Nuklearpower more regulated than real forums?

I'm at a conference in Chile right now, and there was a big debate earlier about whether or not companies should withhold data.

One dude gets up and says that science work done for companies is not real science, its technical work. Of course, this was basically trolling as most of the attendees were company-employed scientists. It'd be like me coming here and writing that people who read web-comics constitute the lowest common denominator of society.

Funnily enough, my only thought was that Fifthfiend probably would have banned his ass. I don't think the people next to me knew why I was chuckling.

DISCLAIMER: I do not believe people who read web-comics constitute the lowest common denominator of society. It was an analogy, and I think web-comic readers are among the most intelligent folk on the net.

Well, you can't exactly just designate someone to shoot the guy. Maybe in China or Cuba or something, they might, but in a Western, democratic meeting with mass amounts of attendees, the most you could hope for are some glares in his general direction for a lack of civility.

Of course, being rude isn't exactly a crime. It does discredit one's argument, though.

I frequently find myself wishing real life came with a ban button.

But yeah it's always amazing how many actual for-serious grownup adults are totally incapable of acting like adults.

Well see, now we know you're lying.

That said, yeah. NPF is definately one of the most well-regulated forums I've seen... or actually, the best regulated I've seen. Probably has a lot to do with the Mod : Normal Member ratio here, which is considerably higher than on most, and the more personal approach moderators take here in doing their duties.

And so the major weakness of real life forums is revealed.

Anyway, NPF has about the best moderation out of any forum I've ever been to ever. It's realistic, consistent, and accountable. Most other forums are either hideously corrupt, or just stupid and nonsensical.

One forum I post on just started banning veteran members for weird-as-hell reasons one day. The weird part is that some of these members were people who should have been banned ages ago, and numerous current reasons to ban them existed, but the ones cited were.... weird. For example: One member (an incredibly nice guy with no conceivable ban-worthy offenses on record) said that another poster was a better person than him for sending money to another forum-member who'd been in need, because he wouldn't have done it. This was suggested to be a death threat, and he was immediately banned for it.

More like exaggerating... I read web-comics, and anybody who's ever read what I say on this forums knows that I clearly have an over inflated view of my own intelligence.

That was kind of the point I was making. Most spots on the internet are horribly regulated because people feel like they can be assholes more when nobody knows who they are, yet on NPF assholery is tolerated less than even real life circumstance. Even though sometimes it seems a bit annoying, no offense, I truly believe NPF is an excellent forum because of it. So... kudos!

Sig'd so hard.

NPF is most definitely the most well-regulated forum I have ever been to. The rules are fair, and enforced the same for pretty much everyone (Unlike some forums I have been to, where many people get special treatment. Totally unfair.) NPF is a great forum with (mostly) nice, intelligent, articulate people. Others usually either get banned or just lurk. Whee.

Professor Smarmiarty 03-31-2008 06:19 PM

He so doesn't deserve a ban mainly because he makes a valid point about the difference between company employed scientists and academic scientists (corporate scientists suck!). If you supress all but the majority view then where does that leave you?

I mean he might have had a proper argument, and the argument can and has been made. If he was being dismissive and flippant then that's ok.
