Redesigned model boasts built-in power supply; 25 per cent price drop likely
Thought PlayStation 2 hardware sales were going to quietly disappear after the revenue frenzy of Christmas? Think again – Sony is preparing to introduce a new, cut-price model of the console in early 2008.

MCV can exclusively reveal that this ‘compact’ PS2 will hit the US at just $99 in the New Year – a reduction of $30 from its current selling price of $129.

If a similar percentage cut is introduced in the UK, retailers can expect to sell the revamped system for just £75 – or maybe lower.

The new version has a built-in power supply for the first time in the console’s history – allowing the platform holder to manufacture it more economically and sell it at the bargain price.

Maybe this is to make up for the new PS3s not having backward compatibilty.

I don't know, I'm pretty sure everyone has a PS2 by now. I mean like even people who hate them have them.

Even people who hate videogames have them.

I'd have to agree, especially since this is what, the 3rd version? I imagine only those "I gotta have the latest technology" types would care, and those people would just get a PS3 instead

Or people that got first generation PS2s might be needing newer, shinier ones because their old ones are breaking down.

I mean the things aren't 360s, but two of my friends have needed to get new ones.

I've been meaning to get one for the longest time now and this is would be perfect if I hadn't planned the purchase for December now. Maybe I'll reconsider.

Seems like a smart move on Sony's part to me. Considering the the fact that the PS3 is way to overpriced for a system without a decent library yet. Shifting their priority back onto a system most people already love, and that already has an established library of cheap games seems like a good move.

You have about 7 years worth of awesome games to catch up on... good luck :D.

Also, seriously how many times is Sony going to remake this system??

Yeah, my laser is fuckin' up (I think that's what clicking occasionally means) and the poor thing is just so old...

Vault Of Thrones 11-02-2007 04:36 PM

Why don't they just publicly lower the price of the old model. That has to be cheaper than remaking the system, again. Really, how much smaller can it get, I have read books bigger than that thing. Unless it becomes CD player size, and works on batteries with special screen goggles then I am not too interested. Dropping the old models price would probably be a better bet especially seeing as they will have to drop the old ones price to under the new ones'.

Older models aren't available retail-wise.
They've been recalled, and parts were probably fitted into the slim-line model.

So, there's ALMOST no way to get an unused original PS2.

And they'll do the same with the currect slim-line model.
Recall it from stores and replace it with the new model.
