Original Xbox games coming to XBLA?

Computer and Video Games.com put up an article about original Xbox games coming to XBLA, but it was pulled. The original article said this:

The Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update has been revealed to our colleagues at OXM from Microsoft and it's looking very good indeed with gaming classics and films on demand.

December 4 is the date you'll need to watch out for; that's the day you'll be able to download and play Halo. Yes, Halo as in the Xbox game, through Marketplace, on your Xbox 360.

Microsoft is introducing games it has published for the original Xbox on XBL Marketplace, with the eventual plan to bring as much of the back catalogue across as possible.

Games cost about 1200 Microsoft points (about ten quid), which according to us puts them a little over what you'd pay for them second hand.

The initial list of downloads includes Halo, Fable, Fahrenheit, Crimson Skies: High Road To Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. All good then, apart from maybe Crash.

And if that wasn't enough, films on demand, though not confirmed for the December 4 date, aren't far away. Studios such as Warner Bros are potentially lined up for the service, so we can look forward to films such as The Dark Knight, The Assassination of Jesse James and I Am Legend appearing eventually.

Films will cost less than a fiver and come in 720p resolution. You have 14 days to start watching a film once it has downloaded. Once you started watching a film, you have 24 hours to finish it. After that, the film deletes itself from your hard drive. It's basically an online rental service then, like the US Video Marketplace.

What do these new additions mean for the future of Xbox Live Arcade? Does the PS3's PSOne download service now look horribly dated? It's going to be an exciting 2008 in the download space, for sure.

If it is true, it'll be a great move on the part of Microsoft.

But why release games form last gen? You can still buy most of those in stores, and for less, second hand anyways. Plus, having a disk just gives you better piece of mind if your 360 bricks and you need it replaced.

I can only hope that they've got some fancy dan new compression algorithm for it because otherwise, that'll be one huge set of downloads per game. Symphony of the Night was bad enough but things with proper FMV? Eeesh.

I thought that only the more expensive version of the 360 was BC. So even if you could get a hold of the older title, it isn't exactly like you could do anything with it. This gives people who didn't get the more expensive model a chance to play X-Box titles, right?

Backwards compatibility works a bit differently on Xbox. Rather than have full-BC, you download an emulator kind of thing that can play the game. So you can only have BC with an internet connection and a hard drive. Other than that, different versions of the 360 have the same capabilities.

This is cool, though.

I was unaware that was how 360 BC worked. Really though, since you still need an HD and XBL, doesnt that still leave the core system unable to play original Xbox games?

You can always buy a hard drive for your system

If you have an Xbox live account your all your marketplace information is kept track of so even if you lose or delete something you bought you can always download it again. It also periodically saves your regular game information.

I know because I accidentally wiped my HD and Xbox restored it for me.

I would think that Microsoft wants to keep the money instore. Giving you an emulator and having you buy the Xbox game (at a cheaper price) online is a better option than buying a game through Gamestop where Microsoft doesn't make money.
