Pronunciation in Video Games 2: The Legend of Curly's Gold
This is a continuation of the 'pronunciation in video games' thread
Here's one I've been kicking around awhile. Magus. In the second .hack game there was a boss called Magus and they pronounced it 'May-gus' like the word 'mega', Where as I've been saying it like you say 'magic'. I think I'll stick to the normal way |
I say it like magic.

ma·gus ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ma-ges) [that woudl be a long a and solid g sound (or they'd have used j instead of g there). MA-guess to show you the pronunciation right like]
n. pl. ma·gi (mj) A member of the Zoroastrian priestly caste of the Medes and Persians. Magus In the New Testament, one of the wise men from the East, traditionally held to be three, who traveled to Bethlehem to pay homage to the infant Jesus. A sorcerer; a magician. It's a real word, so there shouldn't be any doubt to it's pronounciation. |
Yeah. Like Krylo said.
I'd just say that it sounds like Maggot and Gus. If you had a cartoon character named Gus the maggot, or Maggot Gus. You could shorten his name to Magus, and you'd already know how it's pronounced. |
I've been learning Japanese and reading Final Fantasy 9 doujinshi. As a result, I've gotten used to recognizing the characters by their original names. and I've started pronouncing them that way. So:
Vivi - vee-vee, both syllables equally stressed Quina - ku-ee-na Amarant - Salamander (he was renamed) Zidane - jee-tahn Most of the time I remember the usual American pronunciations of the names, but I can't seem to break myself of "vee-vee". Both my brother-in-law and a friend's daughter have asked me why I pronounce it that weird way. BTW, if you go to a Japanese import seller at a con and mention Vivi you'll get blank looks. Call him Bibi (bee-bee). Yes, I know that at least some of this was in the previous thread. I didn't see it until it was locked, so I couldn't add my two yen worth then. |
How do you pronounce Quistis from FF8?
|
I always pronounced Magus the wrong way. ^^;; It just sounds more natural and relaxed to say "MAh-gus" (pronounced like Magic. ^^;;)

I've always said Magus as in Maggot Gus.
Yeah, Slackbot, I established the FFIX names in the previous thread. Quistis is Kisutisu in the JP version. Although they have the capacity to make it "kui," it's not a natural sound. I think Quina was an exception because they were going for the weird factor. Like "ubiquitous" in Japanese becomes "yubikitasu." |
A bit of trivia: the Qu names are based on "kuu", a rude, dialect word for "to eat."
This has been another (THUD) Useless Fact. |
I don't know how to pronounce Bikke. ...
