FFXI
I've not seen a topic about this game yet... Does anyone here still play? I just picked up the WoTG (Wings of the Goddess) expansion and I'm starting with a brand new account. I've played almost everything out there except this, and I'm a huge FF nut... so here it goes.

There used to be a few of these threads a while back...
I used to play a while back, but then my Linkshell disbanded and had no one to play with. Eventually, I got bored and stopped playing all together. My character is still there if I ever find an excuse to play again. I used to play in the Asura server, for almost two years. Good times... |
Well I had another account and I closed it awhile back, but I just bought the 07 Vana'Diel Collection so ... i'm starting all over again. With all expansions hehe.. just gonna be a long grind and such.

MMMMM-YES?
Campaign is pretty awesome. Problem is, it takes a little hiking before you can actually participate. DNC is sweet. Constant En-Drain rocks. Anywho, check this Wiki for info on the expansion, it'll tell you all you need to know. Also, there is a mob in these areas that can heal you... and even raise your corpse. All in all, it's a blast. |
i'm just not sure what to play at the moment....
sure i can go white mage and get groups, but i'm not sure... I heard monk is hella hard but worth it in the end....any suggestions? |
Monk is not a hard job. It's one of the easiest jobs ever. You literally just punch things. And you don't really have any complicated abilities or tactics to use.
More importantly, what exactly do you want to do with your character? |
Well I'm not totally sure but Corsair and Blue Mage both peaked my interest.

I remember playing this back when it first came out for PS2 (although I bought it for PC because I couldn't get my PS2 to work online effectively). I played for about 5 months and had a Tarutaru 50 Black Mage/42 White Mage/15 Thief/10 Warrior build on that single character. I remember disliking two major things about the game though.
First was that it was hard as hell to find people to group together at higher and higher levels. Consequently, in that game you HAD to level with a group or else you couldn't really level at all. Also the group finding was pretty limited to shouting in areas that you were looking for a group and that you were of such a class and level. Second was the exp penalty you suffered when you died. I can't recall how many times I gained a level happily and learned a new spell, then died because someone in a group didn't do their job properly and we would wipe, thus my exp being set back into the next level and having to regain the level. It wouldn't be too bad I suppose if it was like Diablo II where you could lose exp to the point where you would be set back at the beginning of the level, but actually losing a level hurt. It was a good experience though when I played despite those drawbacks. I had an awesome Linkshell too but after a few months it disbanded and my interest in the game stopped and I quit within a month due to that and other real world things going on. Sometimes I still miss spamming in Jeuno for warps/teleports for money... Edit: Sorry for the tangent there. Anyway as to what you should play you should go for anything that you'd really enjoy playing, however keep in mind that if you have a good race job/subjob combo you'll be more likely to be invited to groups than the Galka BLM/MNK or the Tarutaru WAR/SMN odd balls. |
The only thing about race that really matters in the game is how Tarus have the best MP, worst HP, while Galka have the best HP, and worst MP. If you're a good player, though, it won't matter too much.
There has been an update on the EXP lost when dying. I think around level 25 it becomes 9% lost instead of 10%, and the most you can lose at maximum is 2400, which is a godsend for players at 75. There are also rings that can boost the amount of EXP you get from fights, and the EXP it took to level up in the higher levels has been trimmed down, too. In the higher levels, if you don't mind the TPburn mentality, it's entirely possible to exceed 10,000+ EXP in one hour. Regarding BLU and COR, COR is a support character, but it's also a damage dealer at the same time. It's stupidly expensive to buy bullets for COR, though. BLU is very versatile, like RDM, but is quite a bit more physical, and they learn spells by beating the snot outta mobs. Some BLU spells require access to special areas, though. And some of the mobs you fight are a pain. You can do a lot with BLU, though, with one of the big things is being able to deliver crazy amounts of damage in a matter of seconds. I've seen BLUs solo high-level EXP mobs with not much trouble at all.... they kinda scare me at what they can do. |
Wow guys thanks a heck of a lot... I really appreciate it. Don if you're still playing lemme know what server you're on I think I could really benefit from the knowledge you know about the game. But I'm thinking I will go with a Elvaan Redmage and meld him into a blue mage ... :D
