The Subspace Emissary is Mary Sue fanwank for Masahiro Sakurai.

Dedede is the redeemable anti-hero.
Meta Knight is the badarse anti-hero.
Kirby is the unsuspecting hero that no one suspects.

Everything is black and white with the other characters.

And he takes some big hits to the main canon Nintendo characters. Whether you save Peach or Zelda, Mario and Link still go at it like one is the naïve hero and one is mistaken for a villain.


That's my highly sophisticated criticism of The Subspace Emissary.

Dedede is the good-guy mastermind. He pwns everyone he meets and is single-handedly responsible for saving everyone from Tabuu's first strike. I don't see Meta-Knight being built up more than any of his partners in plot, although he does get quite a bit more screen-time.

Ganondorf gets a clear-cut Eviler Than Thou moment over Bowser. He's also shown to outrank Mario's foe in Master Hand's subverted villainous hierarchy.

So I've got the whole rigamaroo and have started playing my way through SSE. The most prominent thing I've noticed? I suck with Kirby so hard.

Yeah, but remember that when Sakurai left Nintendo, he also left behind the rights to his own characters. Super Smash Bros. Brawl might be the last opportunity Sakurai ever gets to work with his old characters. With that in mind, it's a wonder he didn't make the entire story revolve around them.

...and besides, I like Kirby. ;_;

Friend codes and all that jazz to follow when I get home tomorrow (or later today). Till then I've been playing on my stepbrother's concurrently acquired Wii. Interesting thing I've noticed is what happens when you hit a computer player directly with the bumper...

Also, Snake and ROB are awesome to the max.

And there's the matter of how Mario is fighting Yoshi. I realize that this is an anything-can-happen-verse, but every other indication shows that there is at least recognition for characters in the same universe.

EDIT: Actually, wow, if they had been more clear on everything, maybe even with a narrator or some dialog the SSE would have sucked alot less.
