PC USB XBox controller
A few nights ago I had a friend over to my house to work on a little project of mine. I read up on splicing an XBox controller with a USB cable to connect it to my PC. I remembered hearing about it on TechTV about a year ago, but they didn't have the article on their site anymore.
We completed the connection, hooked it in to the PC, installed the drivers, and tested it out. It worked! Almost. All the buttons work right now...except you continue walking in whatever direction you previously pushed the left analog stick in. There is no way to stand still. It's that damn sensitive. I've already tried several different drivers and I've recalibrated it a thousand times. So I have two questions: 1.) How can I make the walking stop? 2.) I am also unable to look around the screen, I can only strafe and walk in any direction using both analog sticks. I still need the mouse to look. How can I change it to, maybe, Halo settings? You know, look with both analog sticks instead of the mouse. |
First of all, a little more information is going to be needed.
What OS are you using? What version of DirectX are you using? What brand of adapter do you have? Did you install the drivers from the cd, or from the manufacturer's webpage? I've seen this kind of thing before on some joysticks. |
...why would you want an xbox controller for your pc? go drop $14 dollars for a superior ps2 modeled controller.

You spliced it yourself?
When such things as this and this are out there for the taking? They also make them for the PS2 and most other console controllers (etc..). I've seen one for the Sony Dualshock controllers work perfectly. |
I wanted to do it myself because I felt like doing something constructive and not having to wait 6-8 weeks for it.
Answers to Misocainea's questions: -Windows XP -Whatever the latest one is -No adapter, just a RadioShack USB cable, the XBox controller, and a generous amount of electrical tape. -I downloaded the drivers from www.rc55.com and installed them along with the controller when I plugged it into the USB port. And, Johnny Socko, It cost me precisely $3 to do it this way :D Plus, I already lost the breakaway cable to the controller, so I really had no use for it anymore. |
I would give the drivers here a try: http://www.freewebs.com/redcl0ud/xbcd.html
They are experimental drivers that may have the bug fixed, if you used those drivers see what happends whej you try these drivers: http://www.rc55.com/rc55/resources/x.../xid-0.010.zip (I got both links from www.rc55.com) One last thing would be to ask at the rc55 forums, they will probably know more about this then anyone else. All in all, damn cool mod. |
Blah. I plugged in a PS2 controller and now I use it for SNES emulator. I use the R2 and L2 for fast forward and slow down respectively. it was 14$...and why the hell did you splice it yourself?! Seriously, just wait the month or so and get a lisenced item that you can turn around and say "You fuckers didn't make it right" if it breaks.

Well, I applaud the attempt at jury-rigging Bob. Too bad it didnt work out. I'm always one to try and fix things like that. Hell, I had to take apart to Gamecube controllers in order to make one work.
(NOTE: LOTS of Super Smash Brothers can wreck those controllers) And now the one i fixed works pretty well. So good try Bob, and hope everything can be fixed. |
Well, nothing's really broken. It's just that the drivers weren't designed to support the right trigger and the analog sticks are too sensitive when used on a computer. Right now I've just settled to using it to fly planes in Battlefield 1942. But, I pwn everyone like that now :)
Oh, and I got the pad to work too. And Misocainea, those are the drivers I'm already using. I've found they are the best out of all the ones I've tried so far, though. |

While you did manage to harvest the c-stick from one controller and place it into the other, the controller hardly still works. That would be why we all complained and your roommate bought another Wavebird. |
