A Superbowl thread

Well, at least two major upsets in the NFL, what with the Colts being knocked off of the playoffs, and the Cowboys losing agenst the Giants. Next week's championship games should prove to be quite interesting.

Of course, I'm still hoping that the Chargers knock out New England....but they're not 16-0 due to just luck.

Bob The Mercenary 01-14-2008 07:14 PM

GO BIG BLUE GO!

I am still dazed from the win last night. That was probably the most exciting game I've ever sat on the edge of my seat and watched. I'm hoping for an epic Pats/Jints rematch, but Favre could prove trouble. And even in that Superbowl matchup the spread will probably approach the teens, much like the upcoming game against the Chargers, not that they can't pull it out.

And to all those Cowboy critics out there, I am no fan of the 'boys, but stop pounding on Romo. Please.

Fenris 01-14-2008 07:15 PM

I honestly hope the Packers win this year and that Favre retires after this year.

Just so the guy can go out on top, he's earned it.

Bob The Mercenary 01-14-2008 07:17 PM

Or...the Giants could take it home, end three career seasons in a row, and become the most hated team in football. :D

Raiden 01-14-2008 09:24 PM

I'm all for the Packers taking the Super Bowl again, and Favre ending his career on one last Super Bowl victory.

Also, we completely tore apart the one Cowboy Fan at our work today. It was horrible.

"Hey, Wess! Did you see? T.O. cried like a bitch."

We kid, we kid...oh but I'd love to see the packers make the bowl.

Haha wow, that's so mean but so funny at the same time.

But yeah, I'm a hometown Pats fan through and through, but I won't argue that it would be nice to see the Packers and Brett Favre win like you guys said. I absolutely hate Midterms though because I spent my entire Sunday studying and I ended up missing two of the biggest games in this year's playoffs. I missed the Sportscenter after that so I haven't even been able to watch the highlights. aww damnit =(

I actually got the first request in the "all request lunch hour" one of our radio stations has. I requested You Can't Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones and dedicated it to T.O. There were a few other good ones too, someone requested When the Levee Breaks.

Also, the New York Post has his face pasted on the cover, crying, calling him "Tear-ell".

Death by Stabbing 01-14-2008 10:28 PM

*gasp* You can't say "Superbowl" without the express written consent of ABC and the National Football League!

We are so screwed

My Prediction is another Packers/Patriots game but though as Fenris said Farve deserves it...I doubt the Packers can beat New England...though they should put up a damn good fight...it might even come down to the last few points...but ultimatly I feel the Pats will be victorious

Well, fortunately for us, we're just typing it. =P

As for the Super Bowl? I think it'll be Packers-Pats, which is highly amusing because two cold-weather teams will be playing in Arizona. Victory will go to the Pats, but barely, in my opinion. Just 'cause I think the Pats will win, however, doesn't mean I'll be rootin' for 'em. Of the teams left, I want the Packers to win. It's just too bad that Favre has already said he's comin' back next year, I think he should go out after this season personally.

Mirai Gen 01-17-2008 03:31 PM

Packers and Patriots. I want the Packers to take it to them but the chances are slipping down the drain.

Demetrius 01-18-2008 09:31 AM

Giants, Pats... And Strahan gets to give Tom Brady at least 2 concussions.

Bob The Mercenary 01-20-2008 10:17 PM

FUCK YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

I was on the verge of a heart attack the whole time.

Hatake Kakashi 01-21-2008 03:22 AM

Booya! Pats are going to the Superbowl, with the Giants going along. I'm happy to see this matchup coming, and I know I'm gonna piss off a lot of people when I say I hope the Patriots go all the way this year. Undefeated. Superbowl. Champions. Hell yeah.

