Well, actually, the writers/producerts discussed whether or not to duplicate powers. Anyway, what they decided...

It could have been a bluff, and the box was empty, and then he'd be really screwed. It's likely he didn't fully trust that revelation himself, and knew that his nuts were in a bind right then anyway, so to speak, and Peter also has no idea what the fuck is going on with him and his powers either.
