Spider-Man: No More Marriage? (spoilers!)

So the Internet tells me this is a pretty big deal.

For those unaware, Marvel Comics just wrapped up a big story arc where Spider-Man and Mary-Jane's marriage is - and I'm speaking literally here - magically erased from ever having existed. Or erased from the memory of everyone's existence of ever having existed. Also everyone who knows Spider-Man's identity has forgotten it, and Harry Osborne isn't dead anymore, and probably a couple of other things I am forgetting.

So I thought this was a thing that we could talk about.

Personally I find myself thinking of Spider-Man retcons as like Communism: Maybe there's some inherent flaw that continually causes them to fail, maybe it's just some cosmic coincidence that it's only ever power-mad incompetents who try to put them into practice, but either way it would probably be best to move on and try something new.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who actually enjoyed the story, and by interested I mean "I will probably end up hollering at you until I go blue in the face" but I mean, don't let that stop you.

I'll fail you in the "read the story and enjoyed it" front because I never fucking read comics, but that part really interests me. What contrivance did they come up with now? Amnesia dust? Bullet to the heart?

A magical demon made everybody forget.

...I again hasten to point out that this isn't like, my sarcastic summing up of an actually complicated which I am attempting to denigrate via caricature. That is literally what happened.

To expand a bit: Aunt May was about to die, Peter wanted to save her, Mephisto (the demon) turns up and says I'll bring your aunt back to life, but in exchange I'm going to make the world forget you were married, and nobody will know your secret identity anymore, and your pal / former Green Goblin will be back alive (but he won't remember ever having been a villain) and you'll have web shooters again instead of that weird organic-webbing that they put in a while back to match the movies." And then he does exactly that.

Also apparently not marrying Peter Parker turned MJ into a superhero in her own right.

I guess there's only so many times you can fall off a building before you have to save yourself or something.

See. It's crap like this that makes me never wanna read comics.

Naw comics by themselves are great. Mainstream comics - Superman/Batman, any Deadpool, The Avengers, and (apparently) Iron Fist are all superb.

But this is basically part of the whole "We have to make Spider Man somehow new, even though we ran out of material like fifty years ago." The guy has like six books out that are always on comic book lists all over the US. Spider Man is simply too much money to be able to stop.

I mean this is probably the worst retcon I've ever seen, and I'm a Transformers fan.

I don't think we know yet what, exactly, Mephisto changed for the marriage to have never happened. He said it was something very small, but the world often turns on such small events.

I'm also betting this "retcon" does not last. I'm not even convinced it is a retcon. No, I now see it as another villain that will be defeated to return things to normal. If "House of Suck," excuse me, "M" can be undone so easily, there's no reason this can't be.

As far as Mephisto goes, I'm still waiting for this epic war he tried to keep Kurt Wagner out of to start. That was during the limited "Nightcrawler" run. And it's supposed to happen "soon."

Mirai Gen 01-08-2008 10:59 PM

I'm betting it does last - it's going to give the writers some more fuel to work with since now they can do whatever the hell they want. And hey, a few years down the line, gasp in shock, Mephisto gets foiled!

It's just stupid that they really just set it up so that way one person could go "HAH! I have the power to rewind time and fix everything for you! And I'm doing it cause I'm evil! Hah, that'll show you considering now you're going to probably find her again and foil my plan while I'm watching!"

Doesn't really work.

EDIT: It's really lame considering it would have worked just fine if they made it so Peter decided not to, thereby sewing some seeds of despair within himself since he had the opportunity to save May, but he didn't. Therefore he basically traded May for MJ, and he has to live with that choice.

But, nope! All a big retcon story arc!

Ok I get how removing their knowledge of him would cause various things to change. But why does that affect his webshooters?
