Gotta have blue hair

So, I've made the decision to try blue hair; I've dye my hair in the past, but only with natural colors, so this will be something new.

I wanted to go with permanent; I figured I'll have to bleach my hair first anyway, so however bad the color will look (when my roots appear) won't be mitigated by fading. Having scouted around, there is no such thing as permanent unnatural hair dye in this city. So the way I see it, my options, when I get to that point, are these:

1) I could maintain the blue color, which is not my plan. It's really more of a foray, not something to which I intent to dedicate myself.
2) I could cover it all with a permanent color.
3) I could shave it all off and start over.
4) I could just leave it alone.

So, out of curiosity, those of you who have experience dying your hair different colors, what do you or what have you done once roots come in and/or color is fading? Any piece of advice?

My mother did blue hair for a bit, then shaved it off. I'm not in favor if blue hair, it makes the person look to me, immature and makes employment harder. That being said, if you feel the need to express yourself in that manner, go for, just don't say I didn't warn you.

I once met a girl with light blue hair. It looked nice, and not terribly out of place, somehow.

She was also a rabid pot head, and other such things that ruined it, though.

I once considered going blue in high school, but it never happened. However, depending on your hair color, letting it grow out naturally can be a viable option. I'd say if you're blond or a yellow- or orange-based brunette, or have black hair (I don't know what race you are), let it grow out. If you're a red-based brunette or redhead, I'd say you should consider transitioning it with purple or magenta/red at the dye point when it starts growing out. Something like:

Step 1: =====
Step 2: ======
Step 3: ====== (The fix.)

I died my hair green for like, two weeks when I was in 4th grade. Other than that, nothing.

A light, almost sky blue hair color is probably best for women. Men tend to have darker shades of color. Cause we're MANLY.

Hah, manly. I dye mine a fairly natural red. It's not really natural, but on me it looks normal. When I bleached my hair (only lightly), the roots ( a couple inches out by that point) looked bad until I got a haircut. I got it layered, since my hair's kinda long. The layers made the lighter parts look like some sort of highlight effect instead of just crappy roots. I'm planning on bleaching mine and going ridiculously ginger to see what happens.

The only problem with using a light blue like cyan, is that if your hair goes really yellowy when bleached, the blue may look a little greenish after a while of fading. The best blue hair I saw was a base light blue, with streaks of varying deeper blues. The contrast gave it some nice depth.

You've just checked stores for permanent colours, right? You could try going to your hairdresser and asking if they do unnatural colours. They tend to only do permanent stuff as far as I know.

I don't put anything other than shampoo in my hair. Am I deprived?

Nah, never coloured my hair either.

In any case, if you want to colour your hair in an unnatural colour, you should consult a barber/hairdresser/what have you, and see what best goes with your facial features.
For example, you don't want a really dark colour on a pale face, unless you want to go anime-ish, if you know what I mean.

Having said that, if you're not sure if light-blue is for you, I think I've seen really dark-blue colours that would almost seem black.
You could try that.

You might want to try water, too.

I'd check how the colour comes out on a single strand first, unnatural dyes can be fairly unpredictable. That's also a good opportunity to see how your natural hair colour looks side to side with the blue, just to help you decide what to do when the roots start showing.

I'd say as long as it still looks good colourwise, let it grow out. The thing is, when a natural hair dye grows out it looks silly/embarrassing mainly because it looked natural before, but you're not fooling anyone with blue. Besides, dyeing too frequently messes up your hair anyways.
