MMORPGs

so, what MMORPG is the best, out there, in your guys opinions?

Ace of Spades 03-17-2004 05:46 PM

Everquest, fianl fantasy XI, and Runescape

I'm currently playing FFXI. It's pretty fun, I enjoy it, but it's hard finding parties sometimes unless you know people who play. I just don't have a lot of free time, so it's made it where I can't play it as much anymore. The game itself is extremely beautiful.

I'm a long time player of Ultima Online as well, and while it's not as good as it used to be since the last expansion, it is still one of the best, if not the best MMORPG out there, in terms of overall. Good community, good PvM, even better PVP (the best pvp I've ever played with on any MMORPG without a doubt.)

wait for everquest 2 to come out. That game will kick so much ass. I'm already saving up so I can jack my computer to meet the requirements. then GOOOOOOODBYE social life!

Im planning on City of Heroes, and maybe World of Warcraft myself(when they come out)

If you don't mind text... instead of a MMORPG, I'd suggest www.mudconnector.com

As for MMORPGs though... all I've really played was The Realm... which was, incidentally one of the first ones. It was cool... no idea what it's like now though.

I find MMORPGs to be a flawed genre. THe entire principal itself isn't suited for massive play, atleast, not in its current form, where much of it is derrived from D&D...

How much of generic MMORPGs is derived from Dungeons and Dragons, besides the hack n' slash element? A good Dungeons and Dragons game is supposed to have a living setting, which is something that MMORPGS should strive to achieve with the players. The fundamental boredom I have with the whole MMORPG thing is that your character means NOTHING. Nomatter what, your character is just some other random hacker and slasher with your magic loot you robbed from every living creature in your path. The direction that some designers want to take the genre is towards a world where characters really do accomplish things as a whole, which I think is the right direction, while some other designers just want a more efficient hack n' slash for the junkies.

Everquest is quite obviously derived from Dungeons and Dragons. The point I'm making is concepts such as "classes", "levels", "quests", are all flawed and derrived from D&D, or table top games in general. These ideas are meant for a number just a tad smaller then three thousand people. After all, how many "main characters" can a quest have in such a situaion? Whos character is important? Is it really any fun playing Joe Schmoe? Kind of like how no one ever has "past life regressions" as poor worthless farmers with barely enough money to live, spending their entire lives in their small peice of land.
Edit, so we agree generally, it's just how we look at it...

IHateMakingNames 03-17-2004 11:10 PM

Every RPG has "classes", "levels" and "quest". So everything is just stolen from D&D?

As for MMORPGs... Do you want a free one, or are you going to pay?
