Earthquake shakes up the midwest

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...05&sec=apworld

So a 5.2-5.4 earthquake hit southern Illinois (like, right on the tip of Illinois and Indiana) and could be felt as far as Fort Wayne (which is 6 hours away)

So did any of you Midwesterners feel it this morning? (like, at 5-ish) I didn't (I was sleeping). Although I was watching the news about it, and they were having people call in and talk about if they felt it or not, and some woman called in from the exact same town where I am currently, and she talked about how her drawers fell open and some stuff fell off of shelves or something. Which I thought was strange, because I've got a very unstable paper cut out sitting on top of my desk (near the edge) and it's still standing exactly the same as it was last night. Although that might be because I live in the 3rd floor of a college dorm, so that might have had something to do with it.

The earthquake was felt all the way north to Milwaukee, and people in Chicago were freaking out. Surprisingly enough, I managed to sleep through it. There doesn't seem to be any damage reported up here so far, but it's still early and people are still checking things out.

Living right there in Southern Illinois, I felt it. Woke me up. It had felt like someone had gotten under my bed and was shaking the hell out of it.

What is with all the earthquakes lately?!? There have also been quite a few (like, 60) reported off the Oregon coast in the past two or three weeks. No tsunami warnings, luckily. But why all the earthquakes??

!!!

OH NO!! THE UNDERGROUND DEMONS ARE BEGINNING THEIR ATTACK ON US!!

Sir Pinkleton 04-19-2008 11:51 AM

It may be unrelated, but in here in Hillsboro Oregon we had the power off for a little while in the morning.

Mike McC 04-19-2008 05:39 PM

Yes, that would be totally unrelated.

Now, fortunately, this quake probably isn't going to be a foreshock for a quake like the one from back in 1812, because this quake wasn't from the New Madrid Seismic Zone, it was from the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone.

FUN FACT! Since the quake woke me up, I had no idea what was going on. I decided it was ghosts.
FUN FACT! There was an aftershock around 10:15, 10:30 that scored a 4.6.

Lady Cygnet 04-21-2008 07:36 AM

Oops, it did it again. Today's aftershock was a 4.5.

While I can appreciate your desire to get up early, Fencer, why can't you use an alarm clock like everyone else? :p

Umm, since I never took any earth sciences, is the midwest even on a Fault Line?

If I'm not mistaken, no it does not. It strikes me a little odd, but thats my opinion. Though, I live in Ohio, and I didn't feel anything. (Does that even count as the Midwest?)

Though, you could always Google it.

Yes it is. It would be the New Madrid fault line.

Quote:

THE NEW MADRID FAULT SYSTEM EXTENDS 120 MILES SOUTHWARD from the area of Charleston, Missouri, and Cairo, Illinois, through New Madrid and Caruthersville, following Interstate 55 to Blytheville and on down to Marked Tree, Arkansas. It crosses five state lines and cuts across the Mississippi River in three places and the Ohio River in two places.
...
THE HIGHEST EARTHQUAKE RISK in the UNITED STATES outside the West Coast is along the New Madrid Fault. Damaging tremors are not as frequent as in California, but when they occur, the destruction covers over more than 20 times the area because of underlying geology.

Also, apparently this earthquake could either mean there won't be any for awhile, or it will start a chain reaction of several other earthquakes in the area within the next few months.

Stress relief or hair trigger?

One scenario predicts that some stress is relieved on the local faults where this earthquake occurred and will cool things down for a few decades. The other scenario is not so happy.

"There is the possibility, and we can only see over next few months what will happen, that the redistribution of stress on neighboring faults might trigger further earthquakes, and we can only guess as to whether they'll be equally large as today's earthquake," Forte said.

Aftershocks from the Friday quake will continue for several weeks, maybe months, he said. Already, there have been many, of magnitudes in the range of 2 and 3, radiating outward from the epicenter.

Hopefully it's the former, and not the latter. ^^;
