Pronunciation in Video Games
Alright, it crossed my mind, and I figured I might as well make a thread about it. ('cause I'm curious, I know it's probably a stupid topic.)
I'm just wondering how other people pronounce things, like names, summons, items, and such, in video games, since I know some pronunciations can vary from person to person. I always pronounced "Tidus" as being "Tie-dus" (long "i" short "u") but in Kingdom Hearts, they pronounce it "Tee-dus" (long "e" sound) Here's a few for me (ones that I've noticed other pronunciations different than how I pronounce them): Shiva: "Shih-vah" (short "i", short "a") (I've heard this pronounced "Shee-vah" before Ether: "Eh-ther" (short "e") Ramuh: "Ruu-mah" (long "u" sound) Chocobo: "Cho-cO-bo" (stress the 2nd "o" more) (I know my "Ramuh" pronunciationg is really weird, it's just how I've come to call him. ^^;; ) So how about you guys? (You don't have to only mention the ones I've already said, by the way.) |
I usually think I pronounce stuff correctly, but my Chocobo was off apparently.
"Choc-o-bo" (Emphasis was on the 'Ch', and you say it mostly together) I got in a fairly big argument about this with a friend once about how to say it, and I never truly admitted defeat until FFX... Those speaking parts killed my argument... And I pronounce Ramuh "Ra-muh" (Emphasis on the 'Ra') Other then that, I pronounce all those others the same, and I can't think of any others I might pronounce odd. |
I had that problem too! I was always saying Choke-o-boe. I convinced many people it was the right way.. Until they began talking. Darn it anyway!
And Mana, that's another difficult one. Thankfully Penny arcade turned me down the right path. |
Shiva is certainly pronounced "Shee-vah".
|
I used to say Ifrit like if-ir-it, don't know why I added the extra "i". I've always prounced it choc-o-boo. It doesn't sound right to say choke-a-bow. For some reason, my brother used to say catastrophe cat-a-stroff. Your guess is as good as mine on that one. One thing I've always wondered is how do you pronounce/spell Cait Sith? I've seen it spelled at least three different ways, like Cat Saith, Cait Sith, and Cait Saith.

Actually I heard that Chocobo is actually pronounce ko-ko-bo in Japan (due to some "incapability" of pronouncing "ch"). I don't know if the source is very reliable so some japanese guru will have to back me up on that one. Ko-ko-bo should be the right way anyway. Well, I do "ether" the way CelesJessa mentioned and "shiva" I do as "sheeva". Other than that I think I'm pretty normal. I have a friend who uses "ram-oo".
I could never pronounce the different pokemon correctly. Of course my friend and I began to pronounce "pokemon" wrong intentionally after it became popular. We decided on the "old man talk" of "poke-e-mans". |
Uh, that's wrong, because they have the ch sound. They can do it quite well, actually.
I played FFX. It IS choe-koe-boe, is it not? Ramuh: Ruumah? Wtf? You must know this is wrong. You're completely misreading the word. I've always said Ray-moo until I found out it was Ram-uh. I hate people who play CT/CC and think Schala is Skala. NO! no! NO! |
I pronounce everything correctly. If you think I pronounce something incorrectly, it is actually not me that is wrong, but the game designers/dictionary/whatever other source you have.
Seriously though... looking at all of those... I pronounce them all the right way. Shee-vah Ee-ther (it's a long e... it's also a chemical compound) Ram-uh and Cho-co-bo. |
All mentioned names I say correctly.
Some new ones... Carbunkle (Is that even spelled right?) - Car-bunk-ul Bahamut - Bah-ha-muth (Don't know where I got the h) Sephiroth - Sef-ear-oth (I know that is wrong, but it sounds better then the right way) |
I go Se-pear-oth, but then it gets shortened to Sephy, so then its Sefy...so confuzling.
