Video game rumours, both ways

Okay, I figured it out.

In every single game where the developers want to give the player information through an NPC, they have them say "There's a rumour that there's healing weeds on the North Mountain/the king is an impostor/whatevs." The reason is obvious, it would feel like railroading the player if NPCs just flat out stated what's up. Point is, those rumours are always, always true.

Last I heard people are still looking for the Triforce in Ocarina of Time. Not to mention actual game development news.

When you grow up playing these kind of games, is it really all that surprising if you take every rumour you hear about in real life, especially related to video games, for granted automatically?

I just wish this were true, because then Mother 3 would be already on its way to somewhere else besides Japan.

Also, I heard a rumour that this thread should be in the video games forum. Probably bollocks.

God yes.

It'd mean that Mass Effect would be a Star Wars MMO instead. Oh man that would be wonderful.

Sure we'd be out one Mass Effect, but I think I'd get by.

I wasn't sure about that myself, really, but I figured it's less video games than psychology as demonstrated by video games.

I'd like to see a release of Mother 3 myself, but that strikes me as more wishful thinking than rumour.

I've heard people say that this has been scientifically proven to be true.

On a related note, did anyone else who grew up playing a lot of video games ever fuck something up horribly and go like "okay so I get my second life now, right?"

Oh, yeah...more often than I'd care to admit, I've wished that life had a reset button. The only good thing I've ever gotten from my screwups is the lesson learned, sometimes painfully.

I've also learned to take game rumors with a grain of salt, since many game programmers are sadistic bastards who like to tease the fanbase. :p

Maybe if the rumors about Lucas being in SSBB are true, Mother 3 will finally make it to the US. If I remember correctly, Fire Emblem was released in the US after Roy and Marth appeared in SSBM.

Anyway, we'll see.

I've wished a couple times recently that life had an Undo feature. Especially when deleting files by accident. Luckily, I found backups.

I find some things in video games are meant to mess with you. Like in FF1, with the well in Corneria. "It's just a well. Nothing special at all." IF IT'S NOT SPECIAL, WHY SAY ANYTHING!? Drives me nuts.

But the rumors thing is okay if well-executed. Some games blow it with stuff like "I hear that there's a rare [Dragon Grass] patch for [that sick dragon I don't know you have] at the top of [Mount Parnassus] if you can defeat [your evil twin's ex-girlfriend] and make your way through a maze of [Death Weed]. But I don't know what that means. I'm just a kid."

Other games handle it better with stuff more like, "[Mount Parnassus] is known for having many rare herbs. I should look for a cure for my baby's cough there."

Edit: Okay, totally missed the point, there. :sweatdrop

I think there should be a disconnect between fantasy and reality in terms of game news. Projects get delayed, canceled, put on hold, etc. There's no way anyone can account for all that can go wrong. And some things just don't get ported from elsewhere. Half of the most popular series in America include only half of what exists in Japan, and PAL areas often get royally screwed when it comes to ports. There are several games that are exclusive to NTSC that I've managed to stumble across. I don't remember which, but they were pretty big titles.

Dude, they stopped being rumors like three weeks ago.

I would enjoy some games with false rumors, so the player spends time looking for whatever you've sent them on, and then when they never find it, they go "But that townsperson told me it was there!" Until they figure out it was a false rumor.

I know there are a few times in Zelda games where the person who tells you the rumor really doesn't understand what the object is that they are talking about. A blazingly obvious example is the "Triumph Forks," but there's also hints at the power of an item that are off base.
