Fact: Chuck Norris sues people over Chuck Norris facts.
Hello peoples, knowing the reasonably recent outbreak of Chuck Norris facts I felt this was something interesting.
Chuck Norris sues over 'mythical facts' Tough-guy actor and martial arts expert Chuck Norris has sued publisher Penguin over a book he claims unfairly exploits his famous name, based on a satirical internet list of "mythical facts" about him. Penguin published The Truth About Chuck Norris: 400 facts about the World's Greatest Human in November. Author Ian Spector, an undergraduate at Brown University, and two websites he runs to promote the book, including www.truthaboutchuck.com, are also named in the suit. The book capitalises on "mythical facts" that have been circulating on the internet since 2005 that poke fun at Norris's tough-guy image and super-human abilities, the suit said. It includes such humorous "facts" as "Chuck Norris's tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried" and "Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits," the suit said, as well as "Chuck Norris can charge a cell phone by rubbing it against his beard." "Some of the 'facts' in the book are racist, lewd or portray Mr Norris as engaged in illegal activities," the lawsuit alleges. Norris, who rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s as the star of such films as The Delta Force and Missing in Action, says the book's title would mislead readers into thinking the facts were true. "Defendants have misappropriated and exploited Mr Norris's name and likeness without authorisation for their own commercial profit," said the lawsuit. The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks unspecified monetary damages for trademark infringement, unjust enrichment and privacy rights. Norris, whose real name is Carlos Ray Norris, claims in the suit he is protective of what his name is associated with. He has recently made US headlines for backing Republican presidential candidate former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. Norris, an author himself of fiction and non-fiction books, has been in more than 20 films. The actor was a six-time undefeated World Professional Middle Weight Karate champion who in 1997 became the first man in the Western Hemisphere to be awarded an 8th degree Black Belt Grand Master recognition in the Tae Kwon Do system, the suit said. A spokesman for Penguin was not immediately available for comment. Not quite sure if it should go in General or Off Topic. I don't think he can actually sue someone over this, since it would be parody. Thoughts? |
Maybe if he wins no one will be allowed to make dumb Chuck Norris jokes.
Maybe I can dream. |
Wait, what?
I think it show how incredibly intelligent Mr. Norris is in saying that facts along side his tears curing cancer could make it so that people think he is racist or engaging in illegal activities. Cause, you know, that's totally what this case is about. And not money. |
Oh, I've read that book. I don't see a problem with those quotes. In fact, if someone wrote a book with those quotes about me, I'd sue anyone who didn't read it. Really, it's all pretty much free publicity for the guy, I don't know why he'd complain. How anyone could take the info in the book as true is beyond me.
He's delivered too many roundhouse kicks in his time, it's messing up his mind. |
Basically, what's happened is the people who made the book have sai the Chuck's made of awesome, but he doesn't like it. Is he getting any royalties from this?

I just don't get how come they say that people might confuse the 'facts' with real facts when the facts presented in the book are horribly and obviously false. |
Mirai, how horribly you underestimate the fathomless depths of human stupidity.
Also yes, it was unauthorized. They didn't seek his permission or give him anything. |
Well, in fairness, I would at least want to give a wave of my hand in permission before ANY books were published about me, be it in my divine worship or horrible slander. If I wasn't given that option, I might not sue (mostly because I just DON'T really sue people for petty things), but I probably wouldn't endorse it positively.
I'm sure Mr. Norris is rich enough that the royalties probably don't matter, but hey, I love money! |
I expect he doesn't care about the money either, the monetary damages is probably just legal fees.

Anyway, it's about how some stupid people think others are stupid enough to believe it, especially kids. Viewers are morons, y'know. |
