Final Fantasy Uber-Geekness

Ok, so I always wanted to make this list, and considering the recent acquisition of like... every final fantasy album ever heard/conceived of, I decided to actually write it down, and then I figured, shit, why not SHARE it?
so here we go.. my favorite tunes from the entire Numbered Series.
Share yours if you'd like.
P.S. The Black Mages arrangements don't count because they are too much distilled awesome, and the advantage is unfair, as not every song has been covered.
so I'm going with the OST versions here..
The remakes, however, are acceptable.

Airship: FF8, The Ragnarok
Battle: FF6
Boss: Toss up between FF6, and FF7 here
Character Theme: Have to go with Terra's from FF6 here
Dungeon/Cave: The underwater temple from FF1 Origins
Desperate Battle: Toss up between the Battle of the Four Fiends from FF4, or the Atma Battle from FF6
End Theme: FF4's without a doubt
Final Battle: FF4, The Battle with Zeromus, or if I wanted to cheat, Advent Children's One Winged Angel
Final Dungeon: FF1 Origins for the win
Opening: FF8 for the shear epicness...
Overworld: FF4 here
Overworld 2: FF5's Unknown Land is awesome, but FF7's Crisis is just scary..
Ruined Castle/Dungeon: FF4 again.
RUN!: FF6 or FF7, can never decide
Villain's Theme: I know I'll be lynched for this, but I think that Edea's from FF8 is the best of the bunch (Sorry, but Kefka's was too waltz-y for me)

Ok, so that's it. Wow, I am such a nerd. lol.
Rawk!

Airship: FF8, The Ragnarok
Nice!

Battle: FF6
I disagree. I happen to like FF8 with Laguna and crew.

Boss: Toss up between FF6, and FF7 here
I like FF7, personally.

Character Theme: Have to go with Terra's from FF6 here
I like Aerith's, but that's kind of cheap considering half of it's borrowed from FF6 and it has a ton of variations.

Dungeon/Cave: The underwater temple from FF1 Origins
Desperate Battle: Toss up between the Battle of the Four Fiends from FF4, or the Atma Battle from FF6
End Theme: FF4's without a doubt
Final Battle: FF4, The Battle with Zeromus, or if I wanted to cheat, Advent Children's One Winged Angel
Final Dungeon: FF1 Origins for the win
Sadly can't comment on any of these. I need to play/finish more of the series.

Opening: FF8 for the shear epicness...
Agreed. FF12 is pretty epic, too, but like everything else in the game, you have to sit zombified and drooling for hours to even get to that part.

Overworld: FF4 here
Overworld 2: FF5's Unknown Land is awesome, but FF7's Crisis is just scary..
Ruined Castle/Dungeon: FF4 again.
I happen to like FF4, as well. I can't choose a second.

RUN!: FF6 or FF7, can never decide
???

Villain's Theme: I know I'll be lynched for this, but I think that Edea's from FF8 is the best of the bunch (Sorry, but Kefka's was too waltz-y for me)
Don't remember Kefka's. Honestly, I'd have to say this section is the one with the slimmest pickings. If pressed, I'd have to say Kuja, but only because it was more in synch with the rest of the game's music.

I'd also like to add that I think the best execution of the victory theme was FF8, but specifically the computer version's, as FF8-PC was heavier on the woodwinds overall, at least on the Yamaha XG-Soft driver from FF7-PC.

I'd consider the best stat-counting music to have come from FF7.

Kerensky287 11-13-2007 03:44 PM

Some of yours I don't really get, so I'll do what I THINK you mean instead...

Airship: FF8. Ragnarok was awesome.

Battle: FF8, Man with the Machine Gun - unless that's a character theme, in which case FF9 wins.

Boss: FF7's Jenova theme is awesome. Regular boss goes to FF3 though.

Character theme: FF8, Man with the Machine Gun - unless that's a battle theme, in which case Red 13 from FF7 wins.

Dungeon/Cave: FF9 Fossil Roo. Hated the level, loved the music.

Desperate Battle: I assume this means a battle you have a hard time and/or no chance of winning, so FF9 Beatrix.

End Theme: Haven't really seen enough of them... but the overall Final Fantasy theme is my favourite, and that's at the end of all of the ones I've seen.

Final Battle: Don't really remember any... but FF8 Edea was good, I think it was Ultimecia's as well.

Final Dungeon: Don't remember any... let's say FF1.

Opening: I want to say Final Fantasy Tactics, but that one isn't numbered, so FF8.

Overworld: FF9, with its section of Melodies of Life... good song, it is.

Overworld 2: The only one I can think of is FF7's, and that sucked so badly that I muted it when random battles ended.

Ruined Castle/Dungeon: FF8, like the cavern where you get GF Brothers...

RUN!: Either RUN as in GET OUT (FF8, the theme you get when you're blowing up the missile base) or as in GET IN (FF8, Garden vs Garden at the end of Disc 2).

Villain's Theme: One Wingel Angel, hands down.

