Polygamist Ranch Closed

Quote:

A polygamist compound with hundreds of children was rife with sexual abuse, child welfare officials allege in court documents, with girls spiritually married to much older men as soon as they reached puberty and boys groomed to perpetuate the cycle.

The documents released Tuesday also gave details about the hushed phone calls that

triggered the raid, by a 16-year-old girl at the West Texas ranch who said her 50-year-old husband beat and raped her. Days after raiding the compound, officials still aren't sure where the girl is.

Officials have completed removing all 416 children from the ranch and have won custody of all of them, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner told reporters in San Angelo, about 40 miles from the compound in Eldorado.

Court documents said a number of teen girls at the 1,700-acre compound were pregnant, and that all the children were removed on the grounds that they were in danger of "emotional, physical, and-or sexual abuse." Another 139 women left on their own.

"Investigators determined that there is a widespread pattern and practice of the (Yearn for Zion) Ranch in which young, minor female residents are conditioned to expect and accept sexual activity with adult men at the ranch upon being spiritually married to them," read the affidavit signed by Lynn McFadden, a Department of Family and Protective Services investigative supervisor.

McFadden said the girls were spiritually married to the men as soon as they reached puberty and were required to produce children.

Patrick Peranteau, lawyer for the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Tuesday.

An unknown number of men and women church members were at the ranch while authorities completed the search of the gleaming 80-foot-high temple, a cheese-making plant, a cement plant, a school, a doctor's office and housing units. Tela Mange, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety, said Tuesday the adults were not being held, but if they left the compound, they could not return while the search continued.

At least two FBI agents were seen entering the back entrance of the temple on Tuesday.

Spokesmen for the FBI and DPS declined to comment.

The compound was raided Thursday after the 16-year-old girl called a local family violence shelter March 29 and 30, using someone else's cell phone and speaking in hushed tones to avoid being overheard, McFadden's affidavit said.

Put this on general mostly to keep it open ot more "lighthearted" comments that may arise, and also because it's "newsflash" not really a constant discussion issue.

So... that was like... a Polygamist & Pedophile all you can eat buffet?

I still find myself marveled by that kind of crap some people can come up with

I find it odd that all the news channels are avoiding call this a cult. It has all the characteristics of one, but for whatever reason, no one has yet called this a cult. Well, it is a cult. Warren Jeffs is a cult leader. The people allowing their daughters to be forced into sexual relations with him and other cult leaders after sham "marriages" while living on an isolated compound where they totally submit to Jeff and his "teachings" are definitely misguided and being harmed by all of this. Everyone probably gave up all their possessions to Jeffs or his "church" when moving into the compound, he probably had total control over them, etc. It reminds me of David Koresh except maybe Jeffs doesn't consider himself a real messiah or something, and their intentions were sexual abuse instead of violence. The amount of control he exhibits over these people make him seem incredibly similar, however.

If it looks like a cult, sounds like a cult, and smells like a cult. It's probably a cult.
Seriously tho, you never hear about this sort of shit happening in Canada. I say everyone who isn't crazy should all move up here. Bring your money, technology, and idea's with you.
Remember, no crazy people allowed.

That is some fucked up shit yo. Bitch be trippin' madness.

There will always be people who are willing to take advantage of other people for their own ends (in all kinds of different ways and on different scales). What concerns me more are the people who go along with it. I mean, why the fuck do they do that?

Of course one could come up with a lot of good reasons. But still I ask, why? Have they no common sense?

You currency is called a Loonie.... So, are you kidding me?

Also, i may be borderlining here with Forum issues... but i think that they arent calling this a cult becayse cults tend to be more religious at some level or have spiritual reasoning behind their acts. and this is more of a twisted moral view of things...

i might be wrong, but they arent a cult if they dont operate behind a dogma, right?

eithe way... they are abusive pedophiles, i dont care about other labels, im just glad they're gone

I'd say it's a cult because of the mentality i.e. forced conformity, belief, and perpetuating the cycles of such. A cult doesn't need a scripture per se.

I believe there was actually a similar thing going on in British Columbia. It was brought up in my law class because apparently there was some ambiguity around the legality of investigating them. Unfortunately I can't remember much more than that (learned of it a few years ago >_>).

Canada isn't as drenched in media as the US is, so it's likely that Canadians just don't hear about these things as often. </tangent>

As for the article: Very disturbing. O_O

Why do cult leaders always have to have their communes on ranches? It's just too-old school.

Someday I too will have a cult, but I will not have a ranch.

I will be different.

I will have a theme park.

Charle-World will have rollercoasters and hotdogs.

*raises his hands to his shoulder*

You must be this high to ride the Charlemagne ^^

Our currency is only called a Loonie to insure that we look crazier than all the crazy people out there, who might think of immigrating to Canada. Think of it as our Moat. I assure you that our Loonie is teh awesome, and our Toonie is teh 1337!

Apparently, this cult has some lawyers who think that the raid violated the rights of the sect members.

I'm sorry, but when you start violating the rights of innocent, impressionable children, the only rights you should have are your Miranda rights.
