Speculative fanfiction (or, Warning: Incoming Lame)

I don't see nuffin' about no fanfics in the rules (yet :p ) and people have been posting their poetry, so..........

This kind of burst into my head like an unexploded Hadoken. A friend told me about a scene in Final Fantasy 6, which reminded me of a movie, which brought all kinds of other associations to mind, so I put them all into a blender with the events of the current 8BT storyline, and pressed play. This is the result.

I started writing this fairly early in the Lich/BM's-Excellent-Adventure storyline, so as that story unfolds, it'll contradict.. oh, pretty much everything in my fic. But hey, its fanfic -- whether you choose to rationalize it as "Death is non-linear", "alternate universe", or the ever-popular "A wizard did it", its all in good fun. It starts roughly about the time that Fighter is rocking back and forth on his heels, moaning about his failings as a meatshield. From there it gets weird :p

I doubt very many people will be familiar with "Night on the Galactic Railroad", much less with any of the other keys I've used in this story (and there are many). "Night on the Galactic Railroad" was written in 1923 by Miyazawa Kenji. Though cited as a children's story, its about as much so as "The Little Prince" and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Its had an impact on Japanese culture; its motifs can be found as the Phantom Train in FF6, and as the inspiration for Leiji Matsumoto's "Galaxy Express 999." If you don't pick up any of the other keys and motifs I've used in the story, don't worry about it -- my beta readers have assured me that its still enjoyable.

If you enjoy the story, thank you for reading it. If you didn't enjoy it, thank you for reading it, and feel free to skip the remaining chapters.

Thank you to Brian Clevinger, for obvious reasons. Thank you to Meddros, cuz he'll be sitting there saying "Huh? What'd I do?" ;) Thank you to Slackbot, for the inspiration. Thank you to Nishiko and Melusina, for beta-reading.

great job! :D

It's like an alternate ending to the comic, very good Idea.

Ooooooooooooo, yes! Today's comic just gave me the *perfect* ending to this story :D

Yeah, I know, .txt format loses some impact due to lack of formatting. It makes up for it in being universally readable though, so oh well :p

Have some more fic. All aboard....

sounds good so far, why do I get the feeling that the merchant was Akbar!
(Suckers!)

keep it up!

That's a rather tender subject. Another slice, anyone?

Yup, eight chapters. Here's the fourth.

Fanfiction! *does a happy little dance* I'm loving it so far, though I'm not familiar with the story you mentioned at the beginning. Can't wait for the rest of the chapters!

Only half full? Here's another slice.

A note on Fighter's ritual, he is performing Setsubun, a New Year's Eve ritual of purification. Children go about the house throwing beans and shouting "Fuku wa uchi! Oni wa soto!" ("good luck in, demons out")

... well, he's sort of performing Setsubun.... ;)
