Hillary Pulls a Lincoln-Douglas on Obama

Clinton challenges Obama to debate without moderator

Saturday, April 26, 2008 3:23:45 PM

Hillary Rodham Clinton takes the debate dispute to a new level, challenging her opponent Barack Obama to face off with her in a debate without a moderator, Lincoln-Douglas style.

The Democratic presidential candidate said while campaigning in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday the 90-minute debate would allow two candidates to ask each other questions.

Her campaign formally made the offer in a letter to the Obama campaign.

Clinton has been putting increasing pressure on Obama to debate her again before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries in nine days.
Didnt thought this to be serious enought for Discussion.

Exactly what is Hillary trying to pull off here? Was she watching some The West Wing re-runs and this idea popped up? The news dows pop up here and there, and as far as i know Hillary is a little behind (but not on the major states) mostly because she cant hold the heat of a debate. Obama always comes out better... why would another Debate with no moderator be any better for her?! Is she trying to show that shehas "guts" ?

She'd just fillibuster him, and attack him on non political points. I don't see Obama falling for it, and frankly its well past time for him to ignore her & not bother debating her.

The math just doesn't work for her, and she's hell bent on taking down the Democrats, just to score a win. Regardless of how minimal her chances would be after that kind of win.

SWB

Considering Obama's by far the better orator of the two, perhaps she seeks to make him question himself about debating her- "What does she have up her sleeve to do this?" If she does or doesn't and he accepts, he's cautious and playing defense unless he knows her plan, and defense is considered bad for your image. However, if he doesn't, then she can proclaim he's not strong enough of a candidate to do what's necessary/defend his views/etc.

I think it's mostly a bluff. It's likely her camp thinks maybe Obama will think the same thing as SWB and decline the offer because he's afraid she'll pull stupid shit. Then he says no and Hillary can say, "See? I challenged him to an unmoderated debate and he chickened out!"

If he accepts, then it's quite likely she'll do what SWB suggested, but I'd still like to see an open debate like this where the candidates actually address each other rather than answer pre-scripted questions given by someone without either person being able to do so much as look at their opponent.

It might be an utter bullshit spectacle in the end, but the idea of at least trying the idea makes me feel a little warm and fuzzy inside.

I'd kind of like to see Obama accept and then blow her away by bringing up like, actually substantive shit like the imploding economy and the massive suck-hole of human lives and money that is the unending Iraq Debacle and our bankrupt state governments and a hundred other things that actually affect people's actual lives instead of stupid-ass trivia or DC-engineered freakoutery over "BITTERGATE" because hoshits Obama pointed out that being poor sucks!

Never gonna happen though.

Fifthfiend for moderator.
On that note. I quite agree that if that were to happen it would be something I might wake up to watch, but from what I've seen so far, those debates are crap.

If Fifth moderated it he'd be all "Naw, you both suck, let's get a real candidate in here."

But yeah, this is just a basic political stunt on behalf of Hilary. Puts her into a win-win situation at least on a theoretical level, but it's not like it's going to cause an overwhelming flood of votes in her favor just because Obama doesn't want to be in her dog-and-pony show.

Obama could win by challenging Hillary to a debate with Stephen Colbert as moderator. Because then he'd be awesome, and probably get a bonus Colbert Bump.

Shit, get John Stewart in there for that matter.

Just someone with some political brains and a matching set of balls.

That's actually a good idea, you may have said that in joke, but after re-watching this I feel he has the intelligence to do something good about it.
I also think Steven Colbert would do a decent job, but only if he broke character for it.
