Rosinete Palmeira Serrao, a government health worker, gave birth to twin boys by Caesarean section on Thursday at the Santa Joana Hospital in the city of Recife, the hospital said in a statement on its Web site.

Hospital officials were not available for comment on Sunday, but press reports said the grandmother and twins were discharged on Saturday in excellent health. The Caesarean section was performed about two weeks ahead of time because Serrao was having trouble sleeping, the statement said.

Serrao decided to serve as a surrogate mother after four years of failed attempts at pregnancy by her 27-year-old daughter, Claudia Michelle de Brito.

Brazilian law stipulates that only close relatives can serve as surrogate mothers. De Brito is an only child and none of her cousins volunteered, so Serrao agreed to receive four embryos from her daughter.

Aw man, I was totally expecting major incest when I saw this thread title. Now I'm dissapointed. This doesn't seem to be a big deal to me, I mean, it probably isn't too healthy with a 51-year old, but there's no incest or anything, so it seems ethical to me.

Anyway, yeah, it was actually kind of a nice thing for a woman to do for her kid, and though its weird, its not really ethically problematic. Its no different than Phoebe doing it for her brother on Friends.

But the insinuations might make this more suited for General so we could actually make fun of it and speak jokes that contain the dirt!

Technically it wouldn't be insest - her son-in-law would have had to have intercourse with her... so... yeah. It'd be incest-in-law. That sounds like a disgusting sitcom. I'll look for it on FOX later.

People are strange. This is really weird. Why would you want your mom bearing your children? It's disgusting and perverted.

Because no one else will, and she probably offered? It's not like it's their first choice, but how the hell is it perverted?

Its not really her kid, noy by blood anyways. Really, this isnt too weird, Im sure it happens a lot. If the son was HER son though, it would be a different, and bad story.

How so? Its not like she had sex with him. Basically, eggs and sperm were fertlized in vitro, and then implanted in her womb. It was all surgical, nothing sexual at all.

Whether the guy was her son or her son-in-law, the method and outcome is still the same.

No. Its a perfectly legal, normal, medical procedure. There isn't anything strange at all... the girl couldn't get pregnant, so the mother offered to act as a surrogate.

It happens a lot, and usually the surrogate is a relative, so I don't really know why this was even newsworthy really (except for the fact that the title sounds like something incest/sexual... but its not).
