Metal Gear Solid 4, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?
I'm very pumped for Metal Gear Solid 4. I really wanna play it. I do, I do. But this has me worried:
Trailer 1 ...Monkies? Gun Runners? This has more of a focus on Naomi's womanly traits than the other trailers have, I'll give it that. But this also has shots of Liquid Ocelot being badass in a Metal Gear Ray, so I can forgive it. (=3) And it has a shot of Olga's kid, so... props for that. But with the inclusion of the new FOXHOUND Unit, the gunrunner and his monkey, as well as having - iuhnno if this'll be true or not - a side thing with Vamp and Raiden... it has the potential to be really, really, really cool... or not. But yeah - there are better trailers out there. Lots and lots of trailers. Quite a lot. There's even 15 minute ones. It's not that I'm completely turned off by this. But it is... unsettling. I'll have to wait until it comes out, to judge, though. |
I just have one thing to ask you: Since when are monkies in diapers, gun runners, boobies and wacky cyborg bosses unfitting to the Metal Gear universe? Especially the third one, considering Snake Eater had plenty of gratuitous shots of Eva's front and back racks.

I haven't played MGS3 really, yet - so Iuhnno about Eva. But I dunno. I'm just thinking that all of a sudden we're introducing new characters, possibly a buy-your-weapons instead of find them system and whatever else have you.

The only new characters I see in that trailer are Olga's daughter (Sunny), Drebin, and the monkey. Drebin's purpose in the game is, if I remember correctly and going by the trailer, to modify weapons you find so that you are able to use them, since they are apparently genetically manipulated (however the hell that works) by the PMCs.
It's kinda like weapon selling, though I doubt Kojima will include currency in the game. But I certainly do not see a whole bunch of new characters being introduced at the last minute. |

I'm talking about these people too - aside from Meryl. But I first saw the shortened version of the 15 minute trailer, and I was kinda thinking it was gonna be Snake, Liquid/Ocelot, Campbell, Meryl, Naomi and Raiden. There was gonna be mention of Olga's child, and the BATB unit was gonna be new (but that's to be expected of all MGS games) and that's why I was so surprised when Eva popped back in. I was thinking that they were going to take the original people and end with them. I'm not saying I'm disappointed because of it, I'm just saying... it'll be something to experience first. |
Okay, the two guys in the back are new, but that's it. They do not seem to have such an important role, anyway. They are Meryl's sidekicks.
I mean, in every sequel you have to include new things to make them seem fresh and more unique. This doesn't seem to me any different than introducing new characters such as Luna's father in the last Harry Potter book. Yeah, they do serve a purpose, but I doubt they will be pivotal in the grand scheme of things. |
And the guy at the bottom. Who takes a dump in Snakes oil drum.
.... (>>) |
Johnny Sasaki, diarrheatic whose clothes are stolen by Meryl in Metal Gear Solid 1 and appears as a cameo in Sons of Liberty. He's the grandson of Johnny Sasaki, red soldier who suffers from constipation during the Snake Eater incident.

Yeah, the one who is very easy to fool when Snake is imprisoned in MGS - his presence makes me hopeful that the FOXHOUND team will be nothing more than sidekicks. But Meryl talking about how the nanomachines allow the team to share senses makes it seem as if they have a bigger role. Plus, the nanomachines seem to be their downfall in another trailer, in which many of Liquids forces are dying, if not in a lot of pain due to the nanomachines originating from FOXDIE... or at least part of it.
Iuhnno - all my troubles will probably seem unfounded once I actually get the game, and they kinda do now... But I dunno. |
First of all, Drebin is an answer to the stupid concept in MGS, MGS2 & MGS3 where you can't pick up weapons of the fallen. The retcon explanation in MGS2, is that all weapons have a sort of fingerprint ID system (like the weapon in License to Kill).
I don't think that Foxhound as a whole will be comic relief, but I suspect Johnny certainly will. Also, I suspect that he won't initially be part of Foxhound. Why? Because in this trailer, its obvious that he doesn't have any Nanomachines in his body. The gameplay demonstration looks pretty solid, and despite the fact that all we've seen is the Mid-East background, I've heard that MGS4 will be all over the world. Having at least one stop at Shadow Moses, of course. Nothing I've seen makes me all that worried, true its got quirky character, but all of the MGS games have had that. The only difference is that they're in the field with you this time, instead of just being on radio. SWB |
