Going Indie For Fun
I see many people everyday around the internets that wish they could enter the Gaming world and make their own games. be a part of a team, be part of huge and fun project or simply create that ONE game you always wish to see coming to life...
Of course, the HUGE part of these people dont really know what is like to be, live and survive by making games, thus, many dont make it. Or give up along the way... Then, i see indie games. Like the one that was the inspiration for Portal and things like Fl0w and Audiosurf (that i BET will be a DL game for Xbox or Ps3 somewhere down the line) And then, well... you know, these are simple games with great concepts that only took a couple of programs to be made (Flash, Quest3d, VC++ and such) sure is hard, but it's easier than the stuff you would have to learn to make the next Final Fantasy or Gears of War... So, i would like to ask you, gamers, you guys think it's worthy? To go "indie for Fun" ? I mean, put together a small team of friends and geeks and put together these little crazy games like a "team", and do it just for the fun of it... Personally, i would love to do stuff like that... i've actually been a part of 2 teams that were trying to make a "Final Fantasy Tactics" games out os scratch... surelly it went no were both times, but the idea was nice... What about you? Would you do it? If someone asked you to Code / Draw / Make a site / Compose / Test / Write for a indie game just for fun, would you do it? |
I'd write just for fun. I would never code just for fun, cause coding is not fun, and anyone who finds it fun must love pain.

well...i have been working on a tabletop starship combat game for about six months now in my free time. it could be converted to a simple game if we had someone who could program it.

Some of the best games could have been indie; Puzzle Quest, for example. Or Contra and Mega Man. All of which are incredibly simple by nature.
|
This thought has occurred to me multiple times.... but then I realize that I don't have any of the skills required to make an Indie Game :(
|
I would, but the lack of skills and/or ideas are really a big drawback.
|
I've gone so far as to fill notebooks with the details of a finely-tuned combat system and character classes for a tactical RPG. It'll never happen, but wishing sure is nice.

A buddy of mine has a few video game ideas but nothing that could be indie.
I'm in the same boat as Vault here. All I could be useful for is like looking at something and seeing if it's neato or not and bein like "Can you do this? Would this help?" etc. I fail at being original. |

I'd go indie for fun, or to build up a portfolio as I consistently try to stick my foot in the door of 'the big boys'. |

Contra is my favorite old-school game. As such, Hell Yes to indie games. I've never heard the term before, but Hell Yes all the same. I can do sprites, writing, drawing (better than most people, not great), and am capable of coding. I'd need like a reference book or something, as I'm not good at remembering long lists of codes and stuff, but I can type fast and I understand many programming languages. I don't know the codes, but with a list of commands, etc, I can do it easily. Anyway. I want to make like a Contra-type game with my own sprites, enemies, new power-ups, swords, etc. Probably something like a combination of Contra and Ninja Gaiden for the NES. I want to use modified FF6 or FF1-3 sprites, though. I'm good with those and they are fun. I also like the look. |
