A question to ALL gamers. (A weird random one)
This is gonna sound weird, an almost off topic, but it's a question to gamers. Reason I ask this is I was playing True Crime: STreets of LA, and I just kinda remembered violence, and whos against it in video games. Mostly right winged conservatives are mostly against it. So here's the question:
Are most video gamers liberals? I'm not talking bleeding heart "Conservatives and republicans are wrong no matter what and we're always right" kind. But are most gamers not apposed to gay marriages, they against the death penalty, against the domination of Iraq, ect. ect. Just curious |
Too big a group to really ask I think... I personally don't care about gay marriage and dislike both the death penalty and the Iraq fiasco, but many video game heads will disagree.
|
Being lax with likes and dislikes in video games is quite different than one's positions on homosexuality, war, economics, and so forth. At least, I think it is. Like Dynamite here said, that's a rather large group. It's not always easy to make statements about them as a whole.
Indeed, you may find that you are right. I wouldn't begin to guess. I'm sure, on several more specific areas, you'll find majority agreement. I guess that's more what you are asking, too. |
I dunno what I am...I figure let's the homosexuals get married, but also let's take over Iraq, and fry a few convicts while we're at it..
I know that taking a person's life is wrong, that we shouldn't decide their right to live...But we can't let them back out on the street and there's no room to lock them all up. |
I agree you are asking too wide an audience. try to refine it a little. There are some games geared only toward conservatists, these games are dumb i think.
As far as i am concerned; i don't care about Iraq, if it got destroyed tomorrow i wouldn't laugh or cry, i would just get on with life; as far as death penalties i think there should be death penalties for much more minor crimes. Steal a car? That's a killin offense. |
Dunno if you can conclude one by the other. Among a certain group of gamers, foe example, the more violent the game is, the "tougher" or "more macho" you are when you play it, and frankly, I've a hard time imagining a "tough guy" being against death penalty and such. I used to lurk a GTA forum, and, let's just say, the overall atmosphere didn't strike me as liberal, although most people were against censorship (for reasons obvious).
On the other hand, there are people like me (El Liberalo) playing GTA, having liberal friends who are into violent FPS's... can't really decide on that question. |
I think of myself as a liberal in the political sense. I think government should be somewhere in the middle of right and left wing. I think government should provide public services such as education and public transit, but should also support buisness and keep the taxes at a reasonable level.
As for gay marriage, the death penalty, and domination of iraq: - Against it (why do they have to call it "marriage"?), - Sort of for it (Only for the worst of the worst. The faster child molesters go to hell, the better.) - Against it (I wonder what would have happened if Iraq had no oil?) |
That's a very interesting question.
I consider myself to be more liberal as far as policies, but I hate the 2 party system. I think most gamers will be a mix of the two... thinking conservatively about some things, and thinking liberally about the other. |
Im right smack dab in the middle. I agree with both sides, but also disagree with both sides. Bush is a moron, but then again he has some valid points. However, Im of the idea that censorship is just plain stupid, and not the job of the government but actually the job of the parents. If you dont want your children watching/doing/playing something, then it is your responsibility. Dont punish me, a legitimate consumer, by imposing rules that take away from my first (and fourteenth) amendment rights.

A wide audience, indeed. I think the better question is: are all people who dislike violence conservatives? The whole violence in VG isn't new; conservatives, esp. the rightwing Christian(term used losely) types have been after everyone for everything. In the 1800s it was alcohol, 20s it was jazz, 50s TV, the 80s had Tipper on rocknroll, and in the 90s VG. (side note: none of this has ever been resolved. TV still has violence and sex, despite their best efforts.) Most of the anti violence VG types are also against everything I listed above, and then some.
And violence isn't the only thing VG are accused of; rascism, sexism, and probably the common cold. Just check out any college's TV station for a while, and you'll see something on VG beneath all the hippie bashing from cops. |
