SOULSTORM

I have it, but it's installing right now.
There will certainly be more to come, but I thought I would let you guys know. Feel free to ask questions, discuss the game, and let me know how jealous you guys are.

;)

Had it for about two weeks now.

It's pretty good.

I'm having it shipped out here. Can't wait for it.

It looks awful and I loved Dark Crusade.

Seriously, I can't think of one thing that looks good about Soulstorm. Not one. The Sisters of Battle would be neat, except from everything I've heard they got a mod quality implementation at best, and SoB already have at least one high quality mod out there for them. The air units look horrible and don't fit into the engine at all. The Dark Eldar are a complete blight on the entire franchise and I think less of the game for having them included.

The campaign mode is exactly the same as Dark Crusade, except with multiple, smaller planets and it even lacks the witty, interesting banter Dark Crusade gave you when two heroes clashed.

The sisters are basically Necrons with a lot of abilities, thats the best I cant describe them as.

Dark eldar are ridiculously broken against races like chaos, tau, and necron.
If you are facing them with marines get ready to clean the crap off your boots. Oh, and they aren't as squishy as they were made out to be, most of their early units are powerful melee that can go infiltrated way too soon in the game.

The tau air unit, the baracuda, is the most awesomely broken thing in the game. Seriously, its like having 5 flying baneblades at your disposal. Stingwings are no longer instant, which destroys any chance of quickly getting a detector. The kroot can be summoned from the barracks now, which is really awesome.

I've played about three games online, and 6 turns on the single player. I like it, I think its better than dark crusade. One complaint, however, is the the new Narrator guy. He is awful.

To be honest I prefer the Campaign in Soulstorm to Dark Crusade. Dark Crusade was pretty much a speed run to get all your honor guard and Special abilities while praying you're multiple defensive bases could hold against The AI Honorguard hordes. Soulstorm actually made we consider attacking the enemy base and eliminating them earlier on rather than leaving them there in order to spend another turn farming for those rush units.

It's far from flawless, The Campaign was rushed storywise and the SOB and Dark Eldar have a game breaking bug and broken ability respectively and Relic is still using Gamespy but other than that multi is balanced enough (something we haven't seen in a long while) Thus far I think Soulstorm is on par with Dark Crusades launch if not better.

Why is this? The only real difference I've heard about the campaign is that you no longer have persistent basis so you have to re-fight all the maps exactly the same every time the AI attacks a province.

Frostatine 03-18-2008 05:15 PM

There are a lot of cool abilities for the planets, and you now have to worry about your supply lines. This means that you need an open supply line to get all your requisition and such.

Also, there are relatively few points on any planet that it can be attacked, so conquering an entire planet makes your job a lot easier, that is unless your opponent has...

Webway gates, these are scattered about and make things complicated. Sure, you may have an entire world blocked off, but there is a certain web gate that will let you teleport between any of them and basically rape your face if you're not careful. I take my time on the campaign and secure and reinforce all my bases to the maxbefore making my move.

But that's because I feel like a failure when the computer beats me.

That's got to take forever, Frost. It seems like in general the overworld requisition costs on a lot of things went up since DC, so maxing out even one province would take quite a few turns.

Question: How are the air units ingame, and what would you reccomend for anti-air units?
