Dawn of the Dead, 2004

Remake of George Romero's classic zombie flick of the same name. I'm going to go see it over the weekend and wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on this new direction of the zombie film genre (faster, more vicious zombies). Personally, I'm willing to give it a chance as it actually adds a sense of peril to the situation (in the original, the zombies were pathetically slow and clumsy. Hell, the main characters were able push their way through crowds of zombies and not get bit. Bah). Hopefully, it'll be more suspenseful than other recent "zombie" movies like Resident Evil or 28 Days Later.

Oh, and here's a link to download the first ten minutes of the movie. Good stuff.

For some reason, I'm really looking forward to this movie. Which is odd because I'm against the whole fast zombie thing. I mean, zombies are supposed to be at the bottom of the monster heirarchy, and if they change the zombie stereotype to a quick, killing machine instead of a slow moaning mess, what creature will take the zombie's place? Werewolves? Mummies? Vampires? I think not. The zombie earned that title by starring in hundreds of movies as being slow, weak, and utterly pathetic. So, why change that now?
But yeah, movie looks cool.

I've said this before to others and i shall say it again:

ZOMBIES SHOULD NOT RUN!
ZOMBIES SHOULD NOT SCREAM!
ZOMBIES ARE NOT COORDINATED THINKING KILLING MACHINES!

ZOMBIES SHUFFLE!
ZOMBIES MOAN!
ZOMBIES ARE TOO DECREPID TO DO ANYTHING FASTER THAN A SHUFFLE NO MATTER HOW FRESH THE CORPSE!
ZOMBIE BRAINS ARE TOO ROTTED TO THINK!
ZOMBIES ARE ROTTED, STINKY, ROTTING, CORPSEBAGS AND THIS MOVIE FAILS TO PORTRAY THEM PROPERLY!

I agree. I don't think fast zombies are any improvement.. They're supposed to slowly lumber you, building up a sense of unescapable but slowly oncoming dread, rather than dart out of the shadows and eat your brain before you know what's going down. Like I say.. the original is always best.. But, I'll have to wait until I actually see the flick.. still looking forward to it. I'm a zombie movie man, myself..

Zombies also make a neat splooshing noise when a shotgun shell meets their forehead at point blank range.

Zombies scare me. Like can't sleep, must guard door with 5-iron for three nights until I calm down scare me. Lumbering or not, things jumping out of the shadows are always scary, or else haunted houses wouldn't work. Finally, the only thing worse than a zombie is a motivated zombie. I'm gonna watch this movie and have another magical sleepless week (just like after resident evil on the GC).

Twas a fine movie. Very well made and quite scary. I'm also going to jump on the "no sprinting zombies" bandwagon.

Yeah, this is probably the first fast zombie film ever, I mean where's the fun in shooting something that you probably will miss. at least when it's lumbering towards you, you can blast it's 'caps and watch it squirm.

But just once in a zombie movie, id like to see a couple of background zombies dancing like in Michael Jacksons thriller!

Vicious 03-20-2004 12:28 PM

Well, you have to consider. Reanimated dead things can only be as fast as they were when they were alive. And since 60% of America consists of overweight slobs, I think it'd be quite easy to stroll through a city and blast those bastards before they even have the chance to consider your brain to be on the level of a big mac with extra grease.

I like the fast zombies. Before they were more of an inconvienance than anything.

You're walking down the street trying to go to the mall. A hoard of zombies appear in front of you.

"Oh, zombies."

Turn down a sidestreet and walk around them.

Enjoy your shopping at the mall.

The only way the slow zombies suceeded was due to rampant human stupidity. (If someone you know is moaning "BRAAAIINNS" and missing an arm and still walking, DONT GO NEAR THEM DUMBASS). Zombies start appearing, and no one DOES ANYTHING about them. They're not that hard to stop, just shoot them with a shotgun, or hit them with a car.

Slow zombies = win by humans being too stupid to walk away from them
Fast zombies = win by running you down and viciously eating your face off.
