything; from power armored troops fighting on the front lines, to guerilla-style fighters fighting to keep the undead from expanding their domain in the ruins of civilization, to fighter jocks going nose-to-nose against dracoliches and attacking the city-killer undead war machines known as Behemoths. It’s pretty much high technology vs. magic…with the PCs being the high tech. This was actually something I came up with because of an undead vs. tech debate on these boards a while back.

Color me interested in Big Bad Wolf.

TheBlindMime 09-09-2007 02:34 PM

I'd take From on High over Big Bad Wolf but both are acceptable.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk 09-09-2007 05:24 PM

Here's another for From On High.

lazy man 09-09-2007 05:45 PM

Well, I'll personally vote for From on High, but I'll go for anything that wins.

Ugainius 09-09-2007 05:49 PM

I'm not to sure if I'll join another RP but The Return sounds interesting.

Bosolai 09-10-2007 01:37 AM

I'd be up for Big Bad Wolf Limited, From on High, or the Return, in that order of preference.

Mintaro 09-10-2007 02:04 AM

From on high sounds good, though I worry about that vote on posts bit. However that seems like a see how it goes type of situation.

Big bad wolf would be fun, though I notice those 'mercenary group' rps tend to fall apart rather quickly. So if that one were run it might not be a bad idea to set up a rank system before we even start. As well as maybe build some character relationships so we all have things to bounce off of right from the beginning. Cause we don't need 6 people being the uncaring rebel. and 5 people being the tech guy/girl with 1 guy actually trying to accomplish the mission and one dude sitting in the back talking about his explosives.....why did I flash on my family reunion......

Krylo 09-10-2007 02:15 AM

I vote that you run them all simultaneously and independently.

Astral Harmony 09-10-2007 02:47 AM

I'd prefer Big Bad Wolf Limited the most, but The Paradox sounds pretty bitchin' too.
