Worst control scheme you've ever had to contend with
Just a question: What's the worst control scheme you've ever played with in a video game. How long did it take to make you quit?
|
Superman 64.
Yes, I played it. Before I knew it was horrible. It was like trying to control Super Dude Who Sits And Eats Chips All Day 64. I quit in like five minutes. Thankfully, it was rented. I returned it the same day. The guy asked me why on the first day, I was like, "Have you even played it?" |
I can't remember many in particular but I always had lots of problems with games on the NES and the SNES, on platformers. Jumping control is critical and I found many of them had weird, unresponsive jumps and such.
I remember Rocky for the Master System had very odd controls. You didn't have proper movement of your boxer, as in push up to move up the ring, left to go left etc. All movements were tied to the position of your opponent boxer and also to whether you were dominant in your punching or getting beaten up, such that if you wre taking a lot of punches you couldn't duck and weave out, you simply had to block and punch back. The system was so wierd. Also: Any game with the powerglove. |
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for the N64. What the fuck was up with that game? The visuals were lacking, the plot was nonexistant, and the difficulty was close to impossible.
Then we came to the controlling. Words cannot describe how awful that game's control really was. It wasn't normal spaceship controls, it wasn't inverted, spaceship controls, it wasn't even southpaw spaceship controls. You'd press one button to do one thing, and something else would happen (quickly followed by "hey, I'm on your side!"). Horrible, HORRIBLE game. It's only redeeming feature was that I got it for free, but that's like getting a bag of dog poo for free. |
I unfortunately can't remember the name of this game, because it was shit and I never played it, but I read the review of it. It was another generic Wipeout clone, but with a twist:
You'd press right to turn left, and you'd press left to turn right. Now just who the fuck thought up that brilliant idea?! |

Most reviews I'm looking at about 8-8.5/10 which is pretty good... |
I rather liked Rogue Squadron, the controls worked fine for me. Maybe you had the controller upside-down?
On topic, I would have to say any kind of platformer with weird physics (or I suppose just physics in general). I mean the ones where after landing a jump, you would keep moving forward a bit. It's especially a pain when you land on a really small platform and have to push back to keep yourself from falling, but then you over-correct and end up falling off the back end. You lose either way. |
Same here, in fact I own the entire Rogue Squadren series, was one of the main reasons I got a gamecube
Now lets see worst controls Honestly the worst controls from recent memory, I'd hate to say, is Super Mario Galaxy. Its a great game, but moving around is a real pain. |
Worst controls I've had is probably Escape to Monkey Island, there were two control methods if I remember correctly and both were as annoying as the last.

Trying to play Resident Evil on the computer. Painful.
