Your voice isn't bad but you really need to learn to project.

I really want to start taking lessons, unfortunately whenever I have the time I don't have the money, or vice versa. ha ha

Just practice more and look up what a diaphram is. You'll get there.

...I hear another popular approach is to feign religious faith in order to get in on some free choir-learnin' at your local house of worship.

You know, my distaste for such things (don't ban me!) is in a delicate state of equilibrium with my desire to sing. One side will win eventually, and then there shall be a reckoning.

I understand on a conceptual level breathing techniques and the methods of projecting, I've done a lot of independent study, but I don't "let loose" or what have you because I'm in a thin walled apartment, and I often neglect my breathing due to absent mindedness. Real, good singing is highly mentally intensive I believe, you have to modulate precisely all manner of physical variable at once.

See all those gay hookers you keep not wanting to move in with, I bet you those dudes have proper insulation.

Actually, I found a place where the room mate runs a radio station, and he's got a studio.

he's not gay either. not sure if that's a plus or not yet.

A good breathing exercise is to breath in for 24 beats (at about 60 beats a minute) and then breath out for 4 beats. (or alternatively, breath out for as many beats as you breath in)

24 beats might be a bit much right off the bat, so work you way up by doing smaller sets, and going up from there (1,2,4,8,12,16,24...) It really helps your lung capacity and using only 4 beats to get all that air out helps with getting that air OUT (like when you're singing)

And it's good exercise to do in the morning because all of that oxygen to the brain really wakes you up. And it helps you with air instinctively.

Hopefully that might help a little bit if you decide you want to study singing more. I haven't sung (officially) since show choir in middle school and at church, but I still remember some of the exercises (plus tying them in with band exercises, since breathing capacity is good for both)

second attempt, slight improvements may appear, no guarantees.
