What Do You Remember From Your Childhood That Has Been Cancelled Or Changed?

For me, it's Sesame Street.

My childhood.

It was a shame that it was canceled.

Everything cool. Ninja Turtles, Transformers. Think of any cool early 90's cartoons and those are the ones. Oh and Sega. Stupid butthole people not buying the Dreamcast and causing it to fail.

Regulus Tera 01-07-2008 11:25 AM

Beakman's World

Dinosaurs (as in the TV Show)

And I concur with childhood. I miss that shit.

mauve 01-07-2008 11:51 AM

Yes! Definitely Bill Nye the Science Guy.

And Fischer-Price Great Adventures Pirates. Those things were awesome. My sister and I had a small army of them, as well as the Great Adventures Knights. The best part were the various cannons and catapults that came with the various ships, that you could shoot these tangerine-sized vacuum molded rocks out of. They got some distance, too. We discovered early on that you could shoot the PIRATES out of the cannons too, which made for a lot of fun. Waay better than this Imaginext crap they've got now. XD

We liked pirates before it was COOL for girls to like pirates.

TopHatAssassin 01-07-2008 12:14 PM

The megazord sets from Power Rangers. These days they all come in a bazillion different parts and configurations and you can strap the parts onto the Ranger figures to make super Rangers that can fly and shoot laser rockets and everything and they all light up and have uber-action sound effects. It's really quite ridiculous. I still have the set of the first ever zords (Dragonzord included), and really I think that's all you need. Give me the five or however many bots there were and let me put them together with each other, not their pilots.

I suppose, then, that I miss simple toys. These days they have too many flashing lights and sounds for my taste. I don't want my Optimus to talk to me in three different languages, I want him to transform and kick some ass!

Oh, and the whole childhood thing I miss, too.

Oh I remember those things! Mutha fucks were deadly if you stepped on them. You would have a hard time walking for a week. Fun to play with and I too liked launching them out of cannons for no reason. I had mostly knights though and only a few pirates.

Mike McC 01-07-2008 01:38 PM

A wealth of discussion on this very topic (if you look only at the TV side) from about 9 months ago which will probably do a lot to jumpstart even more memories of stuff and realize that you miss the simple innocence of not realizing how crappy TV was and not being so damn critical of every flaw that you perceive, while also reminding you that you watched way too much fucking TV as a kid.

Oh, and my answers are in there. Because I like to be difficult.

Normally I'd say Transformers and Beast Wars, but hey - we do have Animated right about now, and it's great.

Red Fighter 1073 01-07-2008 02:40 PM

Most of the shows from the '90s. Old Rugrats (the ones now are terrible), Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life, and Hey Arnnold.

Khael! 01-07-2008 02:50 PM

I miss digging in the dirt in my backyard - back then nobody questioned my digging of foot-sized pitfall traps. Now it's gotta be "I'm making a new fence" or "I'm doing something construction-related because I'm an adult."

I just want to make boobytraps!

Professor Smarmiarty 01-07-2008 03:55 PM

Building forts on the clifftops out of bits of wood we scavenged from the forest. No way they let you do that stuff anymore.

And it was late in my childhood but Fraggle rock. Oh man that show was awesome.

You should make a remote controlled auger and dig up through people's living rooms, right over the huge rug in the center (which is obviously in every house). Adults are only allowed to booby trap things if they're A: mentally deranged, or B: using technology to their full advantage.

Frostatine 01-07-2008 04:43 PM

People not caring what kind of shoes or clothes you wore, and ther not really being any cliques. Riding a bike feeling like the fastest freest thing I have and will ever do.

Oh, and Goosebumps, those were amazing, yet now I can't appreciate their genius.

Also the coolness of ones bike being decided by its number of gears. I miss my 40 speed.

Zilla 01-07-2008 05:29 PM

SHAME ON YOU ALL FOR NOT MENTIONING REBOOT.

Also Sam and Max, The Tick, and.. was Freakazoid canceled before 2000?

Video games haven't been as innovative as they were when 3D was new. I miss that feeling.

PCD 01-07-2008 06:24 PM

Seconded on Blues Clues. I miss Steve.

Spongebob Squarepants. When the hell did they start making 3-part episodes, and how can I kill that time period?

Polly Pocket. It went from super-choking-hazard fun to some weird posable fashion diva chick thing. I wouldn't mind so much if there were any resemblance at all to the original.

Kid channels. Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network used to be enjoyable.

Belm 01-07-2008 06:27 PM

Speaking of Reboot...

I miss when Toonami was cool. I of course have graduated from them now but they still introduced me to some cool shows and a whole new world of stuff to watch.

Khael! 01-07-2008 06:57 PM

Phil, and that purple tv thing on YTV in the Zone. Phil was a chiller. Tv needs more chillers.

Hell, I miss everything the Zone was about.

Yeah, and "The N" used to be "Noggin," which showed educational kid's programming including the aforementioned Bill Nye and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. Far cry from the Degrassi-clone shit they've been showing ever since the change over, eh?

Frostatine 01-07-2008 07:38 PM

REBOOT!

