The NP report! homework at its finest!
You read that poor, gramatically incorrect title right! I am doing a report on
So I am curious, asking the fans, which strips do you think best demonstrate his writing style, the personality of the characters and all together the Nuklear-ness of his work? It's a pretty short assignment, so I figured I would do something like this. (And yes, I am doing my best to half-ass this assignment.) |
Uhh...Nintendo Power?
That would be pretty funny if he did make Nintendo power... If you meant Nuklear Power, I'd say every single strip. All of them. Find a color printer, and print them all out (All 927 of 'em) and there will be so much of Brian's writing goodness that your teacher's head will explode and candy will fly out. Realistically, you shouldn't start with the first few comics, as they require a bit more knowledge about RPG's and 8-bit and don't feature as much the wit and good writing we all love today. Probably the best start would be the fight with the werewolves, the climax with the Garland arc, the one where thief gets his class change (original and edited), one with one of BM's charts (his latest is the best for an example of the wit of Brian) and the Dwarven massacre. |
I reccomend the deaths of all three fiends shown so far with a note that they are supposed to be uberbosses, and when Kraken dies it shows how Brian loves the unexpected.

Yes. Nuklear. That's what I meant. Oops!
The Dwarven arc I will probably pull one from, maybe the Elvin area as well. Thanks for the quicktip. I'll skip ahead to the 200's and go from there. Quote:
That's probably one of the most used themes I've seen; putting the joke on the reader, not the characters. |
The BM's "moral" dilemma scene. y'know the one with Fighter being crushed under the armoire.

I'd say that the chapter of Nuklear Age where (spoilered in case it's needed) Brian killed off half of the population of the earth and didn't use a Deus Ex Machina to bring them back. That's totally the best display of wit I've seen in a while.

I was thinking to stick strictly to 8-bit theater, but I could.

I'd say to look for newer ones and older ones and compare and contrast. RM has changed IMMENSELY as a character. For each character, try to find them in certain situations.
BM: dealing with people. Townsfolk and WM especially. RM: dealing with reality. He still has a tendency to ignore it. Thief: dealing with the party and/or items. Thief Thief had much stickier fingers than ninja Thief has, and he has become more violent, especially to RM, since the change. Fighter: being a helper. Look for him aiding his friends. And of course, anyone else you may want to include in their interactions with the party. One tip: Wikipedia is a good place to start looking. It has bios and major events for each character, and will start you off. |
It's only a five or ten minute presentation, so I may have time to do that.
I also have to white-out the dialog from one strip and filling my own. Can't wait for that! |
Wow what class is this for, Heiru?
Also, the comics where the LWs are stuck in the nothingness space (after they get captured by the Cultists) are really good IMO. I'm always impressed by the fact that the LWs could actually see earlier and later panels during those comics and I found it to be a very nice touch on Brian's part. |
