FF1 (again)

I'm continuing this topic because I still need to know a few things about the game. Got any tips for anyone?

Martyr 03-13-2004 09:36 PM

Yeah, I played it through to see how fast I could beat it.
I beat the game at lv 14.
I had all the fiends defeated at lv. 12, but it's too hard to get through the ToF without leveling. Worms, Gas Dragons, and Zombie Dragons can't be run from, and they give incredibly high experience.

I think I could've gotten through the whole game at lv. 10 if I could run away from all the enemies, but I kept seeing Wizards in the Ice Cave and freaking ZomBulls... Wizard Seahags... You know, monsters that either can't be run from or require a very high level thief to run from.

Tips:
You can try as hard as you possibly can not to level in FF1 and still win - Leveling is obviously not important at all - But it makes the game a whole lot easier! (At level 12, a Knight does 60 damage to Kraken with an Xcalibur. Kraken does in between 225 and 516)

To beat the game like this -

Lv.1 - Garland, Pirates
Lv. 6 - March Cave
Lv. 6-8 (Hard to dodge all battles because of wizard encounters) - Earth Cave, Ice Cave, Castle of Ordeals, Sky Castle, Tiamat.
Lv. 8-10 - Kary, because I didn't want to take chances with lv. 7. Kraken, only because it's so hard to do damage. You will probably lose party members and some jackass will level.

Lv. 10< - You probably didn't make it this far and stay at level 10 because the Zombie Dragon at the castle of ordeals, the 3 groups of wizards in the Ice Cave, the Seahags in the sea shrine and the ZomBulls on the road to lefein made you fight and they gave too much experience for your low level warriors to not level up.

Party - F/F/T/RM - Fighters always excel, and 2 can still share the maximum equipments (Dragon and Opal Armor - Xcal and Masmune etc..)
Thief can help you run from almost any fight. Also does half decent with a Katana after class change. Even though at low levels Knights and Ninja's won't be able to use any magic. Pity.
Red Mage is important for sporadic healing and halpful spells. There's no need for a full time caster in this party, but there is need for both magics. My RM didn't have the capacity for lv 5 magic until I accidentally leveled to 13 because I couldn't run away from worms in the ToF. So.. Right. You only need 2 FIR2s to kill lich or anything else anyway.
BB's have a lure of that desired high damage, but don't be deceived. They need levels to hit hard, unlike a fighter who's automatically a badass when he gets a weapon meant for a lv. 20 character. Other than that, I don't know why you'd use W or B mages when they won't be able to access magic that a RM can't when it's needed...

So that's my new deal. Now I know... that. Go try to beat my record.

Level fourteen? I'm at thirteen and I'm at the Lair of the Vampire (what's that place called anyway?)!

Ippy 03-13-2004 11:56 PM

Wow...level 13 to beat the whole game?

well I'm not saying it can't be done...but hell.... I couldn't stand the frustration at dying while fighting the Gas dragons

anyways...

The best accomplishments I've had in the game:

1. I actually reached the highest level, level 50 (that's right...only goes up to 50)

2. I figured out how to beat all of the fiends in reverse order lol
all I can say is get your airship before going to the Gurgo Volcano :D

3. Beating the whole game when I was in 2nd grade... ok not so much as an accomplishment today...but it was the first rpg style game I beat

And the best hint I can give any people interested in playing.... If you ever find yourself unprepared in a battle against warmech... consider yourself royally screwed and run like hell :fighter:

At low levels, the secret is to be totally decked out before you do anything.

Lich is easy. No matter what. So you can pass that at level 6 or 7. (At level 7, a red or black mage can spit our a FIR2 at least twice. That's more than enough)

But, once you get the airship, before you take on any other fiends, you gotta fully equip all your characters.
That means get all the best stuff for everybody, including dragon and opal armors, the Defense, Katana, and Xcalibur.
Bane Sword will kill Tiamat, so that's no problem. A Ninja can escape the Warmech, and I'm lucky because I didn't know that a few days ago. Trust me, the only hard part is Kraken, but weak fighters can use the Thor's hammer and Zeus Gauntlet anyway. Plus, Kraken will waste most of his time casting INK or LIT2.

