Beijing, China (AHN) - A Chinese man died of sheer "exhaustion" after apparently playing an online game for three consecutive days.
The 30 year-old man from the south China province of Guangzhou suddenly collapsed in front of his computer and was rushed to hospital, reports in Beijing News said, adding that doctors were unable to recover him.
"According to preliminary findings, the length of time this man spent online might have triggered heart problems," the newspaper paper said without revealing the name of the man or the Internet cafe from where he was playing.
"Police have ruled out the possibility of suicide," the newspaper said. The paper also blamed "exhaustion" as the most likely cause of death.
It is not the first case of death linked to prolonged Internet use in China. Earlier this year Xu Yan, a local teacher from Jinzhou in Liaoning province, collapsed after spending almost 15 days playing online games.
The Chinese government is taking strict steps to control the Internet addiction in the country. One such step included a "game fatigue system" introduced in April that docks gamers under the age of 18 who remain online for longer than three hours per session.
Also, a ban has been issued on the opening of new Internet cafes in China including orders to limit the time Internet users can spend gaming online.
Beijing News didn't report what game he was playing at the time of his death.
Online gaming in China represents one of the largest and fasted growing Internet business sectors in the country. With 137 million Internet users currently active in the PRC, the country now has the second largest online user base in world, second only to the United States of America.
According to statistics provided by the China Internet Network Information Center, as of January 2007 31 million Chinese Internet users engage in some form of online game play.
The average online gamer in China is relatively young (18 to 30 years old), male, and has at least completed a secondary level of education. Demographically the online gaming user base in China is very similar to base of China Internet users, most of whom live in larger cities.

I'm sorry if this has has been brought up before. It's the first I've heard of anything like it. I mean, who plays a game so long that they literally die of exhaustion? Wouldn't your bodies's basic physical needs get the better of you at some point? Hunger? Dehydration? The need for sleep? How does one just ignore those things?
Whatever game he was playing, it must have been damn amazing.
