Weapons
In case anyone hasn't noticed yet, I love weapons. From swords to guns to gunswords and everything in-between and derived there-from. Over the years gaming has offered up all sorts of weapons, which either stab, smash, detonate, maim or generally just annihilate our enemies. But this got me wondering what the best weapons were, and what everyone else favourites are. So, my top 3 instuments o'death:
1) The Gravity gun (Half life 2); If weapons are defined by their ammunition, then the GG out-classes everything ever. With this gun, everything can be turned into a lethal projectile and be used over and over again meaning you never run out of ways to kill things. Radiators, paint cans, tables, washing machines, rusty circular saw blades, control panels, energy orbs, explosive barrels and for a short while, even enemy troops. You can even use it to throw enemy grenades or explosive flechettes back at them. The Gravity gun is the greatest projectile launcher ever concieved and without doubt the most fun to use. I want one. 2) The Blades of Chaos (God of War); The closest we've ever gotten to gaming sword chucks, the BoCs are the coolest set of blades to ever grace videogaming. Who would've thought that 2 smalls words on chains could have so much potential (except Fighter, of course)? You can attack in 360 degrees, at long range, or just ram them straight through someones neck up close. They even come in handy for impaling giant sea monsters on a ships mast. The possibilities for the Blades are almost as endless as the GG, which earns them 2nd place on my list. 3) The Morph Gun (Jak series); One gun, which is actually 4 guns. With the press of a button it becomes, a shotgun, a long range rapid fire rifle, a minigun and an energy rocket launcher. Jak 3 takes this even further, by adding 2 further mods to each basic form giving you 12 radically different ways to attack in an instant, including grenade launcher, electric gun, floating auto-turret launcher, homing machine gun, ricochet shots, anti-gravity affector, shockwave generator and a mini nuke launcher. All this in 1 package? Bargain! There are probably a ton of others I could add to this list, but these 3 are the ones that really stand out for me. So, what're everyone elses favourite weapons from gaming history? |
1) The Chrono Rifle (CnC: Red Alert 2): This powerful weapon left no blood, no marks, nothing to trace it with, and nothing of the victim. Simply put, given enough time, the Chrono Rifle could utterly erase anything from existance
2) Pimpcane Shotgun (Saints Row): It is exactly as described: A pimp cane with a built-in shotgun. No more or less useful than a regular shotgun, but come on. 3) Plasma Grenade (Halo): Do we really need to explain this one? |
Portal-Gun(or the ASHPD):Ok its not a death dealing super gun but COME ON it has a practical use
Plasma pistol: while anybody can kill with a shotgun or a sniper in Halo 3 The plasma pistol is what really shows how adaptive you are. Basically what i'm saying is No noob can really use the plasma pistol. Harpoon Gun (crackdown): nothing says pimp-car like one with deadbodys pinned to it also if modded guns are alowed Haxxer: a gun i made myself in UT2004. It could not only kill. IT did neg-damagetm with the altfire allowing me not only heal but SUPERCARGE my teammates The Big 1: a 100 caliber sniper rifle that could shoot through walls and tanks Exploding in the process (note this one im currently making) |
The Gluon Gun from Half-Life. Because it is the proton pack from Ghostbusters.
Pretty much all of Joachim's weapons in Shadow Hearts: Covenant. He pretty much picks up completely random stuff (accompanied with a rather funny cutscene), and uses it as a bludgeon. I mean, stuff like a huge clay pipe, a folding table, a giant frozen tuna... The same goes for Frank's weapons in Shadow Hearts: From the New World. Again, random stuff, funny cutscene, only he attatches a hilt and makes it into a sword. Cactus Saber, Bus-stop saber.... Phantom Brave, for being able to use practically anything on the battlefield as a weapon. My personal favorite is the trolly, because with a well-leveled trolly you become a fucking speed machine that just rapes everything. Pokemon, for using adorable little animals as MACHINES OF PAIN. Really, it's a rather thinly disguised cock fighting simulator. Kuribo's Shoe, which is the ultimate Mario power-up. |
Chrono Rifle and Portal Gun i wholeheartedly second.
The Shock Rifle from Unreal Tournament is pretty cool, while the Redeemer has always held a special place in my heart. the Chainsaw and the shower head from Dead Rising were always crowd pleasers (roomate adds: scythe). Brute Shot from Halo. Insect Swarm plasmid from Bioshock. i dono the name of it exactly, but in R-Type Delta there was a ship with a big honkin anchor instead of a gunpod, that you could fire into things and it would fuck them up. that was pretty awesome. |
1: The Spread Gun. 300% the onscreen bullets, 300% the overall fun.
2: The Knife. Always a favorite of mine, particularly in RE4 and more recently CoD4. 3: Ebony and Ivory. Thematically, the only pair of dual-wielded pistols I ever thought of as cool. Everyone who is not Dante and dual-wields pistols makes me scoff. I don't know what the difference is, but I do know I feel it. 4: The Backdrop. One that doesn't leap to mind immediately for most, this is easily my favorite Kirby ability of all time. German suplex FTW. 5: The Alucard Sword, from SoTN. Sure, the Vorpal piled up damage faster, but the Alucard Sword just looked so damn cool. Plus, it was Alucard's sword. Like, HIS. |

Also, on that subject, Alastor. I don't know why but it's one of the few Devil May Cry Devil Arms that always stuck out as "Dante's trademark," even though they replaced Force Edge with Rebellion starting with The Game We Shall Not Speak Of. Fuenken: Sol Badguy's kickass sword. "GRADNDU VIYPAH!" The Heavy Bolter, followed closely by the Shiruken Cannon: Staple of the Warhammer 40k series. Your trusty sidearm. |
Nothing beats a R.Y.N.O. (Rip You a New One) of the Ratchet & Clank series. Admittedly, it makes the game way too easy to beat with one, but they're always fun to nab.

Am I the only who liked the Atma Weapon (FF6)?
Or chicken knife(FF5) for that matter. |
I'm reminded of the automatic rocket launcher from Jet Force Gemini. That was fun.
Also all shotguns, they're just so great. I've never seen one that wasn't fun. |
