God particle found

Check this out

If this is true, this could be one of the greatest things man has ever done.

I may be wrong, but from what I've read, this is the most important particle, as it gives other particles mass. If we could fully understand how it works and how to control it, we could do almost anything. We could be on our way to controlling matter it's self.

It's a brave new world we're entering people.

(note: I'm not sure how right I am, but still. Pretty cool anyway, right?)

A most interesting prospect, indeed.

I find it interesting the amount of things that are discussed as fact in physics, yet have no proof other than calculations.

Many a discussion of black hoiles has been ade in my physics class, yet none of them seem to understand that there is little to no experimental data from black holes, only observational, theoretical, or calculational data.

Nonetheless, any evidence that helps us understand the universe is mose welcome.

can someone break it down to a business administration major who has little grasp of things like theoretical physics?

basically it's the discovery of the particle which is believed to give mass to subatomic particles. Quarks, Leptons and Bosons are what makes up subatomic particles(protons, neutrons, and electrons)

they think they've discovered the thing that makes all other things work under our current theory of thingies.

*large group* Oooooooohhhhhhhh

So... What's that mean for us?

Smashlink 03-15-2004 06:22 PM

"Johnny Socko's Unified Theory of Thingies."

Anyway, it seems to me that in a perfect vacuum, the Higgs boson may be able to be used to create matter, in say, 10,000 years. But, I could be wrong on any account.

I can't wait. If they get the specifics of that particle, they can put it in they're equations and find even more questions about the universe that we never had before. You know that physics is pretty much purely mathematical now, since string theory and everything else only makes sense in math. Thats why people have trouble explaining it, its not something we can experience, nor even imagine except with numbers. So, the technology for this thing will come... in a very, very long time when we are all dead.

So... Like... What can we do, as far as creating matter? Is that a link to, uh...
How about destroying matter. Will this let us do that?

Will my infinitely great grandkids have a little box that they can push a button and make into a pencil, a pen, or a television in a split second?
Can I point it at something and obliterate it from the universe? (People I hate... The clothes of people I hate...)

Or is it yet another lame method of trying to further piece together a scientific theory that can eliminate our belief in God?

...The rest of you will be, but I plan on living at least 10,000 years, just so I can be all like, "I remember when we had this little thing called the LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS! We didn't just go about creating matter willy nilly back then, no siree! We used matter that already existed! That's what we did!"

Seriously though: This is pretty cool... just wish they could make the technology out of it sooner.