As for Brett Favre? $^*@%! Brett Favre! Dan Marino would be someone who'd "earned it" (and still never got it). Hasselbeck would be someone who "earned it" (and got robbed by Steeler fans dressed in Ref's Uniforms). BF needs to hang it up already. Don't get me wrong, he's a good quarterback... I'd even say he's among the best... but I get tired of looking at the guy year after year, decade after decade. I think if he had his way, he'd be playing from his geriatric wheelchair at age 80, when all blitzes against him would be penalized for unnecessary roughness. He's had his 15 minutes of fame, and then some. It's time to let someone else have a crack at the helm.

Demetrius 01-21-2008 12:34 PM

GIANTS!!!

You have no clue what it would mean to me for my boys to be the ones to end the Pat's year with a defeat at the Superbowl. In all likelihood I will end the day sad, but screw it, for now I have hope!

Bob The Mercenary 01-21-2008 09:21 PM

Demetrius, did you listen to Mike and the Mad Dog today, assuming you know who they are? There's already a 13 1/2 point spread on the game. If I were a betting man I'd take the points. Their last game together could have easily gone either way.

Also, Giants jersey now $70. Jets jersey $20. :(

Sky Warrior Bob 01-22-2008 12:54 PM

I don't know how thick it will be, or how it will play out, but apparently Fox News will be interjecting itself into the Super Bowl.

I just hope its at least limited to the pre-game & post-game coverage. If they interrupt game coverage, I can't see that going over too well.

I know they're trying to copy Olbermann, but he's got talent in sportscasting, and when he's doing Football, that's all he does. He isn't bringing in politics into it.

All I can say is ugh...

Raiden 01-22-2008 04:46 PM

Just something to say before I return to the shadows.

THE PACKERS WILL RETURN TO TAKE VICTORY NEXT YEAR.

Flarecobra 01-23-2008 07:17 PM

Well, apperentally Tom Brady injured himself agesnt the Chargers....High Ankle Sprain.

Demetrius 01-23-2008 09:10 PM

Heheh, that just makes the hits he'll take from Strahan all the sweeter :D

Bob The Mercenary 01-23-2008 09:50 PM

Just got my Sports Illustrated today. They're calling the Giants to win the Superbowl 24-20. I'm reading through trying to figure his reasoning, but it seems to consist entirely of intangibles.

Demetrius 01-23-2008 11:43 PM

NOOOO! They are pulling the curse on the Giants! Those bastards!

I do know who Mike and Mad Dog are, but rarely listen due to my odd hours and lack of the AM signal that carries them up here.

Raiden 01-29-2008 02:03 AM

It'll be hard watching the Super Bowl this year.

I want both of these teams to lose. I don't really like either. So if I watch the game, I'm guaranteed the chance to watch of one of the teams I dislike lose the Super Bowl.

But then...one of them get to win.

So conflicted.

Kaifung 01-31-2008 03:25 AM

Just because the Patriots cheated in the Jets game (recording playcalling and such) I hope Giants win. Plus I have a instinctive dislike of anything perfect.

Which is something which all the teams do, the only difference is the bringing in of a video recorder. Something other teams have done as well.

The Jets caught the Patriots only because the coach of the Jets used to work with the Patriots head coach.

Thing is, from my point of view, that whole scandal is the reason for the Patriots perfect season. After that, they had to prove to everyone else that it wasn't the cheating that had got them there.

Besides, lets just say you can call each others plays 100%. You still have to match your own side up against that. Plus, when has any team followed plays 100%? These people have brains, they know when to dodge & weave.

To me, it made it look like they just got sneakier with the cheating.

Since none of the teams that I like made it to the Super Bowl, I can't say that I'll bother watching it. Besides, I'll be working at the store.

I will say that if the Patriots do win, I'll be annoyed. Tom Brady irritates me.

Demetrius 02-02-2008 09:17 PM

Catching signals is one thing, employing lip readers and video taping other coach's calls is something else entirely. Hell, the NFL even destroyed the evidence and is getting called for it by Congress.

