Sony shows the first PSP game.
As the title states just recently at the Game Developer's Conference Sony showed a video of PSP game Death Jr. It's obviously a very early effort, but it's not a bad look at what the system should be capable of. The whole article is here.

The article also talks about the wireless support (I guess that means it's in for sure) and connectivity both to the PS2 (for gaming) and the PC (transferring music and the like). All in all it looks interesting. The screens and video are pretty rough, but I think it's safe to say the PSP outperforms the PS1 by a good bit. Looks pretty strong for a handheld, that's for sure. |

But you gotta give these guys some credit for not making some Crash bandicoot knock off or even worse, tomb raider. It's an original game at least. |
They said that, polygon for polygon, the PSP has more power than the PS2. It takes a lot less processor power to render polygons on a relatively low-res LCD screen than it would on a higher-resolution TV screen.
Still, it looks pretty impressive. |
im still worried about load times and skipping dangers, but yeah, thats a pretty good looking game for a portable.

hm
Load times, may just be a given with the PS
Skipping problems...? What kind of broke-ass CD player are YOU listening to? All joking aside though, we have "anti-skip" technology. If sony has overlooked using a feature like this in the PSP, then I may loose ALL faith in them, and could conivably buy an 'X-Box 2' instead of the 'PS3'. It's merely a matter of the laser's position to the part of the disc its trying to read, isn't it? They can manage that, I'm sure. Just keep the disc locked in a tighter area? meh. There's someway to keep it from skipping. I'm seeing a possibility that they could develop NEAR-PS2 quality games (enough so that you could plug the PSP into your TV to view play games with little or no graphical drawbacks) but a hand-held can never be as powerful as the console. If that were true, the PSP would BE our next-gen console. I'm wondering though, what nintendo is go ing to do to combat this. They won't admit (publicly) that they are last place in the X-Box, PS, GC, colsole race/war/whatever, even though they clearly are. But they do hold massive sway over the handheld market... Will the invasion of the PSP ruin nintendo? I'm hope they're going to rethink their posistion in the console area to make up for what will be lost with the introduction of the PSP... They will still hold majority over that market for a long time (handheld) but they've gotta make up for the inevitable decrease somehow. That said, nintendo's worst ploy ever was to get everyone "connectivitied" (read: making games any fun at all ONLY if you have a GBA to hook up to your GC). Hopefully Sony won't follow that irritating and (I hope) unprofitable plan of action with the PSP. Gotta love my musings.... |
or we could all say screw the psp and wait for the ps3, same thing with the NDS (nintendo DS) screw it. If the price tag on this thing hasn't changed to at least 100 I don't want to buy it, but the graphics are really good for a handheld system.

The price'll drop with time.
I mean, the PS2 was $750 in Australia when it first came out, then as soon as christmas passed it went down to the $300-400 mark. But then, the PS2 was a much larger console than what the Sony PSP seems to be. (In size, of course. The popularity of this handheld will most likely rise very quickly, and the console seems like it'll be more than some stupid craze [gameboy advance {original}, need I say more?] ) Actually, what is the estimated price for this little wonder? Does anyone know? |
I dunno, due to the humongous size of the current generation of consoles as compared to the last few, I predict that within the next 10 years, consoles will be a hojillion times more powerful, take up an entire warehouse, and be so exorbitantly expensive that only the 5 richest kings of Europe will be able to afford them! (2 with X-Warehouses, 2 with PlayWarehouses, and 1 with the slightly inferior but less expensive GameWarehouse). What with consoles taking up such a tiny portion of the gaming market in 10 years time, I see the handheld market exploding, so Nintendo's sales shouldn't be hurting too much even with the competition.

Actually, I think nintendo jumped ahead of X-Box because of the price drop around christmas.
Anyway, so the PSP is supposed to have PS2 graphics and be portable? Read discs all while not skipping? Make pasta in only a half hour? Cut through a leather shoe? This is all fine and dandy, and I'll admit incredibly cool, but what is all this going to do to the most important part of the handheld console: The battery life. I wouldn't think you could just keep adding features without killing a battery in half an hour. You remember the Game Gear, and the Virtual Boy, which both used about six batterys to power for about an hour? Sure, they were incredibly powerful, but you couldn't play for long, and that was a huge problem. And sure, those graphics look good all magnified, but how much detail are you going to notice on the handheld's tiny screen? Sure, it'll be there, but you'll need a microscope to see it. Just my thoughts. |
