Goddamn Super Smash Brawl Punch Fist Melee War Mario Fist Hit (General thread vol 3)

WHAT IS THIS GAME??????
Super Smash Bros Brawl is a hugeass party fighter featuring Nintendo's icons of the past and present, plus a couple of other third party characters. It also just happens to feature a metric assload of sheer content, more so than a lot of other single player games. Seriously, Sakurai looked into the hearts and minds of the fans and put in almost everything they wanted. Currently the subject of many Godzilla-sized threads here on NPF, this is the latest one. This is for general discussion of the game. Discussion of friend codes, online matchups and tournaments should probably go to their respective threads. Will this thread have spoilers? Probably, so I'd be careful if I were you. there will be spoilers in this here OP too.

So who the hell is in this shit?
I'm glad you asked. Read on, and be amazed. The full roster contains in no particular order:
Mario
Donkey Kong
Link
Samus/ZSS
Kirby
Fox
Pikachu
Marth
Game & Watch
Luigi
Diddy Kong
Zelda/Sheik
Pit
Metaknight
Falco
Pokémon Trainer
Ike
Snake
Peach
Yoshi
Gannondorf
Ice Climbers
King DeDeDe
Wolf
Lucario
Ness
Sonic
Bowser
Wario
Toon Link
R.O.B.
Olimar
Captain Falcon
Jigglypuff
Lucas

All those characters! Amazing! All with their own unique properties to live, learn and love. No direct clones this time too! Of course, most of the cast must be unlocked, but don't worry because there's more than one way to unlock characters. There's the main single player campaign, there's vs matches, Classic mode or perhaps another obscure way to get them.

Single player campaign? In my fighting game?
Yep, Brawl has a full on single player campaign in the Subspace Emissary. Fight through several stages as the Nintendo mascot of your choice to save the world from a dark evil that threatens to engulf the world, or at least turn everybody into statues. Plot written by the guy who wrote Kingdom Hearts 2's plot! It's not even single player, since you can play through the entire thing with a buddy.

What else can I do?
Everything you could do in Melee you can do in Brawl, and there's even more shit to waste your life on! Wanna do special co-op events with a buddy? Go right ahead. Wanna try out the games the fighters come from? Sure, knock yourself out. Making stages shaped like dicks? Be my guest. Coming up with crazy special brawls? The sky's the limit! You can even change the probability of songs appearing on stages! What other fighter lets you do that?

How's the actual fighting?
It's slower than Melee's, comparable to Smash 64. Recovery is easier, advanced techniques are easier, everything is easier in Brawl. You can fight online with random people or with 3 other friends, with up to three people on one console in friend matches.

Online? Awesome!
Yep, Smash has finally officially gone online, and while it's not perfect it's more than servicable. You can play random, limited matches with anonymous strangers, but friend matches are where the action is. You can even do non-fighting modes like Home Run contest online. See a friend playing? Join in his game if there's room. Sadly you cannot directly invite people to games, but that's what AIM is for. No real chat either. Still, it's perfectly playable.

Links and shit.

Caramelldansen, Brawl style
NPF Brawl FCs.
Danjo.

So I finally got around to making another Brawl thread. GGs to Demonlink who I played with some other people today. Woop.

I discovered about a week ago that Snake's C4s take a variety of shapes, including the butterfly from Snake Eater and Iroquois Pliskin's radio communicator. The fanboy in me weeped from the emotion.

I also found it hilarious how the crowd cheers for him. Snake? Snake?! SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!

Edit: Still no Danjo, mudah? For shame.

just played brawl for the first time this past week
GODDAMMIT THEY RUINED MY CROWD BREAKERS!
you see, my favorite strategy in four player smashes was using link or ness as crowd breakers to get multiple kills. Three people scrapping, whilst I use Ness or link's ranged ablities to stay out and cause chaos. Anyway I'd get in at an oppurtune time, then use the bat (twice at the most) and break the crowd, getting a triple kill Or drop down from heaven with link's down smash, then spin to disperse the rabble. Ness now takes waaaay to long to do his smash with no charge. and link's spin sucks. It was a group thing at my school so I could'nt experiment with new characters.

Probably wouldn't have worked to well anyway, online.

I assure you, you would've been my priority target at least.

yes, but then that's the same problem as with ness's new bat, time, the idea is "fight for a little bit, hide for a little bit, shoot for a little bit, jump in with quick and strong attack as a finisher." if I have to charge, I'm already taking hits, hence, my strategy is useless. Well, it only means I need to change things up again.

The game, once again, has been changed drastically from it's previous iteration. They do that, starting with Smash 64 and going to Melee and now with Brawl. You really need to find a new way to play.

No more Bowser Fair SHFFLing and Uairs.

Apparently all the pro-style competitors are upset that the gameplay has been slowed down, so far as to say that High Gravity should be 'main' style and that Melee was better. I'm totally against it.

So, footnotes:

I'm loving the whole game. The gameplay slow has made the game itself balanced out nicely. Ganondorf sucks, unfortunately, but he's still got some power in him. Rob's spike is wonderful. Toon Link (or Wink as me and RT call him) is like a more wonderful version of Young Link - powerful, swift, and savage.

I'm losing my touch with Zelda, something about her kick has been changed irrevocably. I shall alleviate my sorrows with round after round of Sonic practice.

Sonic is a beast but he's tough to control. Flick forward once and he's on the other side of the room.

Quick questions: on the Dojo there have been snapshots of Malo, the creepy baby guy from Twilight Princess. I'm assuming he's an assist trophy, but I've yet to unlock him. Am I correct in assuming this? What the hell could he possibly do to help you? And how do you get him?

Mirai Gen 03-31-2008 12:50 AM

I fought HBBlackMage's Sonic. Won with Zelda and Ike, spanked him. Lost with Bowser and Ness, fucking christ lag sucks.

He's an assist trophy, yeah.
