Weeell, I was thinking...
... That I was sort of bored, but had an idea. A bunch of RPs are starting up all at once, so this won't be an immediate RP, but something I thought up for the future. I just got a bunch of RPG Manuals recently, and one I came across was the Call of Cthulhu 5th Edition Manuel. I became interested in the game, and wondered about the feasability of making it into an RP.
The setting is either 1890, 1920, or the present. The plot is, roughly, as follows. For far longer then humans have existed, there were the ancient gods. They were the almighty rulers of the universe, but over time simply influenced the world less and less. As humanity began to rise however, the ancient gods began to stir again, against humanity. They are divided into the Elder Gods, who for the most part are actually friendly to humanity, the Great Old Ones, who are mostly residents of Earth, but are NOT friendly, are more powerful then the Elder Gods, and most wish nothing more then the annhialation of humanity, and the Outer Gods, the only things more powerful then the Great Old Ones, the Outer Gods mostly exist in other parts of the universe or in other dimensions, but come to our world to cause trouble every once in a while. These beings have been known of and existed forever, but through skill have for the most part stayed hidden to humanity. But there are always mistakes, either Cults that form to worship these ancient gods, or books written to learn how to cast spells given to man by these gods, or even monsterous spawn that are servents of these gods that walk the earth as we speak. We would play a band of normal, everyday humans. We don't know magic, aren't superpowerful, but what links us is some sort of link of knowledge to the Cthulhu Mythos. We would be a normal band of humans, things like professors or police officers or teachers or military officers, trying to counter these beings and their cults whenever we could. We would try to learn more about the enemy, but the problem is, the more you learn, the more insane you become. As you learn spells or read ancient books, and learn more and more about these ancient evils, it corrupts you and drives you slowly and permenantly insane. That is why it is important to fight them and defend humanity from their influences, but you must also be careful, for the meer sight of some of the more horrifying beasts can drive you temporarily crazy with fear, but you must gird yourself, for if someone won't stop evil cultists trying to raise the undead, or stop the revival of ancient sleeping gods, or stop the casting of hideous doomsday spells, then there may be no one left to stand against them... This is NOT a sign-up, this is an combination Q&A session, and idea formulating. I don't know if I will do this idea, but if it could potentially get off the ground, and people could role-play it correctly, this could be an awsome RP. And ideas, questions, or comments are welcome. |
That sounds really interesting. The only thing it would need is a system for the sanity, like points or something.(Gee, like that wouldn't have been a blatantly obvious suggestion)
|
Would we be allowed to use RM's little twink (I'll prolly need to look at it again, but I believe it was an illiterate deaf strong guy? Sumthin like that?)
|
where's the fun in that.

Well, anyone involved in my previous RPs will tell you that I like to make big sign-ups with stats and the whole nine yards... I was thinking a butchered version of the actual Sign-Up sheet from the RPG, to make it easeir to manage. Check out my old Shadowrun RP to know how my RPs work Sign-Up wise usually.
Basically the sanity system works that as you encounter Cthulhu Mythos (See monsters, cast spells, be effected by spells, etc.) You take away Sanity points. You gain them back by spending time in sanitariums or in private care. That takes a long time to regenerate Sanity however, so I might make it so that between missions or something everyone would just gain their sanity back and call it a group visit to a private care professional to help them. If your sanity drops to low, you begin to act funny, and if it zeros out or goes negative, you just snapped and are now permenantly insane, which is similar to death in this RP. However, there is permenant insanity as well, gained a different way (Actually learn to cast spells, read cursed book and learn more from the insane writings of the cults, etc.), and as you learn more, you have a lower max sanity at all. You might say "I'll just never learn spells or read books!" But while the writings are horrible and drive you mad, they have valuable information in them like monsters and/or gods weaknesses, or critical spells to save you all, so you have to very carefully judge the risk of insanity versus the benafit of knowledge and spells. EDIT: And as for the twink, no, although I want to review that twink for usefulness... EDIT2: Alright, I found those twinks, and since all three of them basically make you totally useless and shift all risk onto you allies, I'm going with no... |
The twinks were jokes. As, I'm sure, was the suggestion that we use them. As, possibly as Forever's Zero's mention that they were useless. As is this.
Maybe. Anyway. If you want to actually use rules, you might want to try www.playbyweb.com for this sort of thing; it's a heavily-coded forum of sorts, with the ability to set up your own board, roll dice which everyone can see, etcetera. 'Course, I'm just suggesting that because I want to play C'thulhu really badly, but also want rules. Rules are important with C'thulhu. |
That's true, the only problem with adapting a Paper & Pen RP to a Forum format is you have to drop most dice roll unless the GM does some behind the scenes, and I would lose out on things like checks on if they notice a critical clue, luck cecks, weapon checks, and the all important sanity checks. I'll check out that site though and see if it could work.
EDIT: Sorry, but the Cthulhu section seems to be down. |
Sounds interesting. I'd sign up if I get back.

Well, it seems I have at least some support for the idea, so I might turn this into a Sign-Up, but if I do, note it would be a while before I even started the RP. It would just let me work out any problems people might have since I prefer to use complex Sign-Up sheets. And as a bit of warning, I plan on using the 1920's universe for the RP, not modern, so keep that in mind if you are thinking of a certian character type. Also keep in mind, we aren't warriors, we won't all be kung-fu ninja with dual pistols, slaying monsters with a vengence, we will a bunch of average people investigating strange phenomena, and you should make your characters accordingly, so most likely not everyone would be a master with a gun, or perform any crazy gun-fu trikcs in a fight.

So it would be alright if there was a guy who had gone through WWI?