Gas Dragons...? Ribbons. What up. However, you can't run from Gas Dragons and they give 1000 xp per dragon. I had to kill 3 of them and then 3 parties of 4 worms. Just that sent my guys from lv. 12 to lv.14. I'm so annoyed with that. I think I'll go over it and see if I can get a trip through without running into worms or gas dragons.
I think chances are just as good that I'll hit badmen instead of Gas Dragons and/or Frost Dragons and Chimaera instead of worms. Right?
I'll try it again.

Vampire Lair is the Earth Cave. Somebody in Melmond will tell you if you forget.
The town with the water shrine is called Onrac. Everybody agrees on this, but I have no idea where the town's name is mentioned.
Anyway, if you're at level 13, you can handle Lich without a problem. Unless you're a party of thieves. Go hand Lich the Vampires ass and get on with the game. You got one shot of Fire 3 don't you?
You don't need it. But you are still allowed to have fun. So get on with the game.

Tip: After the earth cave, you'll be sent to a town that should be across the map. You will want to travel east for about 20 minutes, crashing into all kinds of random sea encounters which aren't threatening, but they are annoying and time consuming. But don't do that. Go west instead. The world is round.
You um... You've spoken with Matoya's brooms, right? Perhaps you should do that. Unnecessary as it is. They know something that I don't feel like telling you.

Secret that you'll probably never figure out on your own - Get in the ship and press "a" and "b" simultaneously, do it 50 times. Make sure your in the ship at sea. You'll have the oppertunity to pick up some fast cash.

I need some help myself. I am trying to beat the game with a solo thief. Not a ninja, no class change is intentional. I'm level 44, which is nearly maxed out. I still only inflict 1 point of damage on the Kraken except on a critical. I'm using an emulator, but will not reduce myself to save-state combat. I have killed tiamat, kary, and lich. I have what I think are the best pieces of equipment a thief can have (a ninja could have MUCH better though).

Is there any way I can kill Kraken?

Patricoo 03-14-2004 07:58 AM

A tip: the Garlands place is ACTUALLY a line. Thats right, I got lost because I didn't think it was actually that door right there, and I thought there was a key needed. Nope, it's that damn easy. So I was lost forever. WHO DESIGNED THIS INFERNAL MAZE?!

Martyr 03-14-2004 09:18 AM

I never tried it with a solo thief.
What's he got? The coral sword? I don't think it works well against water monsters like it's supposed to, but it's a thought. (You may not have gone out of your way to get the coral sword. It's in the first or second room of the earth cave, if I'm not mistaken. Probably second room, top rt corner. Around there)

If thief can't do good damage, then the best I can think of is to cast LIT2 with the Zeus Gauntlet ot the Thor's Hammer. Casting Ice 2 with the black shirt might be a good idea too.

Somebody mentioned that castinf INVS2 (The White Shirt) about 6 times will make your evade so high that you'll be virtually invulnerable. With out a party of 4 WM's, I don't see where this information could come out useful, but, if you get deswperate, it may be something worth trying.

Otherwise, a solo thief seems unbelievabably difficult, and I only hope that you can Bane Tiamat in the ToF, because I don't recall if it works there. I bet you'll have to pray for a lot of things in the ToF.

Creamsteak 03-14-2004 07:55 PM

Damn... I sold my zeus I bet, because I knew I'd never be able to equip it. I "might" be able to go back for a hammer though. Sold the white shirt too, or might not have grabbed it.

It's been rough. Coral sword, I think, is the best sword a thief can use. My damage rate is crap, but I've got evade as high as I think you can get it. I really hope this is achievable, just for bragging rights.

Martyr 03-15-2004 12:18 AM

Idea: Have you used the power gauntlets?
I'm sure that Thief can't equip them, but I think that they help him attack. They make your weapon stronger or something like that. They're somewhere in the water shrine.
You might want to try using that bfore attacking Kraken and then see if you can do any damage.

Just a thought. Again, it will have to take an armor slot, but, honestly, what are the chances that armor is going to help against Kraken anyway. I think 417 damage to a Dragon Armor/Zeus Gauntlets/Aegis Shield/Heal Helmet Knight comes to mind.

- You sold things like the White Shirt (1 gold) and Zeus Gauntlets when you have absolutely no need whatsoever for money and have 3 dead characters worth of storage??????
Look for the Black Shirt too, it's by the White one. It'll cast ICE 2, which may do as well or better than LIT2 just because it's a lv. 4 spell, and water monsters are often very susceptible to ICE as well as LIT.
