Franchises that need Reboot

So, now, really, what Franchises do you belive that need a full (or partial) re-do?

Here is my Take:

Zelda: Let's give meaning to this crap. Let the sidequests give me itens. Magic spells, New Swords, new arrows, new bows, Maybe Armor for Epona. Let Ruppies be actually worthy instead of a simple "tack on". Maybe multi-part sidequests.

Let there be more Background. The gamers can handle it. More about link, more about Zelda. More about zelda's parents... let us dig in like nintendo has never let us before...

Sonic: Take a lesson from Wipeout, then fuse it with GTA. Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was fun, but it can be GREAT with current tech. Hell, Tony Hawk games have better Map design than most Sonic Games in recent story...

Megaman: STOP MAKING IT EXXXTREME!!

Need for Speed: SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY.... GAWD! I dont care about your "dark edged take on street racing" i just want a fun arcade racer with deep Customize system... i dont need the "semi-quasi-underworld-dark-evil-marginal" stories...

Isn't this exactly the same thing as the other thread? A reboot implies a "return to the beginning", after all.

I think he opened it because the other one reached the limit. Additionally, I thought of this and went: man, he's right, there needs to be a decent ReBoot game because the first one stalled the franchise before it even got started.

Bells 02-28-2008 02:23 PM

Sorta... yeah.

I was actually going to post this in "general" in order to apply to all types of Franchises, from games, to movies, to Tv shows... then, i saw that my head was more in the game departments, so i posted in here... afterall, the other was closed to post limit, but the Subject itself was still rolling...

Still, maybe we can migrate this back to general to broaden the subject?

I have decided to take this time and write a eulogy for our fallen heroes...

Our glorious valiant heroes who taught us what it truly means to play video games...

Our heroes who fought bravely to the end, at which time they were killed by the hands of their own masters, and forced to dance naked like puppets on barbed wire strings.

First on this list is Starfox.

He was on the Super Nintendo, representing the very first game in all of history that used polygons instead of sprites. Truly this breakthrough was weak at the time, but it grew to represent what the video game industry became in years to come.

At its prime, was Starfox 64. This shooting game taught many of us what the true purpose of video games was.

BUT, Nintendo turned traitorous. They decided to mainstream fox by putting him into game he didnt belong in. The First crime was Adventure, the sadly LOZ themed game that was just alien to all of his loving fans. The next was Assault, this sickly linear game was an injustice to all that we know and love. Some hope does remain that the franchise will recover and nintendo will pull their small asian heads (no offense) out of their butts and make some good games.

Next is Sonic The Hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in Sonic The Hedgehog, on the Sega. It's first game was lowly and humble, but it did improve with time. This character's saga was so great, that in the hearts and minds of many, he rivaled even mario.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 marked the first sign of its true greatness. With its game saves, choice of character, spin dashes, and various other mechanics, this was among the greatest sidescrollers of all time.

Next was Sonic and Knuckles, allowing you to choose yet another character, and combining with the others to increase gameplay even more. But then a dark new era came...

Sonic 3-D blast marked the beginning of the downfall. It was followed by terrible sins against the franchise such as Sonic Adventure Battle 2, Shadow The Hedgehog, and various other games who's names I dare not speak... errr... type. Truly, Sega has forsaken this great marvel.

Next is Kirby
Using his ability to eat things and copy them, this character became loved by millions. Starring in various games on the super nintendo, and then Kirby 64 on the 64, this character was thrown into the dark side of gaming once the gamecube came around. Only being featured in crappy side game like Kirby's Air Ride and similar disgraces.

The Legend Of Zelda
This game more than any other shows Nintendo's ability to find something good and then repackage it with a new title over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time marked this game's peak, with its meaningful sidequests and its difficult puzzles. But afterward there was the wind waker. It was just the same thing again. And then Twilight Princess. Truly, we all love these games, but why must they all be the same?

There were many others I am too tired of typing to talk about, but know that they must be mourned for as well.

As soon as I get bored again.

What's the deal with Star Fox Assault. Do you just go through the same 10 missions except on different difficulties? Because, Star Fox 64 was just as short, but it was a much better game. I mean sure, Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games, but you really only played like 7 missions until the endgame. I think I'm just confused because I don't that much about Assault.

Pip Boy 02-28-2008 03:02 PM

Star Fox 64 had 7 missions in each play, but overall it let you go through any of many more missions. I forget the number, but I recall there were around 15-17+ total levels you could play in altogether. So, while the game was short, it had a very high replay value for going through trying to get to all the different levels.

No wai, Kirby's Air Ride was an awesome racing game if not a pure Kirby game. If you want to diss the Kirby series call Squeak Squad or Kirby 64.

Besides, the next game in the series is Kirby Super Star Ultra Deluxe. I would say that's pretty much a reboot.