Bob The Mercenary 02-02-2008 10:29 PM

Either way, it wouldn't have mattered much if they didn't cheat, what with the Jets sucking and all. I'm a Jets fan and didn't care much at all about the whole "spygate" controversy. Spy on us all you want, all you'll see (or record) are "draw play, draw play, screen pass, punt, draw play..."

shiney 02-03-2008 10:16 PM

BAAA HA HA HA HA SUCK IT TOM BRADY

Mesden 02-03-2008 10:17 PM

Now, I am not a major football fan, nor do I know all the intricacies, but goddamn that was a good game. Eli Manning was amazing.

NYG deserved that.

Orion Pulse 02-03-2008 10:22 PM

best superbowl in years. holy balls. 4th Quarter was non-stop awesome.

Mesden 02-03-2008 10:25 PM

He broke three people and threw a perfect pass.

Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the league, Manning was the best quarterback in the superbowl.

Bob The Mercenary 02-03-2008 10:27 PM

Undefeated WHAT?!

After that entire opening sequence. The whole epic "perfection" thing. Most amazing Superbowl ever. How the hell did he catch that last one, with his helmet?

I'm pretty sure I heard this entire culdesac erupt at the end.

[Edit] Holy shit Times Square is tripping BALLS!

Cloud Strife 02-03-2008 10:30 PM

Go Giants, Go Giants! You wo-on, you wo-on!

'Course, I almost always root for the NFC team...

Anyway, that makes two Manning Super Bowl victories in a row! New Dynasty? =O

batgirl 02-03-2008 10:31 PM

My entire street went nuts. That amazing helmet catch and the knee catch made the game for me. The Patriots now have that "season that could have been" hanging over them for a few years at least.

Both teams played a great game, props to both of them for tight defense and explosive offense. In the end, I'm a happy New Yorker.

Igbutton 02-03-2008 10:33 PM

The bad impressions first.

The commercials sucked this year.

And now the good.

It was an excellent game. I didn't have any preference for a winner and it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Red Fighter 1073 02-03-2008 10:42 PM

Really? Yeah, the commercials sucked this year except for the one with the screaming squirrel as the car was about to run it over.

As for the game, I'm a Pats fans so this really sucked. Honestly, I really felt like they didn't a good game at all. Through the entire game, it felt the Giants were just constantly owning everything yet the Pats were able to hold on until the 4th quarter. Brady just didn't seem to have it today. Besides that, it just seemed really boring. I'm much more of a fan of high scoring games and neither team was really able to pull through that often. Just really disappointing overall.

EDIT: Though yeah, the 4th quarter was unbelievable. It almost made me forget how incredibly boring the first 3 quarters were.

King_black_mage 02-03-2008 10:44 PM

I just picked a team and cheered them on, which so happened to be the giants. I would be cheering for the St.Louis rams but they didn't make it to the superbowel this year. =(

adamark 02-03-2008 10:49 PM

SON OF A ***** ************ ****

Ah!!! You can tell I am a patriots fan because I'm swearing!!! RAR

OK the fourth quarter pissed me off so many times. I saw my guys expertly move down the field and score, and then they freakin' giants fumbled their whole way back and stupidly got SO MANY lucky breaks. They actually measured the ball twice when the giants had it. RIDICULOUS!

What a ridiculous game.

Yeah, and the giants came up short on third! What did they do?

Run it right the hell over!

Nyahahaha!

I repeat my previous post.

Funka Genocide 02-04-2008 12:04 AM

I loved how they made those impromptu montages of Tom Brady getting beat the fuck down over and over again. Man, that was priceless.

And Eli's got some moxie in 'im, that was a great last minute effort to win. I'm not even a New York fan, but I felt good on the inside.

PraetorZorak 02-04-2008 12:15 AM

How Manning eluded that sack is beyond me, only to lob a perfect ball to Dave Tyree, who made a ridiculously amazing, nay, spectacular catch trapping the ball between his hand and helmet until he could get another hand on it all while being harrased by Patriots defenders.

Great googly moogly.

