Shatner Angry over Trek Snub

Im not trully set on what to say about Shatner now... but, here it is:

The 76-year old actor, who played Captain Kirk in the original long-running sci-fi show, asked the obvious question to Extra TV,: "How could you not put one of the founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected? That doesn't make sense to me!"

He added: "I've become even more popular than I was playing Capt Kirk - I'm good box office and I get publicity".

The actor, who's also had a singing career, did concede however that the film will be a success without him: "They are going in a different direction and it'll be a wonderful film."

It's not the first outburst from Shatner. Since he found out he wouldn't be in the new Trek he's been complaining to several news organisations. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, he reiterated that not casting him "didn't seem to be a good business decision". He said: "I have the popularity to ensure the movie has a good box office."

The fact Leonard Nimoy has been cast as Spock has only made Shatner's pain more acute. "I'm not in the movie at all. Leonard, God bless his heart, is in, but not me."

The plot details of Star Trek have been kept a closely guarded secret by producers Paramount, but we do know the plot revolves around the early adventures of the Enterprise crew. Chris Pines is the young Kirk while Zachary Quinto is Spock.

The film is set for a winter 2008 release.

So... Spitfull? Egocentric? Or just Right?

Kinda both.
I think the guy's definitely got a bit of an ego, judging by some of the stuff I've seen him in. At least a sense of pride, which he's probably aware of. He doesn't come off as too spiteful to me, just bloody determined to get an answer as to their decision. If I was that well-known, I'd be a bit miffed too if a movie was made based after something I was a star role in, and I didn't get to participate.

Despite his apparently bruised pride, he really does make a valid point. Shatner's just as famous for being Shatner as he is Kirk. Random sentence pauses and all.

Shatner's always had an ego the size of Jupiter, so this kind of behavior is to be expected of him.

I...cannotbelieve...that...they...would...excludeK irk

yeah, Shatner impressions do not transfer well onto the net

Hah! Nicely said Big Mac. Just picture Kirk's face staring into the camera and the words all fall into place. Or maybe out of place. XD

It's not like he has a giant ego but was only ever in a shitty series. Star Trek was incredibly successful. I won't say all of his ego, but some of it is justified. The "proud of what he was a part of" bit.

Funny, I think I'm arguing for this guy, yet I always liked Spock better. Most illogical.

I couldn't help it! Honest!

If the story doesn't really need him I see no point for him to be recast. Henceforth, egotistical maniac.

CABAL49 11-23-2007 08:41 PM

Shatner has a definitely has a huge ego, but Star Trek would not have been what it was without him. Everyone does know who he is, it makes since he wants to be a part of what made him big.

Shatner is pretty much a guy with a massive ego and a career successful enough for him to justify it to himself. this doesn't really suprise me.

Thankfully Star Trek already died back with Voyager and this movie will already be an even bigger example of this.

Shatners anger is just an external sign of the death of Star Trek and how he wasn't able to bring it back to life. Nimoys care-free attitude has just shown us he already sawit happened a long time ago and he's been riding his pay check quite well.

Well, if Nimoy got in how can you not have the Kirk? I agree with him on this topic. All he'll have now are airline ticket commercials.
