Computer Won't Start?
It simply will not turn on. All connections are as they should be... I'm sure of this due to a curious noise inside the box.
It resembles a cricket chirping but would probably be more accurately labeled as something spinning but not actually connecting to anything. I'm sure whatever is making the noise is responsible... but as I'm no expert with this sort of thing I can't actually do anything. Suggestions? Before anyone asks I am posting this from my Wii. |
that sounds to me like your Power Supply cannot deliver enough energy to power the computer. It might mean the Power Supply is dying, or it might mean that you recently added a component to your Computer that pushed past it's limit.
New Power Supply should fix it. |
Yeah, I'd say power supply as well. I had to replace one on my computer about a year ago.
Question: Do you remember if your computer randomly rebooted at all in the weeks leading up to the total power failure? |
Power supplies get buggy before dying. You'd have noticed random shutdowns and clock problems and the like before this.
My guess is that the fan is what's chirping, because it's possible and normal to have it connected directly to the PS. However, your motherboard might be dead. I know this because that's what's wrong with MY desktop, and my fan works just fine, and I just replaced the power supply with no effect. |
Well, there haven't been any outstanding performance issues recently. The problem was very sudden.
|
That's most likely your motherboard. The only other thing I'd recommend is your CMOS battery. In problems like this, there's a small, very small chance, that your CMOS battery died, and that it ALSO left your BIOS chip corrupted enough to halt startup.
It's a large, flat battery, so it's easy to test. Painful, but easy. Or, if you're a bit sensitive of mouth, or it's actually dead, you can pick them up at nearly any place you could ever buy a battery. Honestly, I wouldn't bank on the battery, though. |
Have you checked to make sure that no fans are being blocked/obstructed/have things stuck in them? This can often lead to issues like that. Another possibility is that your system HD is dead/dying or your RAM is fried.
I'd check the fans first, then stick a multimeter on your power supply. If those don't do anything, pull out your system HD and listen to it when you boot up. If the noise is from there then that will explain your problem. |
I'd be surprised if it was the HDD causing the problems, as the computer should at least post. The way it's phrased it seems like he's getting nothing but fan activity; unless this is a prebuilt computer with posting disabled, a RAM error would give some indication as well.
Power or motherboard error sounds most plausible right now. |
Does the computer beep or flash anything on the keyboard? If you can give more detail this gets way easier.
|
Blue, if it was the CMOS battery, he'd still get a Beep Error for corrupted BIOS.
There is a 99% chance that it's the Power Supply dying/dead. Get a new Power Supply. They're cheap, and if I'm wrong I will personally pay you the $50 for the Power Supply. |
