Favorite Christmas songs

I know we all have them. What's your favorite Christmas songs?

Trans-Siberian Orchestra: Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24) is one of my top ones, as is David Bowie and Bing Crosby: Little Drummer Boy.

pochercoaster 12-22-2007 08:50 PM

I always liked the John Lennon one.

Mondt 12-22-2007 08:53 PM

I like this.

Fenris 12-22-2007 09:02 PM

Trans-Siberian Orchestra's rendition of Wizards of Winter is pretty sweet.

Not really a song, but as that about 99% of Christmas Music is repetitive, full of onomatopoeias, and played at me straight at work from goddamn Halloween on, I tend to hate all actual Christmas Music.

Bobbey 12-22-2007 10:14 PM

I like the ''How the Grinch Stole Christmas'' song.

You gotta admit it's catchy.

Doc ock rokc 12-22-2007 10:53 PM

tis the best

Satan's Onion 12-24-2007 09:42 AM

What, no "Weird Al" Yankovic? I for one quite like "Christmas At Ground Zero". The holidays could really use more death, panic, devastation, nuclear explosions and mutants, set to a relentlessly chipper, almost Wall-of-Sound-esque tune.

TopHatAssassin 12-24-2007 10:57 AM

I second the Grinch song, it's always sure to please. "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" and "Silver Bells" are up there, too.

Loyal 12-24-2007 11:04 AM

Jingle Bell Rock is one of the 'actual' Xmas songs I can tolerate, mainly because it reminds me of the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that I've always liked.

Also, you can never go wrong with the Twelve Pains of Christmas.

shiney 12-24-2007 11:05 AM

Anything that is a non-standard non-commercialized song. If it's a christmas tune, and in all likelihood it won't be heard blaring over a store speaker somewhere, that's the one I like.

Living Bobbeh 12-24-2007 11:40 AM

The Twelve days of Christmas... possibly. I lost count.

Professor Smarmiarty 12-24-2007 05:02 PM

I always like the Pogues Christmas song which I can never remember the name of.
Only the song though, not the video because if I watch the video I have to look at Shane McGowan.

Meister 12-24-2007 05:06 PM

Fairytale of New York. Funny, I came in to post that.

I heard two cover versions of it on the radio so far and am getting impatient with the radio people for not using the damn original.

Wouldn't that be a standard in itself?

I like Winter by Tori Amos. That's my favorite holiday song.

Bobbey 12-24-2007 09:54 PM

Can the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky count as a christmas song?
Because, well, it's really good and I likes it a lot. :B

Khael! 12-24-2007 10:31 PM

Yah, if that doesn't count I don't know what does!

I forget what that song is called, the one that "Ding Fries are Done" spoofed. It's all minor key and not hemorrhaging unnecessary happy. It also makes me think of little snowflakes falling everywhere.

PyrosNine 12-24-2007 11:04 PM

Strangely enough, other than Alshosha (don't know how it's spelled, despite singing it in chorus) which is a Jewish song I sang once and I liked how it sounded, I don't really have a favorite christmas song.

Y'see, despite the good ol' favorites being the good ol' favorites, I heard them all to death (and poorly done) when I worked at Toys R Us last year. For instance, there was a track from the Star Wars christmas special. Why dear god, why?

So I have become tired of most popular christmas songs as well as a few relatively unpopular ones.

So what do I listen to this christmas?

"Love is the gift." from the The Bouncer by Square Enix, yes, the prototype for "Kingdom Hearts"'s final credits song. It's a jazzy song in the vein of a Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey song, but since the game itself takes place either on or near Christmas or New Year's Eve and is about a "gift", I have always thought of it as a christmas song. So sue me.

Neskvartetten on OverClocked remixes of Zelda songs, particularly Sahasralah's homecoming, and Link goes to new orleans.

Jet set radio's "Grace and Glory"

Both Outlaw Star endings, and strange MP3 I have from a random christmas download that says it's from Duke University, a "Lullaby for Christmas".

Also, I like to sing the Carol of the Bells song, which is the "Ding Fries are done" is copying. It's more fun to sing than listen, I always say, though my voice sucks from the ravages of puberty and the shame of public performances.

Bob The Mercenary 12-25-2007 12:05 AM

There's a version of Can You Hear What I Hear remixed to Baba O'Reilly that I think is awesome.

And I second what shiney said. I find church hymns a lot more pleasant to the ear than the commercialized music out there.

CelesJessa 12-25-2007 11:55 PM

Christmas at Ground Zero has always been a favorite, which the Grinch song, and some other ones that have been mentioned.

The undeniably cheesier.... sickeningly female side of me likes Grown-up Christmas List(as sang by everyone and their moms). Goodness, why does it always make me tear up?

Daimo Mac, The Blue Light of Hope 12-26-2007 12:16 AM

Little town of Bethelhem as sung by Bob Rivers (to the tune of House of the Risign Sun) is cool but a personal favorite is Hark the Herald.

bananarama 12-26-2007 03:15 AM

I just listened to a Reggae version of The Drummer Boy.... fuck yes....

Mike McC 12-26-2007 03:50 AM

The Christmas Song, by Nat King Cole.

Regulus Tera 12-26-2007 04:27 AM

I fucking love Nana Mouskouri.

If it just weren't for those glasses...