And yes, I realize most of my choices are from PS1 games, but that's because I couldn't stand FF4, thought FF6 was overrated, haven't played FF1 or 11 for years and never finished 2, 3 and 5. I haven't even PLAYED FF10 or 12.

Airship: Redwings (FF4) : It sounded so Imperialistic, so perfect for the redwings of baron.

Battle: FF9

Boss: Toss up between FF4, and FF5 here

Character Theme: Have to go with Cid's from FF7 here

Dungeon/Cave: Kids Run through the Streets (FF6) While I know its not an official dungeon, it is a cool piece. also Mt Koltz (FF6) is nice to hear.

Desperate Battle: Jenova Life. With Aeris' theme playing in the background, its a heart wrenching moment.

End Theme: FF6's So final, each character has their theme. especially Shadow's part. Damn that part was sad.

Final Battle: Tie FF6, Battling the Monument of Non Existance/ FF7 Jenova Synthesis, Bizzarro Sephiroth and Safer Sepheroth

Final Dungeon: Final Fantasy 9

Opening: Place I'll return to someday. FF9: Brought back the fantasy...

Overworld: FF9 From Disk 1, it sounds so quaint. Just how the game was.

Overworld 2: FF6 With Searching for Friends in the Background, its great

RUN!: FF6

Villain's Theme: Tie FF6 Dancing Mad and FF7 J-E-N-O-V-A: One winged Angel was great, but Dancing Mad and J-E-N-O-V-A had that feeling of, you gotta do this, the world depends on it.

Whoops, a misread.

Ok, I'll try to clear a few things up on what I mean...

"Desperate Battle" those battles in each game that were beyond both "regular" battles and "boss battles".... such as Canonical battles between the main villains (Such as the battle with the Four Fiends in FF4) or the Subway battle of FF6.

RUN! meaning those times in the game where your exit is timed, and you've gotta haul ass, or when bad things are happening betwixt battles, and you've gotta get going.

Overworld 2: most ff games have 2 overworlds... such as the WoR in FF6, the Unknown Lands in FF5, or the Meteor Crisis of FF7..

Villains themes don't include the Final Battle with said Villain.. that's reserved for the "Final Battle" spot. lol

that is all.
also, I am a geek, let it be known.

Just to note, FF6 totally wins on random, boss, and desperate battle themes, as well as Opening Theme, Overworld 2, Villain's Theme, and Character Theme (Terra, Celes, Shadow, Relm, Strago, Gogo, Umaro, Cyan, pick one).

FF7 just barely comes through on Final Battle, and just barely comes in second on the random encounter music.

Kerensky287 11-15-2007 12:02 AM

I really don't get what people liked so much about FF6. The music was okay, but the battle music (for example) seemed pretty generic. It fit the battle "feeling", but it didn't seem all that special to me. Not sure why.

Anyway, most of my confused guesses actually fit. And One Winged Angel may be final boss music, but it's also kind of Sephiroth's theme. At least... in Advent Children.

When I was a kid, I'd never had a game speak to me the same way FF6 did, and I still have yet to. It's like how a lot of people get about The Bible. Some people go to church, I fight Atma Weapon.

Well, admittedly, that piece doesn't really grab you until the third movement or so.

Now, The Decisive Battle.... There was some boss music to write home about. It's comes in with a driving, frantic energy that emphasizes the direness of the situation, followed by a more sweeping, heroic progression, alternating back and forth between both moods quite fluidly.

The character themes were each wholly unique to the character (or group of characters, in the case of Edgar and Sabin's shared Figaro anthem) and instantly recognizable, encapsulating the personality of the characters perfectly, from the lonely cello of the orphan Gau to the soaring orchestration of the gambling pilot Setzer to the giddy waltz of the madman Kefka.

Did Sephiroth even have his own theme in that game before the final battle?

Regulus Tera 11-15-2007 04:29 AM

You make that list but don't include Kiss me Good-bye for best theme?! I mean, yeah, the song had nothing to do with the game, but...

http://www.insertcredit.com/features...006/akiwho.jpg

C'mon, don't tell me that isn't beautiful. (Hint: Look at the shirt.)

Either way, here are my choices:

Battle: VI, by far.
Boss: IV, which is also Culex's theme song in Super Mario RPG.
Character Theme: I'm going have to say Tifa, just because the piano rendition brings me to tears.
Desperate Battle: Battle on the Big Bridge (otherwise known as Gilgamesh's theme), XII's rendition.
End Theme: VI.
Final Battle: Dancind Mad, obviously.
Final Dungeon: I'm going to have to say the Bahamut's theme in XII, even if I may be lynched by everyone in here. It's certainly better than the others, at least.
Opening: XII, because Sakimoto's piece works perfectly with Matsuno's direction.
Overworld: Terra's theme, which counts.
Villain's Theme: Kefka's, absolument.

Yes, precisely. Did we stutter?

And contrary to popular belief and my mother's own opinions on the subject, Doctor Who doesn't make everything better.