Jeez, Gigabite used to be the scariest thing in the world. The world. To a kid the world is a pretty big place, and to me, Gigabite was the scariest thing in it.

You now understand what an intimate relationship I had with computers growing up.

Speaking of which-Lemmings.

Snit... or Snot. Something like that. They also had that Fear Halloween thing. Then they had an 11 year old host, now they have these weird short blips where it's like "You're watching YTV!"

Kerensky287 01-07-2008 10:34 PM

It was Snit, because they later on had "You're watching YTV's Snit Station!"

...I miss Speed Racer, but they're making a movie remake of that. Where by "they" I mean the Wachowski Brothers. Should be interesting.

And, uh.... Beast Wars. I think Transformers has already been mentioned, but I would watch Beast Wars and Reboot every day.

h4x.m4g3 01-07-2008 11:19 PM

Doug, I miss Doug.

Also when parents tried to shield their children from profanity instead of thrusting them into it. No I'm not saying morals declining like an old man. But I'm tired of seeing 4 year olds dance like hookers and other imitations of popular rap artist, and being actively encouraged to do so.

Also crazy haircuts. I remember demanding a lightning bolt, number, initials, and racing stripes be cut into the side of my head.

Darth SS 01-08-2008 12:40 AM

Transformers! In the season opener of the newest series, Optimus (motherfucking) Prime (motherfucking) runs from (motherfucking) Starscream.

Breakfast cereals

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Construction quality of toys

Athletes being exceptionally "out there"

Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch

Those same 5 pre-recorded gun noises that were used for every single movie ever.

Parachute pants, which contrary to Fifthfiend's opinion were the finest garment ever created by super-science.

MC Hammer's cartoon.

Jurassic Park being referenced EVERYWHERE.

And, the big one, having faith in humanity. That was cool. Why did the network cancel it?

Fifthfiend 01-08-2008 12:44 AM

You know I kind of wish they'd just stop making Transformers.

Seriously G1 and Beast Wars were all you guys fuckin' ever needed to do; now just put it away and leave it the goddamn hell alone.

Hatake Kakashi 01-08-2008 03:57 PM

The NES.
The SNES.
The Genesis.
The Saturn.
A music world free of Britney.
Golden Boy.

And a much simpler life. Yes.

Regulus Tera 01-08-2008 04:06 PM

Hey, I just remembered what: Dexter's Lab.

Seriously, I went to TV and Movies and saw a thread called Dexter and my heart went aflutter. Then I realised it was some other Dexter I don't know shit about and that sucked. Fuck you.

Fifthfiend 01-08-2008 05:37 PM

Dexter's Lab was okay for the handful of episodes before they made the whole show about Deedee and turned Dexter into a retard.

Professor Smarmiarty 01-08-2008 05:49 PM

Dexter's lab for me was weird. See I always remembered it being good but I can't remember ever watching an episode that was actually any good. I can't explain it.

TopHatAssassin 01-08-2008 05:53 PM

I think it was just Dexter that made the show good, not so much what he got into but more the character. I always liked his suit that would pop out of the backpack, though.

Hatake Kakashi 01-08-2008 06:38 PM

I was particularly fond of the Mandark episode. You know the one.

The one where everything, brushing his teeth, chewing his food, crying, everything is all done to the same pattern as his laugh.

It was perfect.

In regards to my list, yes, I can still play these, but they're not making nifty stuff for them anymore.

neyo the king 01-08-2008 06:49 PM

Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, and Johnny Bravo.

Like when they're all playing "Spank the Monkey?" That's the only one I remember off the top of my head. And yes, that's what made that show so great. There was, literally, something for everyone.

Edit: Well, look what I found.

Frostatine 01-08-2008 07:46 PM

Heh.

That show always left me feeling dirty after I watched it, I am now old enough to realize that it wasn't just the art style.

For some reason I never like Ren & Stimpy though, too low brow for even a 7 year old.

I distinctly remember the episode where Mr. and Mrs. Bighead try to rekindle their love. Which brings to mind, how the fuck did one of Filburt's sons end up being a copy of Heffer?!

neyo the king 01-08-2008 09:21 PM

This video was helpful.

And the 80's alternative, although that's admittedly a little too old for me.

Thanks to that video, I remembered Pirates of Dark Water for the first time in ages. That was a rockin' show.

Xaeta 01-08-2008 09:29 PM

Those were awsome!!

Hahah! I remember playing the original Oregon Trail and Odell Lake on those huge things. We thought they were so hi-tech because the oxen walked. Odell Lake was cool to play cuz you got to be a fish, or at least that's what we thought at the time: Looking back, the whole premise was if you saw a bigger fish, run, and if you saw a smaller fish, eat it. Woo.

Our school had a color-matching game too, which only worked on one computer because the rest only had those screens that were just amber-on-black. XD

Seil 01-09-2008 02:09 AM

I played Third Courier and Treehouse.

