Intarwebs Filters
So I recently moved in with my Aunt and Uncle and one of the rules they set was that I had to let them put an interwebs filter on my computer. I was fine with it, and had no intentions of trying to find backdoors around the thing, but this thing is really starting to piss me off. You wanna go to youtube? Too bad. Wanna go to a torrent site? Too bad. Wanna do any of the things you used to do before I was here? Too... Damn... Bad...
If it just blocked porn or whatever, I wouldn't really give a damn, but most of the sites I went to for keeping in the know and laughing out loud and all that jazz are now blocked. Anyway, so the point of all this is do any of you know workarounds around this program? |
You've just doomed any work arounds you might get in here by mentioning the program by name. I would suggest losing that mighty quick.
|
How in the fuck is anyone supposed to come up with a workaround for a program they don't know? Maybe I'm forgetting something but I can't think of a reason not to mention the name in here. Clarify please.
That said I probably wouldn't post one anyway because this is no one's fault but your own. Did you even check with them what's going to be filtered? Your first course of action is talking to them about it. |
The main problem with naming the service on a site that has google and yahoo bots all over it is that the people who maintain the service (if its any good) will see the post you've made and possibly block NPF as well as any work arounds anyone might know.

Oho!
Now that makes a bit more sense. Thought you were referring to anything in our own rules. My apologies, but the main point of course still stands. |

Pardon me whilst I laugh over here, away from you, for a little while. OK. So, why install this in the first place? If they want to dictate what their network accesses, they should manage that at the network level. You should have free reign over your own machine. It sucks that you decided to cede control of your property (unless somehow the machine is theirs, which it doesn't indicate in your post); nice work on that one. As it is your machine, you should have admin rights. Turn the program off/kill it when you want to visit places and put it back up later. Or, you know, uninstall it completely. Since I have never decided to censor myself/my ability to view things, I don't know the exact specifics of any of these programs with regard to how well/deep they embed themselves into your operating system. You can also look into proxy servers for web browsing (basically bounces your target sites' information to and from your machine via an intermediary, a likely non-blocked IP/DNS). |
Non, I hate to say this, but you're how old now? I was under the assumption you were roughly 18, and if you are, you have every right to decide what's done with your own property.
Second, if you don't have an admin account on your own computer, you should probably bang your head on a wall. Then save all you want off the drive and reformat and MAKE yourself one. It's your computer. Third, now that it's certain you have administrative access, you can probably set specific sites to allow in the options of your program. Just allow YouTube, Veoh (good one to pick up if you haven't), your torrent sites, etc. |
A bit off topic, but why IS youtube always blocked on interblag filtering sites? I don't think youtube videos are even allowed to say fuck, are they? And obviously they don't allow nudity or anything, so...?

I think YouTube is always blocked due to the large amount of bandwidth it uses to stream the videos. That's why it's blocked at my school.
