DnD Books?

ok so I recently started a club for DnD in my school (in our spare time, don't worry about that). After all the set up and the first couple of meetings went by without a hitch, I discovered that not everyone there has a computer or laptop with them. This means the PDF files we've been using for our DnD books are no good.

I have $100 Canadian as a club seed money (given to us by the school, yay!) which we can use to buy club stuff, I was going to buy the books and spotted a nice deal a few days ago which has mysteriously vanished.

I'm wondering if anyone knows who has the best prices on DnD books and other materials? I need at the very least the Core Books, though having miniatures and/or map sets would be nice too.

EDIT: also, Amazon is being a bitch. They added the word "revised" to their book titles and used that as justification to charge $5 more for each book.

Don't buy any until 4th edition hits.

Demetrius is right, however seeing as 4th edition won't be let out until May (I think if I recall correctly) of next year you might be able to get a good discount on the 3.5 books. I also doubt you'll want to wait until the end of the school year to finally get your hands on the books. Just be sure to realize that a new edition is coming around the corner though.

I suppose you could always try printing out some of the handbooks you have. That should hold you until 4e comes out.

Yeah as tempting as it is to break down and get 3E or 3.5, 4e is just around the corner so don't get too excited.

If anything, to see if 4e will be worth getting or not.

I would suggest you go for HERO System 5th Edition (which is an insanely potent system that works for pretty much any genre of roleplaying), but it's very hard to learn because the system is VERY compex. Don't believe me? This is how thick the book is.

That's bigger than putting the three core books for 3.5 into one book. And it doesn't have many character writeups.

If you still want to tackle HERO System though, I highly reccomend you get the Hero Designer program as well as Conquerers, Killers, and Crooks, which is one of their 'Monster Manual'-equivalent books. Neither are a must but are VERY helpful in understanding the system.

Also if there's someone in your area who knows HERO System, that's a HUGE plus. Hero Games does have a message board that's full of helpful people.

As much as I heart L5R, HERO System is literally the only gaming system you need to run any genre of gaming. The only limit is your own creativity.

Yeah but this is assuming 4e is going to be any good.
I heard the only playable race will be dinosaurs and the only class bard. Actually that would be totally awesome.

I saw the notices for the next edition coming soon but this club has limited laptops so limited PDFs. Til now I've been piggie backing the club's laptops but there's only 2 of them (mine included) and I don't wanna share mine around because it's got all the DM only info on it and I don't want to spoil the story.

Printing out the PDFs is ok and all but that's over 400 pages of stuff to print and I really don't have either the paper, ink, money (it's 10 c per B&W page) or patience to sit through the whole thing.

I think maybe we can wait til 4e but, again, I don't know if it'll be worth converting to right away. I'll have to wait and see.

... You just said you had $100 canadian. Thats waaaay more than enough.

Nikose Tyris 09-13-2007 06:13 PM

Rhino Man- you should be able to find a box set of all three handbooks (The Players Handbook, the Monster manual, and the DM's guide) for about $65.

Get 3.5 edition, 4th edition isn't worth the upgrade.

With the money you have left, buy at LEAST 4 sets of dice, and then buy as many more player's handbooks as you can.