Mesden 02-04-2008 12:42 AM

The difference between Brady and Manning that game is that Manning was actually moving, whereas Brady stood still for as long as he could before throwing the ball, maybe scuffling a little to get a better angle.

P-Sleazy 02-04-2008 12:55 AM

My friend was sooooo pissed off when the Giants scored that last touchdown. I kept knocking on him the entire game saying giants were gonna win and kept up with his whole "but thier losing" thing. It was great!

I forget the name, but what the fuck was with that whole "Manning throwing the ball to #17." That guy seriously missed every goddamn catch that entire game. Figure you'd learn your lesson or something.

But yeah, great game. I totally didn't know that Giants were going to win, but hell yes that was a great game. I'm torn between excitement for the underdog and sympathy for the Patriot's messed up perfect season.

It was obviously to make the game winning catch much more radical.

I completely agree. Sadly, I had to WORK through the Super Bowl tonight, so I didn't get to see a bit of it. However, I did listen to the last bit of it on the radio. Irate is a completely inadequate word to describe me during that last Giants drive. The Patriots had a legacy... they were THISCLOSE to setting a history-making perfect season, to having that trophy, to be considered the absolute best team of our generation....

And they BLEW it! Now, instead of making history, they're but another footnote.

Mike McC 02-04-2008 08:24 AM

I'm reminded of a saying. "Cheaters never prosper."

But seriously, Yay for the Giants. Even though I only saw the 4th quarter, what a quarter. This is payback for what they did to the Rams in 2002. Bastards.

PyrosNine 02-04-2008 08:35 AM

Hey, I didn't even watch the game, and I made 12 bucks! Yay Giants!

Demetrius 02-04-2008 09:09 AM

I'm now reading this while still only slightly drunk, and I need to ask you all something...

Not an exciting game?! Are you kidding me?

This game was packed full of sacks, hard runs, and Tom Brady eating turf almost 25% of the time he touched the ball. It wasn't a blow out, each team was playing well the whole game through. I'm of the opinion that the game was a good match up, and the better team won.

And how. I mean, had that just taken that field goal, instead of trying to run it, they've have won the thing. But either egos, or a lapse in common sense, made them think they could score a few more points by running it.

That's bull. All the teams watch each other to see if they can pick up each other's plays, Patriots did cross the line in video recording it. However, they were punished for it. 10-1 odds that since the Patriots lost, the Senate will drop the investigation...

Which was a sham, in my opinion. The only rules that were broken were NFL rules, and the NFL dealt with it internally. Why the Senate got involved was merely to placete the consituents.

Wyndon 02-04-2008 12:46 PM

All in all, a great game. I pity Tom Brady, cuz he really is the best QB in the league right now, but Manning played way better this time around. Furthermore, that stupid pussy ass challenge by Bill on that 12-player on field thing was such a pussy call, that at that point, I wanted to fucking SINK the patriots.

Great game overall, I still feel kinda bad about the pats, they are for sure the best team of this generation, but Giants really took this one home. It's good to be a New Jersey-an (even if half the people here are eagles fans, and thus hate the giants...lol).

That one play by manning where he broke 3 tackles, avoided a sack, to throw a PERFECT throw was unbelieveable. I actually dropped my beer in surprise, shock, and excitement! :( Beer...

Raiden 02-04-2008 01:29 PM

I got $20 off this game. Just thought you'd all like to know.

I was running security in my dorm last night during the game, and I of course had the lobby TV on to watch. It was a great game, I was watching in my security desk seat, and suddenly...out of nowhere...

The helmet catch.

Have you ever felt a dorm called The Towers shake from hundreds of students stomping and yelling? Yeah. That shit was crazy.

For the first 3 quarters, the game was constantly tied at 7-3 and neither offense could really get anything going at all to score points. Sure, sacks are great, but I would much rather see great passing/running drives up the field for touchdowns rather than a few good tackles. Also, most of those defensive plays mostly led to Brady throwing a very rushed pass. Not that exciting..

