Can you do that?
I wasn't aware you could copyright a pyramid.
Personally, I don't think they should be able to do that, but I do respect what they plan to use the money for. |
And how exactly do they expect to enforce that? Good luck, Egypt.

And they don't expect money from anyone who wants to like, paint a pyramid, or even places that look like pyramids. It's only for exact copies. So someone would have to build a fully functioning pyramid for this to apply (at least, that's what it sounded like to me). I love how the Egyptian newspaper was saying that a portion of Luxor casino's money should go to them because Las Vegas Luxor gets so many more visitors than real Luxor. Umm, maybe more people want to gamble and don't care about ancient monuments? I fail to see how they think they can blame a casino for a decline in their tourism (if it was ever popular to begin with). |
I think the only reason is because they use the draw of the pyramid to get people to gamble there, and Luxor probably feels a bit cheated out. There's gambling, and then there's gambling at a pyramid.
Still, I don't foresee A) a whole lot of luck in this endeavor, B) them actually succeeding in enforcing it anywhere. If you want to get extremely technical about it, United States fair use laws would directly contradict their copyright by a good 7000 years or so? Fair use is supposed to be after 25 years I think. :B A silly argument to be sure but if it's going to be a silly law, may as well meet it face to face, or something.. |

Also this is a kind of silly subject in any case, so to spare myself having to warn people for the dozen or so imminent "LOL EGYPT IZ DUM" posts I'mma move to General. |
Lolz Egypt is dumb.

On-topically, it's fun to see our own legal system's concept of copyright law taken to it's logical and hilarious conclusion.
I mean sure it looks silly on Egypt's part, but given our home-grown corporations' efforts to 1. make copyrights immortal, 2. extend them to every aspect of a businesses' product no matter how common or mundane, and 3. expand enforcement of said policy beyond our own borders, something like a company claiming "We own triangle buildings everywhere forever!" is probably the inevitable result. |

Anyway, back on topic... I can't wait to see them at least try to enforce this, but mostly I think that this is a statement saying "Hey, we got the pyramids." and this whole thing is an attempt to drum up tourism. |
Oh, no doubt about the tourism. And it will work too, probably....a lot of people probably don't associate Luxor, Egypt with pyramids, so it will probably help their international image somewhat, while at the same time potentially damaging their credibility. But money speaks louder, I guess?
