So I just dislocated my jaw...

While I was eating some steak my jaw seems to have popped out of socket on the right side.

Pressing on it hurts, making chewing motions hurts--in fact, moving or touching it at all hurts in much the same way that a toothache hurts: stabbing pain that goes up into the eye.

Anyone know how I can fix it?

Uh.

Is it actually back in place?

I really recommend going to the doctor, it's hard to fix dislocated jaws over the Internet.

You should probably go see the doctor anyway. Like, now. You probably want to have that looked at as soon as you possibly can.

EDIT: To expand on that, my granddad popped his arm out of his socket back when he was a soldier during the Korean War. He can barely lift his arm over his head without it popping out.

RickZarber 03-26-2008 08:49 PM

Well, I've got ice on it, and I'm waiting a bit to see if it won't go back in place on its own. If not I'll definitely be going to the doctor's tomorrow to get it manually relocated. >.<

I was just wondering if anyone else here had ever done that and if they knew an easy fix.

Mr.Bookworm 03-26-2008 08:52 PM

Well, my granddad told me you can shove it back in place.

Although it apparently hurts like a bitch, and can make it worse if you don't do it right.

So I don't recommend that.

Otherwise, yeah, doctor.

So...

How the hell did you dislocate it?

Seems kinda weird that it would just pop out.

Wyndon 03-26-2008 08:55 PM

No. Go to the emergency room RIGHT NOW if you have to. If you dislocate your jaw and do NOT get it fixed, there's a STRONG chance you'll develop a) chronic popping out or b) lockjaw. Both of which are VERY painful.

Go now.

(edit) My knees both pop out of place if I step and turn at all, which is bad considering how athletically active I am. All because of a skiing accident that popped out both my knees nearly eight years ago. You don't want chronic popping out, it really slows you down. My 7 minute mile? Gotta slow it down because of my knees. Not that you run with your jaw, but considering how much you rely on your jaw (talking, eating. >.> ) You do NOT want that.

I know, right?

As far as I know, I was just eating a delicious steak dinner when all of a sudden BAM! my jaw hurts like hell and I can't chew any more. :stressed:

As for going to the doctor's... well, the only place I could go at this time of night is the emergency room. And since my life is not in danger, there's a good chance they won't be able to see me for several hours (ie, like, 1 am). So for now I think I'll call my uncle who's a doctor and see what he says. (Why I didn't think of that before I don't know...)

Anyways, to keep this a "General Discussion" type thing, what things have you, the fellow NPFer, dislocated in your lifetime? :p

My legs are of just a convenient enough size that my knees collide with all sorts of things. They now make a distinct cracking noise anytime I get up from kneeling or bending down (i.e. lifting, crouching, etc). It makes me wonder which is the better alternative by now since I'm sure neither is particularly good by now: Bending at the knees? Or at the waist?

To Rick:

Speaking as someone who has a bit of medical know-how, I'd recommend getting looked at asap. This might be tonight (Remember, no matter when you go, you're likely to be waiting), it might be tomorrow. But you do not want to pop it back in, and you want to make sure it gets fixed sooner rather than later.

Keep ice on it, don't strain it, and again, see a doctor.

RickZarber 03-26-2008 09:34 PM

Alright, so I'm goin' in tomorrow morning as soon as my doctor's open.

mauve 03-26-2008 10:23 PM

Oh man, ouch. I'm sorry to hear that!

Definitely go see your doctor about it as soon as possible. Leaving it be for too long will only make things worse.
