The Nazi Party Wasn't Very Nice
I want to vent. I've just been talking to someone who compared the efforts of a GM team in some game he played was comparable to a Jewish man arguing with Nazis. I told him that that was a horrible reference, due to what the Nazis did to.... well, pretty much anyone who wasn't a Nazi. However, he told me that because I wasn't Jewish, I shouldn't be offended.
...What?!? I don't know how many people seem to know this, but the Nazi Party did more than bully the Jewish people. Since the Nazi's believed the Germans to be the superior race, and since Hitler wanted to keep German bloodlines pure, he provided involuntary euthanasia for the disabled, and sterilization for the mentally challenged. Jews, Homosexuals, Non-Catholics, Prisoners of War - these people were sent to death camps. Did you know that Nazi scientists experimented on all sorts of people? Like twins! It didn't matter how old you were; the Nazi's were curious. They experimented on more than 1500 sets of twins. Less than 200 sets survived. Practices included injecting them with chemicals to study genetics, putting chemicals into their eyes to see whether or not they would change color, or sewing twins together to see if they could create conjoined twins. They also tried freezing people. In order to study hypothermia, they put their prisoners naked, in a tank of ice water for a few hours. Or in a freezer, and studied the best ways to warm survivors. They also brought people into contact with Mustard Gas, Malaria... In order to test the effects of certain substances, the Nazi scientists would infect someone with the disease and study them. There were attempts to make sea water drinkable. A group of gypsies were fed nothing but salt water, and became so dehydrated that they began to lick freshly mopped floors for hydration. So no - even though I'm not Jewish, I've never met a Nazi or a Death Camp survivor, I feel horrified at what was done by the Nazi's. |
I'm not sure how productive this thread is going ot be but I'll just say, sure the Nazis were bad but the allies were also not great. To fund large parts of the war, the colonies were worked to breaking point and starvation similar to Nazi work camps and rebellions were cracked down on very very hard, including mass executions.
And as someone who has studied the parameters of Nazi science a lot of there thought and experiments were based on a quite substantial undercurrent of thought at the time. It wasn't a majority opinion among scientists but it was not based in quackery either. And proper ethics committees for experimenting on people and animals weren't developed until the late 50s, meaning terrible experiments carried on for quite a while in allied countries after the war. I mean yeah the Nazis weren't great but most people weren't much better. And if anyone has a right to complain about the Nazis it would have to be the Russians. |
Isnt it the reverse? Im pretty sure the Russians BITCHPWNT the Nazis.
Point is they were assholes though. I mean, I hate a lot of people, and I mean A LOT, but I dont go all genocide-y on their asses. |

To be fair, it's Godwin's Law.
If you want something to be bad, just compare it to Hitler or the Nazis. It's trite and stupid and pointless and ignorant. You really don't need to pay attention to these sort of people. EDIT: Thank you RT, I almost forgot to pull a Seil on Seil. http://questionablecontent.net/comics/1020.png |
There's no doubt that there have been leaders who have comitted atrocities far greater than Hitler. The difference stands in that Nazism is almost universally regarded as one of the biggest evilest movements to have ever appeared in this world, while other people (say, Lenin's communist regime or Castro's Cuban dictatorship) have had far more supporters to their side of things and are more recent than Genghis Khan or the Spanish Inquisition.

The point of Godwin's Law is that in any given conversation, the longer it goes on, the more likely the chance of something being compared to Nazis or Hitler.
Nothin' to do with evil. |