Professor Smarmiarty 01-09-2008 03:45 AM

PoliceQuest was where it was at. Cause brutally beating up innocents with your baton, all conveyed by text is awesome.

peachypeach 01-09-2008 04:18 AM

I was thinking alot about this then I realised that 2 shows I really miss from when I was younger are Danger Mouse and Count Duckula.

ruru

greed 01-09-2008 07:31 AM

Rocko was my favourite for the old shows.
Also you guys left out all the dirtiest things on Rocko. Rocko working for a phone sex line ("yeah, yeah, oh baby yeah""tell me what you're wearing""MRS BIGHEAD!?") the fetish episode("I like rainbows""YOU SICK FREAK!") and of course, the time they milked Heifer. Much to Heifer's enjoyment. That show got away with soo much. Also that censored scene was, so ridiculous I'm amazed they even got to animating it.

And I remember one really good episode of Dexter, the Muffin King. That was epic.

This, also Angry Beavers. Caught an episode of that a year or so back, that was ALL about masturbation they called it tail slapping. I remember that ep being distinctly crappy as a kid, but find it hilarious now, it was so overloaded with innuendo it wasn't actually funny to kids.

Ren and Stimpy and Pete and Pete were also favourites. Especially Wiener Barons from R&S and the Rock,Paper Scissors ep of Pete and Pete.

Fenris 01-09-2008 08:05 AM

I'll be honest, I miss TechTV from when I was younger.

The Screen Savers were awesome and fuck you if you think otherwise.

Ryu Van Burace 01-09-2008 08:14 AM

y'all talk about ReBoot and i'd like to point out:

It's coming back.

I miss old crisp bag sizes. Think about it. They used to come out from a vending machine all big at 40g.

Then 35g.

Now it's like 20g. And yet cost more.

I miss really cheesy cartoons like Pole Position, Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors, Ulysses 31, Dungeons and Dragons and Thundercats.

Oh and Battle of the Planets - they still show that on Hong Kong TV.

Wacky Racers! Top Cat! *sees lots of blank stares* wow I feel old...

And for those in the UK - the BBC science program: Tomorrow's World. That was all flavours of awesome, it made science and technology accessible to young minds.

Belm 01-09-2008 01:53 PM

Wacky Racers!

Them were some good times. Silly Dastardly (that villain racer?) and his dog, I also think he got some kind of spin off where he tried to catch a pigeon or something.

Ryu Van Burace 01-09-2008 02:05 PM

Dick Dastardley and his dog, Muttley. And the spin of was called Catch The Pigeon :)

mauve 01-09-2008 02:21 PM

I'm probably the only person here who watched My Little Pony Tales as a child, so I don't expect many "OH YEAH I REMEMBER THAT!" comments. Maybe a few "WTF Mauve?"s, though...

Anyway, I actually got bored and looked on Youtube for My Little Pony, and boy howdy do I not remember it being that lame and sexist. I remember more "Let's go on an adventure! Cuz we're ponies!" and far less "I can't go to the costume party because I want to be a super model when I grow up and everyone will laugh at my dreams of finally being beautiful in the eyes of mainstream society!" (actual episode premise) Wow. That really freaked me out. I watched that stuff??

But yeah, other cartoons I watched all the time were Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (I wanted to be called Gadget all the time because I loved it so much), Snorks, Smurfs (both in reruns), TaleSpin, Gummi Bears, Pound Puppies, Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Angry Beavers, Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, Blazing Dragons, The Mighty Ducks cartoon.... I watched a lot of TV as a child, I guess... Mainly Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and public broadcasting. PBS was where I got my daily doses of Bill Nye, Kratt's Creatures, and Wishbone. XD

Are you freaking kidding me? I watched it all the time, under the premise that my 'sister' was watching it. My dad thought it would "Make Mah boy a fag". It was awesome. XDD I have a my little pony episode favourite'd on youtube even.

PBS was my second favourite channel growing up. :P

bluestarultor 01-09-2008 02:28 PM

BUCKY O'HARE! Sorry, but I had to say it. I had a first issue comic of it as a kid. I also watched the show and loved the arcade game.

S.T.U.N. Runner. Great game.

Any Apogee game. Especially Hocus Pocus, Riptide and Jazz Jackrabbit.

Commander Keen, young'ins.

Saban's many shows.

Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos, Monkey Island, and Simon the Sorceror.

EDIT: OH! And Pirates of Dark Water.

Fairy's are awesome. Kind of.

Also, my childhood was built on Mario, Commander Keen, and Nickelodian (mainly Rugrats).

Also, I fondly remember a series of "educational video games", called Clue Finders. I really loved those.

Flarecobra 01-09-2008 06:06 PM

Man, when I was younger, I was a bit of a Nicklodion fan.

Now, I cannot see the appeal of some of the shows.

Barahad 01-09-2008 06:25 PM

I miss when TLC used to run programs on dinosaurs nearly every evening. Because dinosaurs are much cooler than renovation shows and fashion makeovers and whatever the hell else they're running on that channel now.

I also miss Dog City. An animated canine private eye who constantly breaks the fourth wall to interact with his creator/animator? So very funny.

Oh, I also miss play structures. Seriously. Who doesn't love running around for no particular reason and sliding on slides and climbing stuff? But they don't make those things for adults. No no. We get gyms and such. Build a play structure for adults, and I guarantee the population would be in better shape!