Also, the Pats actually had a really bad game. Tom Brady is basically the star of that team with the other players making notable plays, but if he can't make plays then the team doesn't do well and it definetely showed. He was constantly under pressure as the O-Line just couldn't hold off the defense (Starting Right Guard was injured). Brady couldn't make good passes because of the pressure. The running game was off and nothing special, and the defense just seemed to slightly hold off the Giants from scoring. The Giants' 3rd down conversion was really good. I don't want to say "What if", but honestly if the Pats offense were actually able to get anything going for points, then it would've been a much different game.

Also, I will admit the Giants definetely played a much better game than the Pats during the Superbowl, but they in no way are a better team. When the Pats are playing their "A game" then they're almost unstoppable like they've been in the past games of the season. They weren't 18-0 because of 18 flukes. Like I said, Brady just couldn't get the ball to his receivers for big yardage, the offense couldn't get rolling, and the defense just barely kept it close. The Pats really didn't play their best game during the Superbowl, but the Giants did.

EDIT: Except for the second half of the 4th quarter, not many notable plays happened at all. Pretty much all of the real excitement came from the those last six minutes. The rest of the game was just back and forth with nothing really happening.

Did you even see Brady that game? I mean seriously, he was like a statue waiting for his guys to get open while the entire O-Line shrank in on him, and then he got pissed when they blocked his passes!

Compare him to Eli who was a snake that entire game that threw some awesome passes.

The difference in this game was that, while Tom Brady is the best QB in the league, Eli was the best QB in the superbowl.

Suck it Brady!

I hope this humbles him a bit.

Moogle0119 02-04-2008 03:49 PM

Ugh, what a horrible day to have bet on the Patriots. I got to wear some silly Giants crap around the office for the rest of the week now. I'll admit it was a good game, but yeah the Patriots offense definitely did not do as well as they had done during the regular season. Dang, what a loss...

Part of his punishment for being named Tiki.

Bob The Mercenary 02-04-2008 07:05 PM

I'll admit it, I'm a lifetime Jets fan. But when a bandwagon like this stops in front of me, I call shotgun. Seriously, I was the only one in a green jersey in a room of blue. I listened to the New York sports station I frequent today and one of the hosts said something that hit me.

He mentioned that around 50% of the people showing up at Modell's stores today are frauds, as in, not true fans. And I have to agree, I was on the brink of going out myself and grabbing a jersey or championship shirt. But, it didn't feel right. The man went on to say that the feeling you get from being a lifelong fan and finally grabbing the moment is completely different than just jumping on the wagon. This kind of derails my idea of going into the city tomorrow for the parade, I'd feel like a complete hypocrite. Guess I'll just wait the decades out for a Jets superbowl...*cries*

Now that I've composed myself I can actually comment on the game. The Patriots averaged around 30 points a game, almost 600 total, for the season and the Giants held them to 14. I find that both remarkable and suspicious. The Pats had just not been playing their best for the entire postseason. I'm still frustrated at the coach for just walking off the field with 1 second left and declining to comment for more than two words afterword. Brady and Moss at least gave classy interviews.

You should have heard all the radio personalities apologizing for their portrayal of Manning today. I'm so happy him and Coughlin have finally been rectified.

Finally, another host said something else that got me thinking. He asked "what are we doing really? Reporting on something pointless in the big scheme of things?" I thought, well maybe. But, you could also consider life itself pointless. It's the dedication people place in something that gives it worth.

Also, 18 and 0wned!

Well, you could always go to it, as a way of saying "Hey, congratulations." to the team. You don't have to support the team, but you can respect them. Like me, I'm a Dolphins fan, and I lived in San Diego, which was home to the Chargers. I don't own a piece of memerbilia from them, outside a small poster that I got from one of the players when I worked as crowd control in a game, but I read up on them, and respect the team.

I'd think Florida fans would be happy, too, as they still have the undisputed best team ever now.
