I'm don't think he's trying to take away the competitive aspect but rather remove all the technical aspects that separate the pros from the amateurs.

Classic Smash was very competitive in it's day without wave-dancing and L-canceling and all that jazz.

To be fair, in those days it was called Z-canceling. But it is true. Technicalities != Depth, as we've already agreed upon. Smash has always been more about the mindgames and less about how many buttons you can press before the frame window to launch a fireball disappears.

Apparently competitive is the opposite of fun. Because, you know, trying to dissect the game to the point where you're looking at where to use an exploit to give a slight advantage, it's no longer really fun.

Seriously, goddamned powergamers know how to suck the fun out of everything.

Brawl seems to have the largest soundtrack for any video game yet. Not totally sure about that, though. Still, it makes me happy. I wonder how many rearrangements of the main theme there are. I know I've heard at least four that I can think of off the top of my head.

Anyone have an image of R.O.B. Kirby yet?

Can we not have that discussion again? Like, seriously? Please? Before heads roll off?

Well, if I remember correctly, Sakurai said in one of the interviews that the disc had enough content to fill three separate games, so I would say that yes, it is the largest soundtrack ever.

What? No, seriously, what? I don't see the competitive ≠ fun equation here. Yeah, a short time ago, I was one of the casual players for Melee who really didn't get them crazy competitive players, but recently some friends of mine who brought their Gamecubes every day to school to play Melee competitively and I joined in. Needless to say, I was destroyed, but it made me wanna learn more on how to be better player. Eventually, I started learning about the techniques in Melee (still haven't gotten wavedashing down yet) and what are the best attacks for each character and when to use them and though my improvement is very slight to say the least, I am actually having fun while doing it! What I am saying is that it doesn't only have to be an items match using only your favorite character spamming the same attacks (I'm not saying all casual players do this, but I know some, including myself, do/did) to be fun.

He was being sarcastic, guys. He was making fun of one of the more common misconceptions in gamers, that being competitive and being fun are separate.

Specifically, in SSBM where the game is simple enough that there is not a readily apparent competitive aspect to it, so more casual gamers make such a distinction.

Basically, it's a debate that I've seen a few times, but mostly in terms of SSBM. So he's saying that may be a reason behind toning down the technical qualities of the game (that kind of argument/bitching).

I like the results.

Yeah, now if only they could have made it actually be Mewtwo.

It was more of a semi-mockery of the tendency of competitive play to make the game as technical vanilla as possible, when it is supposed to be this off-the-wall slapstick, crazy action game.

Ashley's Theme I have set to repeat.

I CAN'T BEAR TO PUSH STOP WHY SAKURAI YOUR MUSIC SELECTIONS ARE TOO GOOD.

Regulus Tera 02-03-2008 01:59 AM

Oh my. Oh my.

SAKURAI YOU'RE A FUCKING TEASE

I also want to share tons of matches by competitive people. You can see how they are adapting, as well as some insanely awesome strategies involving mindgaming (SNAKE AND GANON): http://www.wifiwars.com/?q=node/75
